Xal had already managed to attract fangirls.
She waited until they had taken a few more photos before taking pity on Xal. She swooped in to rescue him as the schoolgirls started asking him questions.
“So, are you guys, like, taking over Earth?” They stared at Xal with undisguised fascination, as if he were an exotic bird.
“Why does everyone keep asking me that?” Xal said mildly. “Of course we aren’t.”
“Do you have a girlfriend?” They were becoming bolder now. Sera ambushed them from behind.
“That’s enough, kids,” she snapped, waving them away. “Stop pestering the poor Kordolian.”
“Sera.” Xal shot her the most brilliant smile, looking slightly relieved. She melted inside all over again. Sera reached his side and he greeted her with a kiss. The schoolgirls seemed slightly disappointed.
That’s right girls, Sera thought smugly, he’s all mine.
She was feeling jealous and possessive because of some teenaged schoolgirls. Oh, this was getting out of hand.
Sera placed a reassuring hand on Xal’s arm. “Those photos will be circulating across the Networks in, oh, give it about half an hour. It’ll be excellent PR, so don’t worry. Never underestimate the power of a teenage selfie.”
“Let’s get out of here,” Xal murmured, and although she couldn’t see his eyes behind the dark glasses, she knew what he was thinking, because she was thinking exactly the same thing.
“Agreed.” Sera took his hand into hers. “Remind me to teach you a few things about social media, fangirls and public relations.”
“The perils of life on Earth?”
“You bet. Some things never change, and this is a centuries-old phenomenon. Prepare yourself for an onslaught of the curious and the obsessed. The majority, I suspect, will be female.”
“I’m not worried in the least,” Xal grinned, “because I have you, my fierce Queen, to scare them off.”
“You’re such a dork,” Sera said affectionately as they walked down the imposing steps of Federation Hill, looking out at the impossibly blue expanse of the ocean below. The sight of the water gave Sera an idea, and she regarded Xal with a sly sidelong glance. “Now that we’re back, I can’t wait to go skinny-dipping with you in the ocean.”
“Skinny-dipping?” The corner of Xal’s mouth quirked upwards in amusement. “That sounds like something interesting.”
“You don’t even know what skinny dipping is, do you?”
“No, but I’m willing to find out,” Xal rumbled, and even though he was wearing sunglasses, she could feel the heat in his stare.
“I think you’ll be pleasantly surprised.”
“I look forward to the surprise, then. You and this incredible planet of yours will never cease to amaze me.”
The sun shone down on them as they left the Senate Chambers, leaving the leaders of the world to debate over Earth’s future. They were a striking sight; a Human and a Kordolian walking side-by-side in the bright morning light. Around them, people stopped to stare, but instead of being bothered by it, all Xal did was wrap a possessive arm around Sera’s waist.
Sera smiled. It was going to be another gorgeous day on Nova Terra.
