Room For Three

“Each point represents one of us, me, Asher, and Peyton,” Charlie explains, and then turns toward me.

“Are you both going to be my dads now?” Elise asks. She looks so serious, and so hopeful.

Peyton and I look at each other when she says it. I would hate to answer for Peyton, but I do answer for myself. “I would love to be your dad, if you wouldn’t mind.”

“I can be your dad too, if you want,” Peyton replies, and gives her a warm smile.

“That’s awesome. For all my life I didn’t have a dad, and now I have two!” she exclaims excitedly, before she tears into her food.

Charlie glances nervously between me and Peyton.

I nod, reassuringly. She smiles at me, and then Peyton.

Whatever comes our way, whatever tries to come between us, I feel that we will face it not as three, but as one. Like the knot in Charlie’s necklace, we will be one heart, and the three of us will become one, for eternity. Forever.
