“I’ll get it,” Caine said, pushing to his feet once more. “I’m regretting letting Jarvis have the night off, though.”
DeeDee knew better. Their butler was like another member of their family, and no way would Caine let the guy be separated from his loved ones over the holidays. In fact, he’d not only given the guy Christmas Eve off with pay, he’d given him the entire week between Christmas and New Year’s Day off as well. And supplied him with a tidy bonus as a gift.
Caine stepped back to allow a somewhat agitated Stan inside. He rushed into the living room where everyone was sitting.
“Hey, buddy. What’s wrong?” Dex handed him an eggnog. “Something happening down at the station?”
Stan sniffled then scratched at the marks Ursula had left on his neck. They still weren’t healed, from what DeeDee could see. He wriggled inside his suit then scowled. “Nothing’s going on at all at the station, but I’ve been doing a little more digging into the Rockwood case while I’m still here.”
“Aren’t you heading back to the home office soon?” Dex asked, giving DeeDee an eager glance.
“Early tomorrow. I won’t see either of you before I leave. That’s one of the reasons I came over.” Stan sipped the eggnog thoughtfully. “The other reason is that one thing is still niggling at me about this whole murder mess. Gina Presti claimed there was a giant werewolf that busted down the door of her trailer and held her until the police arrived. She says it’s what broke up the fight between her and Deputy Clawson.” He turned to DeeDee. “But I didn’t see anything about it in your report, Deputy.”
Stunned, she opened her mouth to respond then closed it. Caine tensed beside her. She’d hoped that whole thing would just fall through the cracks, unnoticed.
“Oh...well,” Dex said, coming to her aid, “I wouldn’t put much stock in what Gina Presti claims she saw. After all, she lied to get away with murdering Tucker Rockwood. Who’s to say she isn’t lying about seeing this wolf too?”
“Hmm.” Stan shrugged, that slightly dazed look coming over his features again. “Yeah, I guess you’re right. Imagine paranormals here in the nice town of Silver Hollow. Ha!”
“Yeah, imagine,” Dex and DeeDee echoed.
Stan chugged down the rest of the eggnog then handed the empty glass to Dex. “Thanks for inviting me for the drink. I gotta go pack.” Stan shuffled out the door, then turned to face them one last time, halfway out onto the porch. “I’ll be back in a few weeks to check in again. Call me crazy, but I sense there’s more under the surface here in Silver Hollow. Oh, and keep an eye on that medical examiner, Ursula. There’s something…odd about her. Who knows? Maybe I’ll have to move here myself one day to investigate.”
The front door closed behind him, and everyone burst into laughter. Given how mesmerized Stan had been the last week or so, under Ursula’s thrall, he couldn’t find his butt with both hands. Though DeeDee suspected time and distance would change that. The further he was from Ursula the more the influence of her bite would wear off. She’d have to be on guard when good old Stan returned. For now, though, she had the holidays to celebrate and a new husband to love and adore.
While the others talked amongst themselves, DeeDee nuzzled her face into Caine’s neck, happier than she could ever remember being. “I love you, Caine MacPherson,” she whispered against his skin.
Caine cupped her cheek, forcing her to meet his gaze. “I love you too, my lass.”
Her mate’s kisses and love were the best gifts DeeDee ever received.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR
