Mitch hit stop and set the camera down. Rage overtook him, and he pulled Paul and the chair to the edge of the boat. "You sick fuck. You crazy, sick bastard."
"No, don't. Please, please, no, don't. I'll do anything."
CHAPTER FORTY FOUR
Chapter Forty-Four
Mitch and S. held hands and walked up to the cafe where the terrible murders began. It had been two months to the day since Mitch had returned with Paul, still tied to his chair, and turned him over to Agent Chavez.
With both cases solved, Chavez had agreed to take over the director's job, providing he be allowed to take some time off. This was that time. He sat with Alex, Antonio, Jamal, and Granville. They stood when Mitch and S. arrived.
Alex said, "You made it."
"We went to his parents' place this morning," S. said.
"How were they?"
Mitch smiled and said, "They were still mourning the loss of their son but seemed pleased we stopped in to see them."
Alex asked, "So, what was in that note you found from Mitch? You never did say."
S. smiled. "Something wonderful and frightening and perfect. Maybe I'll show you later."
Mitch ordered two coffees and held out the chair for S. They sat and talked with their friends about the coming trial, life, and appreciating every day. The early afternoon sun was warm. For a while, nobody felt the need to say anything.
They all planned to spend the week together. Antonio had arranged for a special celebration in their honor. Alex, beaming with joy, said, "Chavez isn't the only one who has gotten a nice little promotion."
Antonio blushed.
"Antonio got the news just yesterday."
Antonio said, "All the credit goes to you, Alex, and of course our friends at the FBI."
Chavez said, "It is Mitch who figured it out and tied everything up with a nice bow on it."
Mitch smiled. "I got lucky."
Chavez said, "I think it was more than that. In fact, having watched you pace and work through the little evidence we shared with you, it was truly amazing."
Alex said, "It really was." She gave a wink to Chavez.
Mitch said, "I guess fear is good for my reasoning skills."
Chavez smiled and said, "I think it is just natural ability, which brings me to a question I have for you."
"A question?"
"Well, more than that really," he said and pulled out a manila folder. "It seems there is a little problem with the assistant to the ambassador from Egypt. I was wondering if you might take a look."
Alex said, "It is really quite a puzzle. I've read it twice."
"I thought we were here to relax."
Chavez laughed. "Okay, I guess we are, but promise me you'll give it a read before we head back to D.C."
Mitch looked at S. who squeezed his arm and said, "I'll make sure he does."
Jamal raised his coffee cup and said, "Here's to solving crimes..."
S. said, "And beautiful views..."
"And super computers..." Granville said.
Alex said, "And places that serve something stronger than coffee."
They all said, "Cheers."
Mitch took a sip and smiled.
The End...
