“Father, you okay?” The priest nodded while holding his hand to the wound on his neck. Gregory felt his hair being gripped. His body was pulled into a standing position. Serge was behind him, and for the first time, he saw Mei standing in the dark, except the dark was being pushed back by the fiery glow that surrounded her. She took slow methodical steps towards him. He coughed and gagged as she got into his face. Gregory flashed back to the night a few weeks ago, and he could feel that this time she was not going to hesitate.
“Serge, we can work something out,” Gregory croaked. “I know things. I can help you.”
“Don’t talk to him,” Mei said. “I’m the only one you need to pay attention to. I want my face to be the last one that you see before you are no more.”
Mei’s hands reached out to either side of his face. Gregory could feel the heat from her. It burned just like the Summoner blood that was in the bloodstream of the priest. How long had they been feeding him the witch blood in preparation for Gregory to find him? Why hadn’t he brought help? Why had he come alone?
“You won’t win,” he gasped to her.
“Oh, yes. I will.” Mei closed her hands around his head. Serge let go and backed up. The vampire that was Gregory disintegrated into thin air. And in a split second, Mei’s glow went away. The darkness swallowed them again. Mei stood there looking at her hands.
“Mei,” Serge said cautiously. “Are you okay?”
“No,” Mei said softly. Serge helped up Father Moore.
“What’s wrong?”
Mei looked up at her mentor and protector, her friend. She said three simple words.
“I liked that.”
