The Third Eye Page 10

by B R Coelho

“Selena!”, I hear Nana’s voice in my head. I almost sit bolt upright, but the pain in my leg stops me. Daisy waves at me as she leaves the room. I smile back.

“Nana! You’re alive.”, I almost cry with joy.

“Thanks to you, my little chiquitita.”, Nana says, her voice is much stronger and livelier than before.

“I’m out of my coma, thanks to you.”, Nana continues. “How are you doing? Your parents were worried sick.”

“I’m doing fine Nana, but I broke my leg.”, I say wincing at the thought of it.

“I felt a change, and the prison that was holding me begin to weaken last night. I could sense you were in pain, chiquitita.”, Nana says compassionately.

“It’s okay now, Nana. I found out who your attacker was. It was my friend.”, I broke the news to her.

“Your own friend?”, Nana asks, her voice in shock.

“Yes. I don’t think we could’ve known. She was very careful and crafty.”, I respond, shivering on how we were all bamboozled into thinking that Brie was good.

“What happened to her?”, Nana asks, her voice is tinged with slight concern.

“She fell off a roof, Nana. I think she died. Maybe that’s why you’re free from the coma prison.”, I reply, visualising Brie’s catatonic face as she tripped off the roof.

“She said something about working for Xibalba.”, I say to her. Silence. Deep uncomfortable silence greets me and stays there for a while.

“Xibalba?”, Nana asks, her voice sounds like it got caught in her throat.

  “Yes.”, I reply hesitantly.

“If he is involved in this, then this is much bigger than I thought.”, Nana continues.

“There is a prophecy that has been passed down, Selena. A prophecy of the end times. And Xibalba is the trigger of it.”, Nana says.

“The prophecy says, that in the end of days. Xibalba will attempt to take over the souls of man, using indigo children. He will come, offering them great and terrifying power, but in the end he will use them to enslave mankind.”

“I think it has something to do with the eye.”

“Nana, the eye, Alaghom Naom, she told me…”, I begin to say.

“That it’s just an amplifier. Yes, I know. The true eye, Selena, is the third eye. It is within you.”

  “You knew…?”

“Yes…it was prophesied that the chosen one would have the third eye opened completely. You have the potential to use your powers for great, or terrible things.”

“But why me? I didn’t ask for this damn power. Or this…this…destiny.”, I almost scream.

“We have to fulfill our destiny, Selena. Every one of us is tasked with a destiny. Mine is to guide you in the ways of the mind. Yours is to prevent Xibalba and his minions from taking over the world. That is why Alaghom Naom gave her power to our ancestor all those millenia ago.”, Nana says trying to reassure me.

“But, I can’t do it…I can’t do it all alone.”, I say, my thought-voice on the brink of crying.

“You’re not alone, Selena. I will always be with you, no matter what. You got that?”, Nana reassures me again.

“I know Nana, I know.”, I say wiping the tears from my eyes.

“Selena!”, Lauren exclaims as she rushes forward to hug me.

“Ow! Ow! Watch the leg, it still hurts”, I say to Lauren. My Dad is pushing me on a wheelchair. Cathy is rushing toward me too, disregarding my pleas. Dad chuckles. Mom is still overprotective.

“Come on girls, be gentle.”, Mom says. I have so many questions to ask them. Whatever happened to Brie? I can almost still hear that sickening thud. And where’s the eye? As if reading my mind, Cathy silently opens her palm to reveal the gleaming ebon marble. She quickly shoves it in my hand.

“Thanks.”, I whisper, as she nods knowingly. She kept it safe for me all this time. It’s been two weeks since the incident.

“What’s that? That thing in your hand. What is it?”, Dad asks, he saw it. Darn.

“It…it’s our friendship stone.”, I lie, “Must have gotten lost in the accident that night.”

“What happened to Brie?”, I blurt out, more out of curiosity, rather than changing the subject. As much as I reviled her, I didn’t want her dead. She still deserved a chance.

“Oh! Poor girl.”, Mom begins, almost tut-tutting. Dad grunts in an almost audible sigh. I look in Cathy and Lauren’s direction. No-one seems to want to spill the beans.

“Doctors said she’s catatonic.”, Dad finally says. “The fall must have caused some sort of aneurysm. She’s been in the ICU in Albuquerque for a while now. Don’t know when she’ll get better. At least that’s what I heard on the grapevine.”

“God, what were you girls thinking that night? You both could have died. I mean climbing roofs to put out a fire is great…”, Mom starts with the information overload. Fire? Putting out a fire on the roof? Is that the best excuse they could come up with?

I turn to look at Cathy and Lauren. Lauren gives me a little wink and a smile.

“…surprised the parents didn’t sue…”, Mom keeps going on and on. I’m just glad that we were able to fight off evil. Even for one night. I know that this isn’t the last we would hear of Xibalba and his minions. I squeeze the marble in my fist and feel it warm up. I know then and there, that I’ll be ready for him. No matter what it takes, for the sake of my family, friends, and the world. I’ll be ready.
