Kyle grinned and sat up. “Gimme!”
He grabbed the paper, already expecting what was inside. As he unrolled it, he revealed a map of the island with an “X” between two palm trees on the beach. “Can we go now, or do we have to wait ‘til tomorrow?”
Dan grinned and leaned in, brushing his nose against Kyle’s. “I think we should do it before those dumb pirates notice that someone snatched their map,” he said and crawled out of the tent.
It was already dark when he unhooked the boat from the yacht and started rowing.
“So exciting.” Kyle grinned and pulled down one side of the makeshift tent to see the beach better. “Have I mentioned you’re the best?”
“What?” I didn’t hear you,” said Dan with a smile in his voice as they approached the dark shape of the island.
“You’re the best.” Kyle kissed the top of Dan’s head, trying to work out where the treasure could be.
“Look if there’s a gas lamp somewhere,” said Dan, quickening his movements.
Kyle turned back to rummage through the pillows until he found what resembled an old gas lamp but was really powered by batteries. He turned it on, and the lamp gave the whole scene a green glow. His gaze followed a small stingray passing by their boat in the now-darkened water.
“I wonder what Blackbeard hid in the chest,” said Dan, looking back several times as they neared the shore.
“You mean Captain Dick?” Kyle laughed and looked to the island. “I bet he came up with those nicknames, didn’t he?”
“Yeah, he threw a fit that we have to use them, or he wouldn’t let us use the yacht. Selfish prick. I love him,” said Dan, getting up and jumping into the shallow water.
He urged Kyle to follow his example and pulled the boat onto the pristine sandy beach. Kyle laughed and nodded, but his mind was already set on finding the treasure. This weekend was already the best thing under the sun, but he was greedy for yet more pleasures and surprises. He located two massive palm trees, uncaring that he was naked. He felt free and imagined the island was uninhabited. Worst-case scenario, he’d run back to the boat.
Dan put the lamp in the sand and crouched next to Kyle by a dried-up starfish that lay on the ground in the place that seemed to mark the spot the creator of the map put the “X” on. “Go on, dig.”
Kyle cheered with glee and bent over to dig in the soft sand with his hands. The green light made the island magical, as if they’d arrived in another dimension. He didn’t have to dig that deep to begin uncovering a treasure chest the size of his two hands.
“Wow, that was unexpected,” said Dan, playing with the sand at his feet.
“You know I love surprises.”
Kyle didn’t stop digging until he uncovered the chest. He blew sand off the top of it and sat his naked ass back before opening the lid with his heart beating faster. In the dim light, he saw a stack of fake coins, which smelled like chocolate, but as he dove his fingers between the pieces, he took hold of a wooden piece the size of an egg. It had a line around it that made Kyle realize it was a round box. He pushed it open and stilled with his heart in his throat at the sight of a dark, matted signet with a little diamond glistening in the light. It was firmly placed in a slit in a black pillow, and Kyle looked back at Dan, unsure if it meant what he thought it did.
Dan’s Adam’s apple bobbed as he leaned forward, taking the box out of Kyle’s hand. “You might want to stand up for this one,” he said with a laugh that betrayed how nervous he was.
Kyle stood up, rubbing his forehead. “Oh, my God. I shouldn’t be naked for this, should I?”
Dan smirked and pulled on Kyle’s hand until he could kiss it. “It doesn’t matter. Kyle, I—” Dan took a deep breath and glanced at Kyle in the ghastly green light. “You changed so much about my life. I had this idea that I’d settle down after I’m thirty or something, but you came into my life in your cute preppy clothes, and nothing has ever been the same.” He cleared his throat and blinked several times. “I love you so much. I want you to stay with me forever, and I want everyone to know. Will you marry me, baby?”
Kyle nodded, too choked up for words when Dan slipped the signet on his finger with a smile. “Yes,” he whispered when he managed to find his voice. “I will. I want to be yours forever.”
Dan swallowed hard and pushed on the top of the lamp, switching it off. He jumped to his feet and took Kyle in his arms, breathing in the scent of his hair. “Love you so much. You make all of my dreams come true.”
Kyle hugged him tight, happier than ever before. For a moment, they only had the moon and stars for light, but when the sky burst with color and an onslaught of fireworks, he understood why Dan had turned the light off. The guys were in on all this and only waiting for Dan’s signal. Kyle shook his head and leaned in for another kiss from Dan.
“Aren’t you gonna get me a collar?” He snorted, watching the colorful lights dance on Dan’s face.
He laughed when the handsome face twisted into a scowl. “Come on, you know I hate that shit.”
“I know, I know. Just teasing.” Kyle smiled and smooched Dan again. “I love you.”
This time, Dan didn’t answer and just entwined their fingers as they both faced the yacht, where they could vaguely see the moving shapes of their friends, celebrating the big day with them.
There would never be anyone more perfect for Kyle than Dan, even if the story of their engagement would have to be altered for their parents’ sake.

About the author
K. A. Merikan is the pen name for Kat and Agnes Merikan, a team of writers, who are taken for sisters with surprising regularity. Kat’s the mean sergeant and survival specialist of the duo, never hesitating to kick Agnes’s ass when she’s slacking off. Her memory works like an easy-access catalogue, which allows her to keep up with both book details and social media. Also works as the emergency GPS. Agnes is the Merikan nitpicker, usually found busy with formatting and research. Her attention tends to be scattered, and despite pushing thirty, she needs to apply makeup to buy alcohol. Self-proclaimed queen of the roads.
They love the weird and wonderful, stepping out of the box, and bending stereotypes both in life and books. When you pick up a Merikan book, there’s one thing you can be sure of – it will be full of surprises.
