by Lori Wilde
Do you have a writing routine?
Oh yes. I write for a couple of hours in the morning, take a break for an hour or two, come back for another two-hour session, take another break, then come to the keyboard for a third two-hour session. I find it helps my creativity to break up the writing with spells of some mundane activity like cleaning house or exercise or running errands. I never watch television during the day, however. That makes me lazy.
When you’re not writing, what do you love to do?
I enjoy exercising, believe it or not. I used to be a marathon runner and there are a lot of similar characteristics between long-distance runners and novelists. There’s something about the discipline I find compelling.
What or who inspires you?
My husband inspires me because he’s kind, funny, romantic and heroic. I’m so blessed to have found him. My father inspired me to become a writer in the first place. He infected me with his love of books and reading.
Is there one book that you’ve read that changed your life somehow?
One of the most emotionally charged books I’ve ever read is A Prayer For Owen Meany by John Irving. It’s about the power of goodness. It made me understand that the external things we accomplish here are just that. It’s what kind of person we are that matters, not whether we gain fame and fortune.
What are your top five favorite books?
A PRAYER FOR OWEN MEANY
LONESOME DOVE
THE THORN BIRDS
GONE WITH THE WIND
TOM SAWYER
What matters most in life?
Forgiveness.
If you weren’t a writer what would you be doing?
It’s hard to imagine not being a writer because it’s all I ever wanted to do. But in a parallel universe I might be a chef. I’m a foodie and I love to cook. There’s something rich and nourishing and inspiring about preparing a delicious meal for those you love.
