You readers are the best people in the world - a thousand thanks!

How would you feel if you were gifted to wield nature’s greatest power?

Ever since Haylie found out she was a Natural—the rarest human species in existence—she was determined to find out about the ability she should have.

The problem—she had no clue how to find it.

What made things worse was that Dylan, the man who'd dared her to come anywhere near him, was now her trainer and eager to push her to her limits. When he made her jump over that wall, it resurrected something inside her she deathly feared. She knew she needed to find out about her ability soon and get it under control before someone got killed.

Dylan was still avoiding Haylie as best as he could, but when they came up with a plan on how to find any information about her ability, he jumped at the chance to go with her. In the end, no one could have guessed what kind of power lay dormant inside of her. He was just grateful they still had enough time left before her Awakening.

Little did he know that time was quickly running out...

“Test, test.” Jimmy’s voice grated in my ears through the earpiece, causing me to wince.

“Drop it down a notch, Jimmy. I can hear you loud and clear,” I mumbled, lowering the volume.

A few weeks ago, we decided to have a look at Bryceland’s files from her time in the hospital four years ago in hopes of finding any information about her ability. Until now, we weren’t any wiser about what power she had.

We crossed the tunnel to the northern exit of the compound with me leading the way in front of Bryceland, Phil, and Josh. Josh babbled on about how excited he was to go on his next mission, as he’d been knocked out cold on his last one before the action had even started.

Bryceland was still downcast after nearly killing David by causing a neon lamp to crash down and apologized to Jimmy over and over. I didn’t fully understand her empathy. Sure, she had caused a horrible accident, and she should have reigned in her emotions, but the asshole had forced himself upon her, and still, she felt as if she was the one to blame.

She hadn’t said a word since we’d set out, her eyes wary all the time and careful to maintain a certain distance between us, as if afraid I’d plunge a knife into her back any second. I couldn’t say I blamed her. She didn’t know how to handle the situation. Were we allies or enemies? Hell, I didn’t know the answer. Whenever I looked into her eyes, even covered by gray lenses dulling their true color, I saw Ricky, Jenna, and the sister I never met, but knew had just as glowing, jaylior orbs. I saw all the losses haunting me every night, fueling my anger every day like a raging fire that continued to spread, which made it harder to be close to the Natural I made it my mission to protect.

Jimmy had made sure Scott gave her a crash course in basic defense moves before we set out. After that, we’d gone through the plan to break into the archive of St. Alice’ Hospital countless times. I’d called Danielle, one of the nurses there, to check on her working hours. I felt bad using her for this, mostly because I’d likely ruin any chance of meeting her again should our mission not work out as planned. That was a pity because Danielle had a knack for using her tongue, if you know what I mean.

When we neared the exit, I retrieved a black piece of fabric. Bryceland stopped beside me and turned around reluctantly. She was careful in my presence. Being blindfolded meant for her to trust me, and she’d said not long ago she didn’t.

Only she didn’t have any other choice right now.

Sliding the blindfold over her eyes, I tied the ends behind her head, careful to wrap it around her hair clip. I placed my hand on her back and guided her forward to the ladder. She fumbled at the first rung before climbing blindly. I tried not to latch my eyes onto her perfect peach-formed butt when I followed her, but it was hard looking anywhere else when covered with those damn tight jeans, wiggling from side to side only inches in front of me.

A van waited for us outside. While Josh helped Bryceland into the car, I put the manhole cover over the hole we exited and climbed into the backseat.

After Phil steered the car around a few corners, I allowed her to remove the blindfold. None of us feared she would betray us, but if Dorian got his hands on her, he’d torture her until she revealed the compound’s location. It was better she was left in the dark—for now, anyway.

We drove into the parking lot of St. Alice’ Hospital and parked the car far away from the main entrance but close enough to keep an eye on things.

“Do you have a good view from here?” I turned to our Watcher, Phil.

“Yes, this is perfect. I’ll let you know when I notice anything unusual,” Phil answered.

  “Good. Jimmy?”

“Everything’s clear,” our compound leader replied through my earpiece.

“Alright. Bryceland, call me in fifteen minutes. I’ll meet you in the changing room. Do you remember the way?”

“Third floor, then two rights, and then the fourth door on the right side,” she repeated the directions I’d given her.

I knew the changing room for the medical staff well. Danielle and I had met there a couple of times, killing time doing inappropriate t
hings.

  “Right. Okay, Josh, let’s go.”

I waited until Bryceland set her timer, which would go off in fifteen minutes before Josh and I stepped out of the car. As soon as we entered the hospital, we separated. Josh would check out the changing room on the third floor as well as the archive on the fifth floor, so he knew exactly where to tune in later with his Catcher ears. Josh turned to the left to make his way to the elevators, while I went straight ahead to meet with Danielle in one of the rooms where the hospital stashed empty cots and other medical equipment.

After turning off the microphone of my earpiece so no one could catch what was about to happen, I made sure the hallway was clear and disappeared behind the door. Danielle was already waiting for me, propped on one of the cots. She threw me a flirtatious smile when she saw me enter.

She was pretty, although too unnatural for my taste. Her hair was dyed black and consisted mostly of extensions, and her lips were swollen from regular silicone injections. The top buttons of her blouse were already open, giving me a glimpse of the white, lacy bra covering her D-cup breasts, which were just as fake.

Locking the door behind me, I strode over to the cot without saying a word and leaned down to kiss Danielle. She moaned as soon as my lips touched hers, angling her body closer to mine. Her heavy perfume tickled my nose and felt bitter on my tongue when I tasted her skin.

I leaned forward, pressing Danielle into the mattress and came down on top of her. She immediately spread her legs to allow room for my hips.

“Wha… what took you so long?” Danielle drawled in between her moans while I trailed kisses along her neck.

“Hush, don’t talk,” I silenced her, putting my forefinger into her mouth, which she sucked with great pleasure.

Moving my free hand under her blouse, I fiercely grabbed one of her breasts. Danielle arched, pushing her body against mine and clutching my biceps, her long fingernails digging into my skin.

My hand trailed down further. I thrust my groin forward to distract her before inconspicuously snatching the keys from her coat pocket. She gasped in surprise as my hard bulge ground into her, oblivious to what I was doing aside from doing her. I hadn’t given the others any details about how I intended to get the keys from Danielle, but I assumed they could guess.

As soon as the keys rested firmly in my hand, I let them vanish in my back pocket. I sucked on Danielle’s neck to get another loud moan from her to drown out the jingling sound of the keys.

  Mission accomplished.

Trailing more kisses along her collarbone, I yanked the fabric of her bra roughly to the side, revealing her breast. As soon as her hard nipple came into view, my mouth closed over it, sucking hard. Danielle was squirming under me and fisted her hands in my hair.

A few minutes later, the ringing of my phone echoed loudly through the darkness, and Danielle moaned, only this time in displeasure.

“Don’t answer that,” she muttered against my skin, sounding tortured.

“Sorry, could be important,” I apologized and sat up to fish out my phone. Of course, I knew who was calling.

“Yes?” I answered and heard Bryceland’s agitated voice from the other end of the line.

“Dylan, we have a problem. I… I can’t talk about it on the phone, but I need you here immediately. Can you come?”

Her acting skills were acceptable. Danielle would easily be fooled if she heard her upset voice, and given the disappointed look on her face, it worked as planned.

“Sure, I’ll be there in a few.” I ended the call. “Sorry, babe. We’ll have to continue another time.”

  “But—”

I kissed her again and thrust my tongue into her mouth to silence her. “Sorry, but it sounded like an emergency. I have to go.”

And with that, I got up and left a horny Danielle behind, turning on my microphone as soon as I was out the door.

“You got it?” Jimmy asked when I was online again.

  “Of course,” I mumbled back.

Making my way back to the elevators, I fumbled with my jeans where they covered my groin. I hoped my arousal died down before Bryceland got a glimpse of it.

I finally arrived on the third floor, thankfully without any visible bulge left in my pants. Bryceland was already waiting for me. When I passed her, she got smoothly in line beside me, neither of us feeling the need to talk. The hallways were busy with doctors, nurses, and visitors scurrying around. We needed to be careful not to attract attention.

“Josh, do you hear anyone in the changing room?” I asked through my earpiece, turning to face the wall so that the communication went unnoticed.

“Wait a sec…” Josh replied. “Yeah, I hear something. Sounds like two or three people are currently in there, probably nurses. They’re talking about getting one of their patients ready for surgery. I guess they’ll leave soon.”

  “Okay.”

Bryceland didn’t say anything while leaning back against the wall, warily eyeing her surroundings. I checked my watch. Whoever was in the changing room would hopefully leave soon before I accidentally bumped into Danielle.

“The strawberry odor suits you. Very manly,” Bryceland commented sarcastically with a wrinkled nose. Apparently, Danielle’s cheap perfume still clung to me.

“If that’s all it takes for getting—”

“I think they’re leaving,” came Josh’s voice through the earpiece.

A second later, the door to the changing room opened, and two nurses exited in fresh, baby blue uniforms, chatting idly about what they were going to cook for dinner.

  “Let’s go.”

I checked the hallway again. The medical staff was busy, so no one would notice us. I opened the door for Bryceland to get in and quickly trailed in behind her.

Bryceland went over to the closets and rummaged through them. The first one consisted of cleaning supplies, the second one contained the blue outfits for the nurses, and the third the white coats for the doctors. I grabbed one, but Bryceland threw me a strange look.

“I doubt you’ll fit in it,” she mused with her nose scrunched.

I checked the size. Nope, small was the wrong choice. Bryceland sighed, and after a bit of rummaging, she tossed me another white coat, hitting me in my face.

After we dressed, I made my way to the door.

“Wait. We need to blend in.” Bryceland stopped me, handing me a stethoscope from a table in the corner, which I put around my neck. She also grabbed a clipboard and shoved a pen in the front pocket of her uniform.

My gaze quickly roamed over her figure. Yeah, she could pass as a nurse. A sudden image flashed in front of my vision, one of the dirty kind consisting of Bryceland in a tiny white skirt and a tight blouse with a red cross sewn on it and—

“Ready?” she asked, interrupting my ill-timed thought.

With a short nod, I opened the door for her, and we left the changing room, pretending to be regular members of the medical staff. I hoped we could maintain our cover.

A group of three nurses passed us, and Bryceland greeted them with a friendly smile. They acknowledged her back. At least she knew how to blend in.

When we got into the elevator for a ride to the fifth floor, there was absolute silence. The tension in the air was practically tangible. A sideways glance at her told me she felt uncomfortable, shifting from one foot to the other and rolling her lower lip through her teeth. I noticed her nervously tugging at her bracelets.

“Are you okay?” I felt the urge to ask.

“Yeah, I just hate hospitals. Especially this one,” she admitted, her voice tight. I nodded in understanding but kept quiet, not knowing what else to say. As far as I knew, the last time Bryceland had been here was four years ago after her sister had been brutally murdered. I guessed that hadn’t left happy memories.

After a few long seconds of awkward elevator riding, a soft ping announced our arrival on the fifth floor.

“Josh, give me an update,” I mumbled when no one was looking.<
br />
“There’s no one in the office. You’re free to go in.”

“We have the green light,” I informed her.

When we reached the door labeled ‘Archive—Staff Only,’ I retrieved the set of keys. After testing a few, the fourth key fit in the hole. We slid in quickly, and I locked the door again behind us.

A big, rectangular room greeted us, wide shelving stashing all kinds of files climbing up the walls and filling every square of the archive. I hoped it wouldn’t take too long to find what we were looking for.

“Over there,” Bryceland whispered and strode to the other end of the room. ‘Patient Files’ was one of the labels on the shelf.

  “I’ll check the database.”

I walked over to a computer sitting on a desktop. After a few attempts, I managed to hack the system while Bryceland went through the printed files. Finally gaining access to the patient database, I typed in her name, along with the year she checked into this hospital.

No entry. How could that be?

I typed in the doctor’s name, but aside from some other patients with the same surname, no entry appeared.

“There’s nothing in the database. That’s really strange.”

“I can’t find anything, either. Maybe the files are locked in Dr. Simmons’ office,” Bryceland mused.

“Do you know where his office is?”

“Yeah, a few doors down the hall. We could have a look, but what if he’s currently in there?”

“Only one way to find out.”

We left the archive, strolling down the hall until we came to a door labeled ‘Peter Simmons, Ph.D.’

“Josh, do you know if there is anyone in Dr. Simmons’ office?” I whispered.

“No. At least, I can’t hear anything.”

“Alright, we have to give it a try.”

Turning the knob on the door, it silently clicked open, and I let out a sigh of relief. It was pure luck the door was unlocked. I doubted Danielle’s keys would have worked. The room was dark, but it would be too risky to turn on the lights in here.

  “Same again?” Bryceland asked.
