Urban Climber 2 Page 12

by Hunter, S. V.

A touch of icy coolness caresses the tip my nose. I drop my head back to the inky sky, and oh my goodness, it’s starting to snow! Wow, it’s so beautiful—like something out of a fairytale. I’ve never seen snow before—well, not for many, many years. I hand my suitcase to the closest cabbie and throw my arms in the air, spinning around under the icy flakes as they fall down and over me.

  “Where to?”

I hardly notice the driver’s voice. It’s like he’s not even there. I’m too caught up in my own thoughts. I feel blissful. Calm. Like all my issues have shrunk down to nothing. It’s like I’m a figurine. A teeny, tiny figurine inside one of Mom’s snow globes. No one can get to me here. I’m safe. Even the monkey is gone. It’s just me and the snow.

“Ma’am? Where do you want to go to?”

I giggle, as I keep spinning around. “I’m sorry, but I’m not sure, sir. Can you please give me a minute to think about it?”

The cabbie nods silently and slips back into the driver’s seat. I’m grateful for his patience, although, I’m sure the meter will be running. Hell, you know what? Let it run. I don’t care anymore. I’ve got change. I may need a lot more than what I’ve got, but I’ve got some. I lift my face up to the cool night air and close my eyes. This is so magical. If I hadn’t come back, I would’ve missed the snow. I would’ve missed the feeling of the flakes falling onto my face, softly, gently, like butterfly kisses catching in my hair, like a million stars. I would have missed …

  “Ra?”

I’ve got to stop doing this. I’ve dreamt about him every night since we were together. The way he touched me, the way he kissed me, the way he made me feel. I exhale, opening my eyes as the snowflakes continue to fall around me. He’s nowhere. Not above me, not in front of me. It was just my red-faced monkey, doing its thing again. Stirring up my emotions just because it can.

  “I got your messages.”

I look over my shoulder, and I can hardly believe my eyes. I blink once and then again through the falling snow. There he is. Exactly how he was when I first saw him. Ripped jeans, head down, his grey hoody pulled down and over his eyes. He came. After everything … he came. I’m scared to move, scared to breathe, scared to do anything in case it wrecks this perfect moment.

“I can’t believe it. Ash?” I whisper. “Is that really you?”

“Yes.” He smiles “I got your messages.”

“You did?” I whisper, my eyes filling with tears.

“Yes,” he laughs, “all fifty-eight of them.”

“Oh.” I pull a face. “Sorry about that. Once I got started, I found it hard to stop.”

  “So why did you?”

I pause, not knowing where to look. “I’d rather not say.”

His lips curl up into one of the most beautiful smiles I’ve ever seen. “Did you run out of credit?”

“You got me,” I exhale. “If it wasn’t for that, I never would’ve stopped.”

“Why didn’t you just call me?”

“I wouldn’t have known what to say.”

He slowly walks towards me, pushing his hoody from his eyes. “You don’t have to explain anything to me.”

  “I don’t?”

“No,” he whispers, pulling me into his arms.

“But the way I acted was horrible. Why would you just let me off the hook like that?”

  “Because I love you, Ra.”

“You do?” I whisper, looking up and into his sparkling grey eyes.

“Yes,” he smiles, leaning towards my lips. “Now, let me take you home.”

  “But what about—?”

“You think too much, baby.” He grins, framing my face in his warm hands. “Just stop for one second and let me kiss you.”
