“He can talk his way into anywhere,” Trimas said, and soon he and Zedek were stood looking out of the city. “How did it go?”

“Perfectly. Her first strike.” There was pride in Daeholf’s voice … but something else too.

“Spoken to her yet?” Trimas asked.

  “No. She’s been busy.”

“Aye. Busy. Organising a new unit.”

  “Yeah.”

“But you will talk to her.”

  “Yes.”

  “Soon.”

“When she’s ready. We are allowed to stay in Bastion for as long as we want, so we will. If that’s alright with you two.” Daeholf looked at his friends, and they nodded.

“Bastion is a nice place. I’m happy to pause here for a while.”

Daeholf went to smile, but stopped. Something barely audible was teasing his ears, something most other people would ignore. But he knew, he had waited desperately for it once.

He heard the sound of distant marching.

All three turned, and looked out over the wall. Soon reflections could be seen, and over the next hour a marching legion revealed itself.

“Well,” Trimas said, sighing, “that complicates things.”
