  Her eyes were shining. “I shall keep it very safe, James, for it means more to me than ever now. When the time comes that we have to sell it … then it’ll be like — ”

  “Don’t think about that,” he said, and held out an arm. “I have a brougham waiting. You know Cape Town better than I. I’ll leave it to you to choose where we shall have luncheon, Katharine. But first … ”

  “Yes, James?”

  He laughed. “Don’t tell me I’m too forward,” he said, “but I’m claiming my reward,” and he bent towards her. There was a faint blush on her cheeks at his words, but she turned her face up to his, and her lips parted a little. Gently, he took her in his arms.
