One afternoon while Sam was at the store the doorbell rang, scaring the shit out of me. No one had ever come to our house before. From the living room window I couldn’t see the front porch, and I almost decided to ignore it. Then I remembered that Joselin was coming in today. I thought she’d said it be late afternoon, but I guess she was early. I rushed to the door and just before unlocking it looked out the peep hole, almost screaming in shock. It wasn’t Joselin. It was Chris.

How the fuck had he found us? Oh God! What was I going to do? I quietly backpedaled to the bedroom where I’d left the new cellphone Sam had bought me. Shit! What was his number? I missed his old phone number that was so easy to remember.

Another double ring of the doorbell then a loud knock. I sank down in the corner of the room between the bed and the dresser and had to really concentrate before I finally remembered the correct sequence of numbers. I hit send. It rang once, twice, then a third time. Please Sam, please answer!

  “Hey baby,” he finally answered.

“Sam, come home now,” I barely whispered, afraid he’d hear me on the porch. There was another pounding on the door.

“Kate? What’s wrong? I’m on my way.”

  “He’s here. He found us.”

“That motherfucker!” he screamed, so loud Chris could probably hear him out on the porch.

I screamed before I could catch myself when I heard the sound of glass shattering.

“Kate, what happened? Don’t hang up!”

“He broke the window,” I whimpered.

“Goddamn him! I shouldn’t have left you. How the fuck did he find us?”

I heard Sam’s car door slam and then the car engine come on.

“Kate? I know you’re here!” came from the living room.

  “Sam, he’s in the house!”

“Shhh, just hide and I’ll be there as soon as I can.”

I could hear Chris’s steps coming down the hardwood floors and then he was standing in the bedroom looking down at me. He looked mostly the same, a little crazier maybe, and his face was still messed up from Sam’s beating that had happened weeks ago. What scared me most was the gun sticking out of the front of his jeans.

“Kate! There you are! Why didn’t you answer the door?”

Sam was yelling through the phone, but I had no idea what he was saying.

“Oh, is Sam on the phone? Let me say hello.” He reached down and jerked the phone from my hand.

“Hey, jackass. Nice place you’ve got here. Oh and Kate’s looking fine as ever.”

Sam’s voice blared through the phone, unintelligible to me as my heart raced and I started shaking.

Chris laughed. “We’ll be long gone before you get back. But I don’t know if I can wait that long to get in her again. Might have to fuck her in your bed before we leave, maybe even wait until you get home so you can watch. Yeah, fuck you too. Here, I’ll let Kate tell you,” he said, surprising me when he handed me the phone back. Then he pulled out his gun and pointed it right at me.

  Oh shit!

“So Kate, tell Sam you can’t wait to fuck me again,” he ordered. Sam was screaming at me through the phone.

“Say it!” he ordered as he put the gun closer to my face.

“I can’t wait to fuck him,” I finally said.

  “Say my name, tell him.”

“I can’t wait to fuck Chris,” I said as the tears started falling.

“Ok, give me the phone back now,” he said, as he grabbed it from me.

“Got that Sam? Have a nice life thinking about me and Kate together,” and he hung up on him.

“So Kate, how’ve you been? What? You think I’m going to hurt you?”

“I, I don’t know,” I stuttered, especially since he was pointing a gun at me.

“I wouldn’t really hurt my baby’s mama,” he said with an evil smile. How the hell did he know?

  “How, how’d you know?”

He laughed. “So you are knocked up! Damn, and Sam’s still with you? I figured he’d hit the road when he found out. Unless you haven’t told him? I should have told him on the phone.”

  “He knows,” I answered.

“That’s fucking surprising,” he said. “Well, we better get out of here before he gets back. Don’t worry though, I’m going to take care of you.”

  “What do you mean?”

“I mean get your ass up and let’s go. Or do you want me to go ahead and start fucking you in this bed? We can spend our time doing that while I wait for Sam to come home. Then I can unload this clip into him. He may be a vampire, but he’s not bulletproof. I owe him some pain and payback.”

Oh God! I couldn’t move, but I wasn’t going to just sit here and let Sam walk into an ambush because I was too scared. I grabbed onto the bed comforter and pulled myself to my feet.

“Oh good, you’re ready to go.”

I’d go with him for now, but I would find a way to shoot him with his own damn gun or run. I was pretty sure he wouldn’t hurt me with it, but not completely certain with his apparent mental instability.

“Hurry it up, I bet he’ll be back any minute.”

I walked out the front door with him and his gun out behind me, down toward the black two door car sitting in our driveway.

  “Get in and let’s go.”

I opened the passenger door and got in, feeling sick as I looked up at the house we were leaving. Sam would be so furious and hurt, but I didn’t know what else to do.

Chris cranked the car and then we were pulling out of the neighborhood. We only passed a few cars on the way but I looked at them to make sure it wasn’t Sam. I even felt a bit of relief as we hit the highway. He was safe, at least.

“How did, how did you find us?” I asked him. I was still shaking, and my tears started falling again.

He laughed. “This,” he said pulling out of his pocket and holding up a small glass cylinder filled with some sort of green liquid. “One of the perks of being back to normal, thanks to you.”

  “A spell?”

“Yep. I went by your apartment after you and your dad left and grabbed what I needed.”

He’d seen my dad there? How long had he been watching me? Was he there when Sam had been, those last few days?

“Bet you didn’t know witches were always fertile did you? Good thing you kept your virginity for so long or you probably would’ve gotten knocked up sooner.”

Shit! That’s why he was so sure I was pregnant?

  “But the condom?” I asked.

“Oh yeah, I came so damn hard in you before I went and got it, and it felt so fucking good. Then I used the condom for round two. I wanted to knock you up,” he said. Son of a bitch.

“But don’t worry, I’m going to take care of you and my bastard. Shit, it’ll be the first bastard born to a witch and a warlock in probably hundreds of years,” he said as his right hand reached over and grabbed my thigh, squeezing it.

Oh fuck! Of all the damn days why did I have to wear a dress today? As I predicted his hand started traveling up under the hem further and further until he was between my legs, rubbing me through my panties as the car swerved. I could try and knock his hand away, but what good would it do to fight him? I knew it was a losing battle with him having a gun and a hundred pound weight advantage on me. I could try and wreck the car, then run. Or wait until he was distracted and pull his gun on him. Even though it was his fucking baby I didn’t want to do something that would hurt it.

“Oh you feel so fucking good, spread your legs wider baby,” he said.

“Please don’t,” I asked hoping he’d be decent. Nope, that was too much to ask of him.

“Fuck it! I can’t wait any longer,” he said and then he pulled off the road into an abandoned gas station.

As we slowed down I reached for the door handle and opened it as quickly as I could, but I wasn’t fast enough.

“Hell no, don’t think about it,” he said as he grabbed my arm jerking me back into the seat. “You r
un and I’ll just go back to your house and look for Sam.”

Dammit! What was I going to do? I felt so sick I was probably going to throw up on him if he touched me again.

Chris dove over the console and started smothering me, pinning me to the seat with his body. There wasn’t enough room for him in the small confined space as he put his mouth on mine and jerked my dress up. He was crushing me and I couldn’t breathe with his weight on top of me.

I reached for the gun from the front of his pants but he grabbed it first, then threw it in the backseat.

“If you’re not going to play nice, then fine, I won’t either.”

I started crying as one of his hand groped me while the other undid his pants and his knees dug into my thighs. I felt so fucking helpless as I tried to push him away and he didn’t even budge an inch. What was wrong with him?

“Why are you doing this?” I asked as I sobbed.

“Because I know you want me,” he said, and then there was a deafening sound as his head exploded in front of me.

I started screaming and trying to push him away, but he was too heavy to move. I was panicking because I couldn’t see anything through the thick dark stickiness covering my entire face and I couldn’t breathe. It was in my eyes and my mouth. Oh God and the smell! I started heaving then suddenly his weight was gone.

I looked up and imagined seeing what sort of looked like my dad, only younger. His hair wasn’t white, it was dark. I blinked and wiped my eyes as I looked at the hallucination, but he didn’t disappear.

Then I looked down at my hands that were covered black with a disgusting thickness.

“Oh Kate, are you alright? I’m sorry sweetie.” It was my father’s voice, and then he was hugging me as I shook and sobbed.

“Daddy? Is it really you?” I asked through the sobs.

“It’s me. You’re okay now. But Kate, we’ve got to move him before someone comes along. Do you know Sam’s number?”

I nodded but couldn’t get my mouth to say the numbers. I held out my shaking hand asking for his phone, which he handed to me. Maybe I could dial the numbers if I could get my fingers to hold still. The black blood on my hands was now smeared all over the phone, but I finally got the numbers entered and hit send.

“Who the fuck is this?” Sam yelled through the phone, because of the unknown number.

  “Sam. Sam it’s me.”

“Kate! Where are you? Are you okay? If that bastard touched you I will kill him!” he screamed.

  “It-it’s, it’s already done,” I stuttered as I shivered.

“What? Kate, where are you? Please tell me how to find you!”

  “His head’s g-g-gone.”

  “His head’s gone? Chris’s head?”

My dad held his hand out for the phone. I’d let him explain it and tell him where we were.

“Sam? Yeah it’s Tom. I’ve been tracking him. He had a gun so I had to wait and catch him off guard. Kate’s okay, just a little shook up. Yeah, I blew the son of a bitch’s head off. Unfortunately, he was on top of Kate at the time. No, she’s fine. Sam, she’s fine! He didn’t hurt her. You’re okay, right sweetie?”

  I nodded.

“See, she’s fine. Now get your ass over here and take care of her so I can clean up the mess. Highway twelve north, about ten miles outside of the city, abandoned gas station on the right. I’ll leave the phone with Kate but I’ve got to get rid of this mess now. Okay. Thanks.”

“Here, talk to Sam. He’s on his way. Can you sit over here and wait for him so I can move the car?”

I nodded but I couldn’t stand up. My dad picked me up and sat me over in the tall grass as I still gripped the phone in my hand. I heard Sam’s voice screaming through it.

  “Kate? Kate!”

“I’m here,” I finally managed to say.

“I’m on my way, I’ll be there in just another minute.”

If Sam said anything else I don’t remember. I watched as my dad hefted Chris’s body into the passenger seat of the black car and shut the door, then he said something to me as he walked around, got into the driver’s seat and drove off.

I broke down again when I looked up and Sam was standing in front of me. He picked me up and held me to him as he carried me to the car.

“Oh God Kate, I was so worried about you! What a fucking mess, no wonder you’re freaking out. Come on, I’ll get you home and clean. Are you really okay?”

I nodded against his chest and then grabbed onto his shirt as he tried to sit me down in the car.

  “No! No, don’t leave me!”

“I’m not leaving baby. I’m right here.”

  Chapter Forty-Three

  Sam

I was glad that fucker was dead, but his death had been too quick and easy. Kate was traumatized and understandably so. Black blood covered her face and hair, all over the front of her dress and even down her legs. I was almost relieved when she passed out, although I was still worried about her going into shock. But it wasn’t like I could just take her to the hospital to get her checked out.

I carried her into the house and held her while I filled up the bathtub, then removed her stained clothes before setting her in the warm water and washing every single drop of his blood off of her.

When I was sure it was all gone I dressed her in some warm clothes and wrapped her up in bed under the covers. Gathering up all the bloody clothes and rags, including mine after I showered, I took the pile outside to the backyard and started a bon fire.

I wanted nothing more than to hold Kate and make sure she was alright, but I had to get shit cleaned up in case someone saw something that might lead them back here. The car was mostly clean since I’d held Kate while I drove her home, but there were a few spots to clean. There was also the glass to clean up in the living room where he’d busted out the damn window.

Finally, after I’d washed everything in the car and house, and the fire was dying down I went and climbed in bed curling up to Kate. She was still out but her breathing and pulse sounded normal and she wasn’t shaking anymore. I was still holding her a few hours later when I heard a knock at the door, making me jump and fly out of bed. Before I got down the hall I heard her father’s voice through the door.

  “Kate? Sam? It’s just me.”

I undid the lock and opened the door for him. “You scared the shit out of me!” I told him as my lungs started working again from the panic I’d worked myself into.

“Sorry,” he said looking apologetic as he came into the living room and I locked the door back. “How’s Kate?”

“She’s still out of it. She passed out when I picked her up and has been out since. I got her cleaned up and put her in the bed, but I don’t know what else to do,” I told him.

“She’ll be okay as soon as the shock wears off.”

I nodded, hoping he was right. “Thank you for being there today. I don’t know what I would have done. I would have never found her.” Damn it hurt so much to think about how close I’d been to losing her again.

“You were right. He wasn’t going to give up trying to find her. I saw him when he pulled over at the D.R.A. truck right after the two of you left that Friday night. I went after him and have been following him ever since. He finally caught up with you yesterday, and was just waiting for you to leave her by herself. I’m sorry I didn’t kill the asshole sooner, but he had a gun and was paranoid enough not to ever be alone. I had to wait until I could catch him off guard.”

“How the hell did he find us?”

Her dad shrugged. “Spell, using something of Kate’s he probably stole from her apartment most likely. I think he’d been following her and was there the day I was.”

I couldn’t help but smile now that I knew the bastard was dead. “So you blew his head off, huh? I’m jealous.”

  Her dad chuckled.

Then I sobered up as I thought about the future. Her dad needed to know, even though Kate probably wouldn’t want to tell him.

  “She’s p
regnant.”

“Ah goddammit!” he yelled, his face turned blood red and he looked like an angry bull as he stomped around.

“It’s his?” he asked lowering his voice.

“Yep,” I told him as I sat down on the couch and he continued to pace around the living room.

“And I assume she’s keeping it?” he asked, knowing her well enough that the decision was a given.

“Of course. Now you know why I wish I would have been the one to remove his head.”

“Kate’s even younger than her mother was when we had her,” he said sadly, shaking his head. “Elizabeth got pregnant right after we were together, and never got to finish school, now Kate won’t either.”

“How do they get pregnant without having cycles?” I asked.

“They’re always fertile. I should’ve told Kate so she’d have been more careful.”

“She was careful. He wasn’t.” I said clenching my jaw.

“Why am I not surprised?” he gritted out. “So you’re staying with her? You plan on marrying her?” he asked, surprising me.

“Yeah, of course. I mean, if that’s what she wants. I love her more than anything, and I’m over what she did with him. Fuck, he basically took advantage of her. I don’t deserve her.”

“You’re right, but you have my blessing, even though she probably doesn’t need it or want it.”

My mouth dropped open, and I wasn’t sure I’d heard him right. The man was ready to kill me a few weeks ago.

“What? I know you care about her and she could do a lot worse. You’ll keep her safe. And the baby. That fucking asshole,” he mumbled as he rubbed his face.

“Can witches be turned?” I asked him, figuring he might know from his line of work.

“Don’t you think her mother would still be alive if they could?”

“Oh fuck. What about a spell? For longer life, no aging or something?” I asked desperate.

“I don’t know of any such thing, but I’ll spend the rest of my days looking for one.” He reached down his shirt and removed the silver necklace he had on under it, handing it to me. I looked down at my palm trying to figure out what he’d given me.
