She looked at Sophie. “You did so good being quiet. Are you ready to talk to your little brother?”
Sophie nodded and bounced so hard on Will’s lap that he almost dropped her, but he completely agreed with her sentiment.
“Let me remind you... Children have different reactions the first time they hear a voice. Don’t worry if he cries. This is huge for Nathan.”
Blake nodded. “Okay.” He held Nathan tight, bending over to kiss his head.
Will’s eyes focused on him for a moment, and he saw in Blake the same excitement, the same elation.
“Here we go.” Dr. Michaels said, then gestured that the microphones were activated.
Will leaned forward. “Hey beautiful,” he said, his voice quavering slightly.
Nathan just kept playing with his feet, and Will looked across at Dr. Michaels, perplexed. Is it working? Sophie shook Nathan’s toy in front of him, and the beads rattled loudly. Nathan’s eyes widened and he lunged, chubby hands grabbing it.
Sophie burst into an excited peal of laughter. “He heard it!”
Nathan looked at his sister, his eyes still wide, and promptly burst into tears. Will blinked, his throat tight. He had never been happier to hear Nathan cry. Beside him, Blake made a croaking sound, and Will reached for his hand. They took a moment to soothe Nathan with some backrubs. When he quieted down, Will looked at Dr. Michaels.
“Try again,” she said softly, picking up the toy that had fallen to the floor and handing it to Blake.
Will found himself holding his breath.
* * * * * *
Blake took the toy from her and shook it. This time their little boy let out an explosion of giggles.
“Oh God,” Blake said.
Nathan turned his head in the direction of the words, his eyes large and round.
Blake couldn’t contain his emotion a moment longer. He bent over until he could see Nathan’s face. “Hey, Nathan.”
Nathan giggled and patted Blake’s mouth. It was more than Blake could stand. Tears rolled down his cheeks, and when he looked across at Will, he was in a similar state.
Sophie slid off Will’s knee and knelt down again in front of her brother. “Nathan!” she shouted.
Nathan shuddered as though an electric shock had coursed through him, and then burst into tears.
Will wiped his eyes. “Maybe that was a little too loud,” he suggested.
Sophie flushed. “Sorry.” She took Nathan’s hand in hers. “Nathan? I’m Sophie.” Her voice was softer.
Nathan focused on her and smiled, reaching for her face.
Will cupped Nathan’s face. “Hey, beautiful boy. We love you.”
Nathan stared at him and then laughed, a joyous, natural sound.
Sophie stared at him and then brushed the palms of her hands together twice.
Blake knew sign language when he saw it. “What does that mean, sweetheart?”
Sophie regarded him with wet eyes. “It means happy, Papa.”
Blake couldn’t think of a more appropriate sign.

About the Author
K.C. Wells started writing in 2012, although the idea of writing a novel had been in her head since she was a child. But after reading that first gay romance in 2009, she was hooked.
She now writes full time, and the line of men in her head, clamouring to tell their story, is getting longer and longer. If the frequent visits by plot bunnies are anything to go by, that’s not about to change anytime soon.
