She pulled out a drawer and started to rummage inside, pushing papers aside that looked innocuous, hoping to find something so obviously incriminating that she would have her leverage.

“What the fuck are you doing?”

Eve span round in fear. And then she steadied herself, feigning a confidence she didn’t feel, acting like she had every right to be where she was.

“Officer Goodheart,” she said, matter of fact.

“It’s Detective. And who the fuck are you?”

She reached for her hip pocket, and saw his hand snap to his holster, ready to react should anything dodgy go down. She admired the man’s reflexes, and she pulled out her badge and flashed it to him.

  “Eve Knight, IA.”

“Is walking into people’s house uninvited part of IA’s remit now?”

“Only if those people recently joined Conrad Duff’s strike team.”

She saw his shoulders slump, almost imperceptibly, but enough to notice. His chest was broad, and his biceps were obvious, even under his leather jacket. In any other circumstance, she would be flirting with him by now. His eyes twinkled with a slight menace that made her want him deep inside of her.

It didn’t bode well, and she fought hard to bury those thoughts and sensations, even as her clit made itself more insistent.

“How was your first day?” she asked in an effort to break the silence and put him more at ease.

“Fine,” he said, and swept off down the hall and into the kitchen.

When she entered behind him, he was already kick-starting the coffee maker.

  “Just fine?” she pushed.

“I got sucked off by a UI,” he blurted, and she felt a pang of resentment in her chest. “Do I gotta report that?”

At least she had some leverage now.

“I should write it up, yes.”

He fussed with his filter, then topped it up with some water, all the while saying nothing, his jaw clenched and firm. She sat down on a stool and watched him intently.

Eve found herself wondering what it would be like to slide her mouth down this man’s prick, what it would feel like gliding over her tongue, how deep he would push it, how hard he would fuck her face.

She gave a little cough, and squirmed against the wetness in her pussy.

“Tough spot to find yourself in after one day,” she said, a croak in her voice betraying her arousal.

“Didn’t even know I’d been tapped for the team. Today was audition day.”

He slammed the lid closed, clearly irritable.

  “You get the part?”

“Yup,” he said and turned round finally, leaning against the counter and looking at her.

  “See anything unusual?”

  “A UI’s tits.”

  “Who’s the UI?”

“Monita. A barmaid at a bar just off Maple.”

“Why’ve you got a UI there?”

  “Not my UI. Duff’s.”

“What’s so special about the bar?”

  Brandon shrugged.

“Heavy security. I guess it’s a mob joint.”

“You know Duff’s last three rookie’s all wound up copping a plea?”

Goodheart visibly baulked at the revelation.

“He uses them as shields to his own misdeeds.”

“IA are paranoid fucks,” he said, clearly not believing his own sentiment.

She knew she could push the point harder now.

“You wanna wind up behind bars like them?”

He made a face of derision, but she could see the fear in his gorgeous eyes.

“You know what they do to bent cops in the joint?”

“Lay it on a bit thicker why don’t ya?”

“Okay,” she leaned forward. “How about this? Conrad Duff is already setting you up as his next patsy.”

  “For what?”

“That’s what I intend to find out. But it’s gonna be some heavy shit.”

  “How heavy?”

  “Last time it was robbery-homicide.”

  “Shit.”

He shook his head and stared at his feet.

“Some first day huh?” she said softly.

“You’re just yanking my chain,” he said. “Painting the worse case scenario. IA’s had a hard on for Duff for years, and nothing has stuck.”

“Because he uses people like you.”

“How’s that any different than what you’re doing now?”

“My way keeps you out of the federal penitentiary.”

  He sniffed.

“So, what’s it to be Brandon? Time to pick a side.”
