She held him as he slowly recovered, still buried inside of her, little tremors running through him like aftershocks. I love you, came the whisper in her mind, and she couldn’t tell if it was her or him or both. And it did not matter, for it was shared regardless.

He just had strength enough to roll them on their sides before he passed out, his breathing slowing and easing and growing deep. She nestled in his arms with his spent member against her belly, feeling the sweat cool on her body while her whole being glowed with warm contentment. The last thing she thought before dropping into sleep herself was, If this is what loving an alien psychic is like...I’ll definitely take it.

He still slept when she woke, lying half-curled around her still, his expression relaxed, his face almost boyish in sleep. She smiled and kissed him softly before slipping out of his arms to go shower. She could feel him still, in the back of her head, dreaming not of terrible things as before, but of hope, for a future he had never thought he would have with anyone.

But we both know he’s been wrong before. I’m just glad he got his head around that finally.

She finished in the bathroom, changed into a fresh pair of sweats and an untorn tank top, and went into his kitchen to rummage around. He had flour in his cupboard, he had eggs, he had butter, baking soda and maple syrup. She was in business.

A few minutes later the smell of breakfast woke him in the other room, and she felt him open an eye. Pancakes! was his first thought, and she started giggling in spite of herself.

Well, I do remember you asking.

She flipped the latest one and it let out a loud sizzle. And yes, I’m making a lot.

Telepathy certainly made mornings easier. Though she didn’t know what would happen their first early mornings. Telepathy before coffee didn’t quite sound as much fun.

Eventually he came out, shirtless and drowsy, hair still damp from the shower, and hugged her from behind, kissing the mark he had left on her neck. The tentative seed of hope she’d planted in him last night had bloomed, and with it a contentment he would have so recently considered dangerous. But now, he seemed to welcome it.

She didn’t know if they could have children. She had no idea what she would tell her parents, or he would tell his coworkers. She had no idea if there would be weird side effects to being a psychically awakened human. But those were all concerns they could face when they came up, together.

Right now, they had each other, and that was all that really mattered.

  Chapter 1

Sylvia read over the paperwork outlining her mission parameters. When she joined the privately owned spy agency, she imagined a life of adventure and travel. Although that was true, going to another planet entirely had never entered her mind.

Tryfes was a world like Earth, but the atmosphere had slight differences in the chemical make-up which made the sky red instead of blue while the sun was up. The people were aggressive, but friendly, and controlled some valuable mineral deposits on the planet.

The agency believed that if they could gain control of those minerals first, it would give them an advantage against any government in the world and could make them all rich.

Of course, if Sylvia refused, she would not only lose her job, but they also threatened her with jail time on some bogus charges. Really, she didn’t have much of a choice, but truth be told she was more excited than anything.

No other agent was ordered into space – just her!

Her first solo mission. She had tried to tell them she wasn’t qualified, but they were quite insistent.

It took weeks of training, but it had all sped by too quickly. Before she knew it, she was waking up on the day of the launch. The ship would auto-pilot to the planet while she was put into cryo-stasis.

Despite advances in technology propulsion systems, it would still take years to reach the planet. The cry-stasis would keep her body frozen in its current state, preventing her from aging.

The events of launch day went too quickly. One moment they were doing a final health check to make sure she checked out, then suddenly they were finishing the systems check. Hours of work all seemed to pass in a blink.

Sylvia looked around, trying to process the fact that this was actually happening as they hooked up the last diodes to her torso and head.

She sat on the edge of the cryo-tank, her feet in the surprisingly lukewarm water. Somehow she’d expected it to be cold.

“It’s not the water that will freeze you. We have synthesized hyper-sugars that will flash freeze. The water will freeze so fast that the moisture in your cells won’t have a chance to produce ice-crystals. This prevents the freezing process from actually damaging your cells, which makes the reanimation process possible.”

Everything the scientist said blew right over her head. All she could think of was that she was going to be dipped into the tank and frozen.

The world she was born on, that she grew up on, it would be gone. Everyone she knew would be millions of miles away.

The true horror of it began to strike her, and instead of excitement, she began to panic. When they started loading her into the tank, the monitor nearby began beeping a furious beat.

“I can’t do this,” she said.

Spinning her arms, she tried to fight them off. Instead of letting her go, however, they rushed her and forced her into the tank.

  “No, let me go!”

The lukewarm water splashed as she kicked, but they held her down. Worried about drowning, she fought just to keep her face above water. Some droplets landed on her lips, and she could taste the sweetness in it.

“Sedate her,” one of them shouted.

“No, if that’s in her system when she freezes, it could put her into a permanent coma.”

  A permanent coma?

This was supposed to just be a diplomatic mission.

Why were they forcing her to do this?

She tried to grab onto the sides of the tank and lift herself out, but someone pushed her hands free as another one push
ed her head under the water.

When she tried to come up for air, her face hit the plexiglass. There was no air!

Sylvia beat her hands against the case, now terrified she was going to drown. Then, just as the thought crossed her mind, there was a split second of intense cold before everything went black.

  Chapter 2

In her frozen state, Sylvia had no concept of what happened outside of her tank. For her, everything happened in a single blink of an eye, when in reality years had passed.

In one instant she was fighting the scientists and crew, afraid she was about to drown, and the next she floated on her back in the tank as if waking up from a dream.

The plexiglass case was open, and the stale air inside the cabin was surprisingly cool against her face. All of her joints felt stiff and ached when she tried to move.

The muscles of her stomach quivered as she took slow, shallow breaths. Her brain was still trapped in the moment of her fighting and tried to send panic signals to the rest of her body, but she was too out of it to respond.

A slight anxious feeling in her stomach was all she felt, her arms and legs like lead weights attached to her body.

As she slowly came to, her mind returning to some form of cognitive ability, she looked around and realized the state of things. The systems inside the ship’s cabin were sparking, some of them aflame with tiny fires as if they had been stolen from a candlewick.

Something stung her on the back of her hand. Muscle impulses made her want to pull her hand away, but she couldn’t actually move it. A cold, wet sensation traveled up her arm.

Inside she knew she should’ve been concerned, but she couldn’t bring herself to care. Every inch of her was trapped in near paralyzing lethargy.

The cold sensation traveled to the tips of her fingers and up her arm. Mentally she tracked as it moved throughout her body.

When it hit her heart, there was a slight delay before it burst throughout her chest. The cold stinging surged through her legs and down her other arm. A wave of it traveled up her neck and washed over her head in a great chilly wave.

In that moment, she reflexively took a large, deep breath. Strength returned to her limbs with every passing second.

Sylvia closed her eyes, enjoying the return of her body when suddenly the cabin door cracked and groaned as though it was being ripped from its hinges.

  Wasn’t she in space?

Suddenly, the door exploded into the cabin and a deep red light filled the room.

Sylvia shot up straight and jumped out of the tank. Her wet foot slipped on the flooring as she tried to get to the weapons cache embedded in the bulkhead, but four men rushed inside.

Each of them was bare-chested and muscular. Long hair flowed about their heads, each a different shade of black or blue. One of them grabbed her by the arm and pulled her away from her guns. He had a grip like a python!

Sylvia tried to pry his hand free, but surprisingly one of the other men growled and punched the one holding her.

In response, he grabbed the attacker by the face and pushed him back, sending him across the cabin and into the consoles. The already damaged electronics exploded in sparks.

Another one of the men grabbed her by the other arm, trying to pull her free of the first one’s grasp, but he was kicked in the groin by the fourth.

The one holding her tried to pull her to his muscled chest, but the fourth punched him in the face, twisted his arm, and pulled her free.

With a cry of victory, he dashed out of the cabin and into the open air of the alien planet.

Sylvia’s face was awash in the red light. The air went from the stale recycled oxygen of the cabin to the chemical smell of the new atmosphere.

At first it stung her nostrils and lungs, as though she had walked into a kitchen freshly mopped with cleaning solutions. After a few breaths however, she grew used to it and the sting faded.

The man held her off of her feet as he ran, looking behind him. When she turned to see where he was looking, she saw at least twenty other men all chasing them!

Each was more beautiful than the last. These were aliens?

She couldn’t believe what she was seeing.

Great mountainous crags filled the horizon, some of them looking as though they pierced the sky with their jagged peaks. The one that held her ran like the wind, and those chasing were slowly losing ground.

When he looked back and saw this as well, he laughed and looked at her. Sylvia was a virgin, but she knew lust when she saw it.

“No,” she whimpered and tried to push herself free of his arms, but he was too strong.

The alien man’s eyes went wide in shock as he looked ahead and skidded to a stop. When Sylvia looked she saw another alien man, this one the most exquisite she’d ever seen, was slowly rising from a crouch, a cloud of dust around his feet.

Had he jumped down from that tall boulder? It was at least twenty feet high!

Yet there he stood, imposing and powerful looking as though he didn’t even notice.

“Mine!” the one holding her shouted, his hold on her tightening.

The one standing in front locked eyes, his voice deep yet quiet.

  “Mine.”

The one holding Sylvia stood tall and took a deep breath to push out his chest. When the large one in front of them stepped forward, the one holding her put her down and stepped forward as well. Sylvia was in too great of shock to have even thought to run.

The men collided into one another, exchanging furious blows. The sounds of their fists connecting with flesh and bone made her cringe. Finally, the large one threw a punch that knocked out the other.

It was when he stepped toward her that she realized she should’ve used the chance to escape.

By then, it was too late. He grabbed her by the wrist.

  “Mine.”

  “No,” she said firmly.

  “I don’t belong to anyone!”

  “You do now.”

  Chapter 3

Sylvia was taken against her will to the large alien city. Stone buildings were constructed from the sides of the tall rocks and outcroppings. Tunnels were carved into the mountains, and large chambers cleared out as meeting spaces.

The large one took her to his home, yet along the way, she never saw a single woman. On the street, in the buildings, everywhere her eyes fell she found one handsome, muscled man after another.

“Where are the, I mean to say, don’t you have any females?”

  “No,” he said simply.

Sylvia twisted her mouth in annoyance. He didn’t even bother looking at her when he spoke.

“How do you make, are you all…?”

  “All what?”

“How do you reproduce?” she finally blurted.

“Not the way you do.” The answer was not nearly as informative as she had hoped for, yet it raised some interesting questions.

“If you don’t reproduce with females, why are you fighting over me? What do you want with me?”

One of the men on the street suddenly veered towards them, but the large one holding her shot his hand forward, grabbed the man by the neck, and slammed him back against the stone wall.

Sylvia cried out in surprise, but the man’s eyes rolled back as he slowly slumped to the ground.

“Did you--?” The rest of the sentence was cut off as the large man tugged her onward. She tried to look over her shoulder, hoping to see the man move. He never did.

“What’s happening?” she asked as they turned the corner, her view of the possibly dead man disappearing behind the wall.

“Your people did not tell you?”

“I thought they had, but now I’m beginning to think it was all a lie.”

The man opened a door, shoved her inside, and followed in after. Closing it behind him, he slammed a large metal bar into place.

The stone chamber was a house of sorts. There were woven rugs along the ground in rich greens and blues which interacted with the red light to give
off a violet shine.

There were surprisingly intricate carved arches in the walls to allow someone to see from one room to the next. Swirling designs followed along every frame and border.

“Is this your home?” she asked.

“Yes. I am Geruke. I’ve claimed you as my own.”

“Now you stop that,” she said, spinning to face him.

  “I don’t belong to anyone.”

“Yes, you do. Me. They will try to take you, but I will stop them. I am the fastest, and the strongest. I deserve to be Lord.”

  “Lord? Lord of what?”

He stepped toward her with a slow, purposeful motion.

“The prophecy tells of a time when a virgin female will arrive from the sky. It says that anyone who mates with her in the ancient ways will be granted power over all. He will become a giant in battle that can never be defeated.”

“Oh,” she said as she looked around, “that’s really interest—wait, what?”

He stepped closer to her, his chest tensing with every heavy breath.

“You can’t be serious. Mate? No, no, no, I’ve never, I mean, I don’t even know you. I don’t even like you.”

“No man on this planet will be able to resist his urge to be with you. The promise of power is too great. But they cannot have you.”

Her back touched the wall and he slammed a fist against the wall near her head. As smooth as an ocean wave, his face came within inches of her own.

  “You are mine.”

“No I’m not,” she whispered, her voice too small to impress even her.

“If you leave here, the others will attack. They will fight. I will have to kill them to retrieve you.”
