  CHAPTER ONE

  ***********************************************

She was walking down a hallway; she was in a black Victorian era dress. It had half sleeves on a corset top and a bustle skirt. She was in the abandoned house Chelsea had been obsessing over but it was so alive. She was seeing it how it once was bursting with color. She could see through a window at the end of the hall the trees were alive. She turned and started down the stairs, she wasn’t in control of herself she was watching through the dream hers eyes. She went through another short hall and emerged in the kitchen. She turned a faucet on and that’s when she realized her hands were covered in blood. The sink became stained with it as she rinsed them off. She washed her hands and then placed a large bloody butcher knife in the sink. What the hell had she done? A door slammed shut and she heard his voice. “You’re even more beautiful like this.” She turned her head and grinned at him. “I was wondering where you went.” She opened her arms happily for him and he grinned and leaned in for a passionate kiss, he lifted her dress and shoved her onto the counter.

  ***********************************************

She woke up and groaned. This was what, the fifth dream this week? She welcomed them usually but Reyes had been a bit more proactive last night, she sighed heavily thinking of him. He was no longer in bed of course. They shouldn’t have even ended up together last night. Or the night that she slept with him or anyone for that matter four months ago. She had avoided him after that.

She left out of Silver Cross, Davenport to Vienne Mountain in Monksgrove, a huge weather adjustment. Davenport was hot, so hot it was a law that all dwellings had to have central air units. It never snowed it was consistently one season. It rained and it was either a simple light rain or pouring so hard you couldn’t drive in it. In evenings it got a nice breeze and early mornings it sometimes had a small chill but that was about it. Vienna had been freezing; she didn’t miss it that was for sure.

She rolled onto her stomach and yawned. The dreams were the only history she had of her past. Not her past of her short twenty year existence. The past of the hybrid she once was. She and her three sisters were synthetic DNA reincarnates. There DNA had been unpreserved in 2031 and carried by four surrogates for the six short months of being pregnancy. They were born the same day and a few hours apart. They had two years to go before they reached their eternal ages of twenty-two. From there they would look how they did then forever unless they were killed. Being bodies had sort of like a blood reservoir tank, if you had been feeding and the stronger the being you got blood from, if you took blood the quicker you would heal. The lesser you took from for example, she and her sisters drunk the bottled variety you wouldn’t heal as fast and you wouldn’t be as strong as you could potentially be. If your tank was empty you couldn’t heal. Beyond that the only beings she had even heard of being invincible on any level were Reyes and his brothers, based off their age, strength and abilities.

That was just one of the differences between the brothers and her and her sisters. They were full-blood vampires, she and her sisters were vampire-fae. They were the Straykova kings, they were the Salvadora queens and the very last of their bloodline, and they were supposedly special because they had more than one elemental ability whereas most beings only got one. Clover had water and electricity, Jenna was the only shifter in existence to shift to what she did and she was an earth elemental. Scarlett was fire and air and she, herself was queen over the whole legion because she could control all the elements but she was the last being alive and in a very long time to have Cimmerian, a dark power ability that wasn’t done manifesting. It was also an issue she was dealing with everyday.

The legion was split into factions beneath her like a pyramid system except none of the factions were higher than the other she just sat at the top. The factions were split based off ability. So if someone was water they were under Clover, if they were air they were under Scarlett and so on. The Straykova legion worked the same way but no one even knew what all the kings could do. They just had the same set up as them with Reyes at the top and their legion members divided evenly among the three kings below Reyes.

Reyes was an enigma, all the brothers were really but he was the one she had ever spent time alone with. He was dark, not the bad boy persona dark but the dark that you weren’t supposed to go near that terrified beings to the point of refusing to speak ill of him in public, or speak on what he did behind closed doors of his home if they knew. Also she and her sisters elder advisors and the two vampires who raised them William and David, ran the Salvadora legion like a pristine machine to the point she and her sisters weren’t required to do anything but answer emails, calls, attend meetings they were briefed on before hand and attend functions, oh and keep the alliance formed between the two legions peacefully intact. Clearly that wasn’t an issue. Reyes legion was required to be on cruise control with no room for speed bumps or error and the brothers were still very hands on themselves hence Reyes disappearing act.

She figured one of reasons Reyes meant something to her even after all he’d done was because he was her fusion partner and vice versa. It was supposed to be a rare phenomenon and a one in a billion chance of finding but he found her and his brothers found her sisters. The pull for her was magnetic she hated it at times hated it even more her partner was who he was at times even more. They hadn’t fused yet though thankfully. He hadn’t brought it up yet and part of her was a little bit hurt he didn’t but she figured she already knew why. Fusion was literally until death, like the tying of two souls. If they fused he would gain control of her legion as its recognized king and vice versa, beings could fuse without having found their partner and a lot did if they wanted beyond a regular marriage. Reyes and his brothers had been around a very, very long time and had yet to. Calling them playboys would be a nice way of putting it.

She climbed out of her bed and went into her attached bathroom and looked in the mirror, she looked amazing since taking Reyes blood again last night, not that she was bad before. She lived off of the bottled kind the MDA supplied or the Mythical Donor Association. The company that thoroughly screened the shifters, fae, warlocks, vampires and humans that signed up to donate. Yes, humans t
hat lived in the world as it was now in 2051, they had tried to rebel twice and then realized how stupid that was and now resolved to living with them harmoniously and trying to be with them or be their best friends which was fine with her.

She had smooth tanned olive skin now glowing from his blood, her hair hung a little past mid back; it was straight and had a natural shine to it, even shiner at the moment. Her hair was so black it almost had a purple under tint to it, her eyes were a violet-magenta color, very vibrant as well currently. She like her sisters stood at five-two had larger c-cup breast, a flat stomach, and a round killer toned butt.

She was supposed to be meeting her sisters at the Mythical Commerce Center in the library. They were trying to piece together their past, who killed them and why? They knew it was done in a brutal fashion but they had no recollection of any of it. The dreams were like flashbacks. She would be viewing things from the old hers eyes. The Reyes love interest was new and she wasn’t sure if this was her minds way of protecting her from who it really was or it really was Reyes. She would have to ask him about it. Reyes knew how she came about to be here. He was after all much older than her, she didn’t know if he went back that far though. He encouraged her to learn who he was and was supportive of it.

She brushed her teeth, showered and dressed in a white thin strapped bodysuit and a baby blue midi skirt. She paired it with strappy lace up white heels. She headed downstairs and her otherside companion, her black dire wolf, Shadow came to greet her. She scratched behind his ears. Shadow was unbelievably smart, she and her sisters had once had a theory he was a shifter stuck in a wolves body and so were their own companions.

A black vase filled with deep purple roses with black stems sat on her kitchen bar. She picked up the little red card and read it. –Good morning my little fae-R.

She smiled, this is how she could forget who he really was, and he did things like this all the time. He had to of left very early and came back to make sure these were here when she woke up. She text him thank you and got ready to leave for the day. She had just moved here a month ago, she and her sisters lived in a private cul de sac of just their four homes; it was a secluded area and quiet.

She walked into her garage bypassing her regular cars and deciding on her 1969 candy apple red Chevrolet Hellcat Camaro, her baby. She and William had found it at an auction and she just got it restored and performance upgrades done to make it a reliable street car. Reyes responded as she got in the car.

She grinned again at his text saying -anything for you. She drove out of her driveway and towards the downtown of Silver Cross to the MCC. It didn’t take her long to get there; when she did she parked beside Clovers white Aston Martin and got out. The sun glared down at her. She walked into the cool stone building and hit the button for an elevator. “Hey you.” She turned and grinned as Troy, a full-blood vampire she had known since Mythical Elementary approached. Troy was handsome, he was a few inches shorter than six feet, he had brown hair a little longer than a crew cut and pale blue eyes. He had an athletic build and tan skin.

They all swore Troy liked her as more than a friend but he had never made a move or said anything. She highly doubted that would work out though. Troy was very sweet and funny but she had never wanted an ordinary romance, she wanted a storm, where they could have endless conversations at three in the morning and sleepless nights, where one look would cause her to shiver but one touch could ignite a fire. She knew she could get all of that with Reyes minus the endless conversations, she just didn’t know if setting herself up for inevitable hurt was a wise decision.

She also didn’t know how she would feel if she found out Reyes and his brothers knew who they once were in an obvious personal way if the dreams she and her sisters had were any indication. Why wouldn’t one of them have said something?

“You ready to start digging?” He asked now stepping into the elevator with her. Troy was one of their actual friends, they had “friends” and then they had the friends they actually trusted. “I was born ready.” She joked. They rode the elevator up to the fourth floor and walked down the hall to the tall oak double doors that led into the library. Pushing open the doors she saw Clover typing away at her laptop, her sunflower blonde hair was down and pulled to one side of her head, her amethyst eyes glanced up at her and she smiled as she and Troy entered. She had on a white sundress that stood out against her natural tan skin that almost everyone in Davenport had.

“Find anything?” She asked her sister. “Just more info pointing to that house.” She sighed. It was pretty apparent they would be making a trip to the large abandoned house in the very near future. They had discovered that a company called Qertec had bought the house about thirty years ago but they hadn’t done anything with it. So they had to have some knowledge of the house. When they had tried to look the company up they hit a brick wall. No contact information, no CEO names or employee names listed and no address, just a brief synopsis that they were a company striving to do great things for the community.

She wasn’t sure how keeping an old abandoned house still standing in the middle of nowhere was doing anything for the community. They had some other basic information figured out; they lived in a village called Yosemite. The village was no longer standing; it had been wiped out and was now a shopping mall where it had once been, so that wasn’t much of a help. The otherside companions were old as dirt and clearly immortal like them as they had been with them back then as well.

She had found, or more like he found her and scared the hell out of her when she was out for an evening jog four years ago and he popped out of the tree line.

She looked over at the large white board that had everything they knew so far on it, thanks to Chelsea, their cute little fox shifter friend. A blown up image of the house from SearchNet was pinned to the board with Qertec below it with a question mark. Their names were listed, their companion names written smaller underneath theirs. Various article clippings were hung on the board from some unknown creatures as it was called in the articles that had been killing mass amounts of women after they willingly slept with them.

The details were pretty sick, but the women were stupid why were they sleeping with the thing? They had to know what would happen to them afterwards. “What’s up?” Scarlett asked coming into the room, she was in her fold down black lace up combat boots, sexy high wasted black shorts and a black crop top. Her French roast brown hair was in a singular braid, and her shamrock green eyes were hidden behind sunglasses.

“The house still huh?” Her sister asked looking at Clovers laptop screen. “We should just go there, right now, why its day time.” Troy suggested. She would have to agree with that. “Yeah, let’s just get it over with I don’t really want to go explore it at night.” She didn’t want to explore it at all really but they kept hitting dead ends. “I’ll text Jenna and the others to meet us there.” Clover said shutting her laptop and standing up. “We can take my truck.” Troy offered. They nodded okay and began heading right back out the door. Their elders had the library shut off just for them to have access to. The MCC upper floors weren’t open to the public anyways.

They made their way back down to the lobby where Cooper, a purple haired fae was on his way to them. Scarlett grabbed his hand and pulled him with them. “Not today coops, were going exploring.” He laughed and just went with it. They all got in Troy’s Denali and he headed towards Salkova Hills. It was a newly developed area only about four years old. It had been developed after the alliance was formed. It was a wooded secluded area that had new roads and a new running trail through the woods. No houses were here at all which made it odder this is where the abandoned house was at all by its lonesome.

It took them approximately thirty minutes to get to the road that went on and on around a bend with trees on either side of it. They decided to walk from here, they weren’t sure about pulling the truck through the over growth on the driveway to the house. They had ridden past it before so they knew where it was. Troy p
ulled beside her sisters flashy Mercedes and they all climbed out. Jenna like she and Scarlett had the same tan olive skin as her, her golden blonde baylage hair was pulled into a chic bun and she was wearing her lime green and gray active wear outfit, her tight tank said Get Up & Dance. Chelsea was with her in her own active wear.

Chelsea had shoulder length brown hair with thin blonde highlights. She was just under five-feet and had brown eyes. “I’m so excited!” Chelsea pumped her fist in the air. “Only you would be excited about this.” Jenna laughed. They made their way down the long road towards the house. Troy had stopped without asking and grabbed her some shoes that matched her skirt. She thanked him for his way of thinking she really didn’t want to explore in her heels. Clover already had on little tennis shoes that matched her dress.

As they walked down another road off of the one they had started down she could already see the overgrowth of the houses driveway. It started where two iron gates hung pitifully from the brick pillars they were attached to. It was above her head, that’s how bad it was. “I hope there’s nothing crawly in there.” Jenna muttered. Tall trees stood on either side of the drive going all the way back. They were dead, all their leaves were gone.

“Let’s do this.” She pushed forward through the tall grass and weeds making sure to keep her mouth closed, she knew the driveway had to go back a little ways because the house was centered beyond it. So she was caught by surprise when the overgrowth ended suddenly. “Someone is taking care of this place.” Scarlett said from beside her now. That was apparent. They were now on a long smooth dirt road leading straight back to where the large stone beige mansion stood alone like a foreboding fortress in the center of the large circular clearing. Flat green grass spread out on either side of the road and around the house.
