“Rebel without a cause this one,” Alex mumbled.

“Even so Leo. You are the reason I am an escaped prisoner. So it’s only fair that you share your winnings with me,” I chuckled. Alex made me jump as she leaped up cheering for Josh’s team, as the scored yet again. Either Josh’s was really good, or the other team were playing with their eyes shut.

“I don’t think so Elle. I’m a twenty two year old man who lives on a basic budget. It’s all mine,” He chuckled, rubbing his hands together pretending to be a greedy man.

“Well being a sidekick to the marvellous Princess doesn’t exactly pay much either,” Alex moaned. Taking her eyes off the game for a second she stuck her tongue out at me.

  “You are not a sidekick...”

“You’re demoting me?” She mocked, pretending to look shocked.

“No, I’m promoting you. You can have my job seeing as I won’t be needing it soon,” I mocked back. Turning her head from the game, she gave me a disapproving look then wrapped her arms around me. Pulling me in she laid her head on my shoulder.

“I wish you wouldn’t talk like that Elle. Even if no one else believes you can take care of yourself. I know you can, and I know you will pull through this,” She paused lifting her head from my shoulder.

“Besides if anything happened to you. I have no idea what I’d do,” she smiled a weak smile at me.

“Don’t be stupid Al. You would be fine without me,” I smiled back at her and placed my head on hers.

“Anyway I’m not going anywhere. I’m a lot tougher than a seventeen year old demon, who is throwing a teenage tantrum because he is bored,” I muttered.

“You two are so depressing,” Leo mumbled. We both looked at him. He shuffled in his seat awkwardly. Chuckling I looked at the scores of the game. I hadn’t been paying attention to. I wasn’t a very good mascot now why didn’t that feel like a shame. Forty to forty three, they were winning by three points with four minutes on the clock. Come on Josh’s team, give me something good to cheer about.

“Come on Winderal!” I cheered jumping out of my seat. “Winderal. Winderal,” I chanted. The other fans in the stands around us began to chant with me. Jake Monroe sped towards the basket as the last few seconds disappeared on the timer. The court fell silent as he threw the ball into the direction of the net. Time seemed slow as it circle the rim of the net.

“YAY!!” We all cried as the buzzer went off, and the ball fell through the basket and bounced on the shiny floor. High fiving Leo and Alex, we all rushed down to the court to celebrate with Josh and his team.

“Well done Josh,” I cried ruffling his sweaty blonde hair.

“You three staying for drinks with the team?” He asked drying himself with a white towel.

“I actually have a previous engagement Josh...”

“Yeah and she kind of invited me to,” Alex interrupted.

“Well I’m defiantly up for a drink or two,” Leo interjected.

“Awesome. Ok we will see you guys later,” Josh and Leo waved good bye as they followed the team into the changing room.

Alex stared vacantly after them for a couple of seconds before turning towards me.

“Sorry what did you say,” She asked.

“Nothing,” I replied. Well someone’s head is in the clouds that’s for sure.

“Speak,” I commanded as we made our way out of the court with the mass of the crowd. Searching around I was still conscious of the fact, that I had two burly men searching for me.

“I have nothing to say,” she replied pushing through the crowd, out into the cool open night air. Alex fiddled with her hair as we crossed the open college grounds, towards the metal gate that led out of college.

“Oh I see how it is. I have to talk about my messed up romantic life but you. You get to keep yours bottled up,” I mocked holding the gate open for her.

“Thanks and fine, as long as you promise not to judge,” she sighed as I followed her out of the gate and into the field that surrounded it. Following the path that was busy with other people making their way down back to the castle. We diverted down a smaller path before we saw the castle gates.

“We are not going anywhere until you spill the beans.” Standing in front of her so she couldn’t go any further, I pouted at her.

“You are so annoying sometimes Elle. Fine I think I may have a small tiny weenie crush on Leo,” She whispered showing me how small with her finger and thumb. I really have been wrapped in my own problems recently. Usually I could tell when Alex was crushing on someone, but this one was not in my mind. I had an incline before, but I had put it back to my mind. I was having too many of my own problems with Logan.

“I knew it! When you were flirting with him the other day, and you have been spending a lot of time with him recently. Hmm I can see why, he is a bit of a stud muffin,” I babbled.

“I know right... Shit!” She cried pulling me into a bush. I fell back and scrapped my arm on a branch, on the bush I fell into. Blood seeped through the teal fabric of the cardigan I was wearing.

“What was that about?” I whispered holding my arm.

“Pinkie and perky,” She whispered. Crawling out of the bush, I made my way to where she was standing. Surely enough Rory and Gary were scanning the perimeter of the castle gardens. Looking for me with distressed expressions on their faces. I feel bad for them, they are going to be in trouble with my father when they tell him that they let me escape.

“Maybe I should just stay at home. I don’t want them to lose their jobs,” I sighed.

“Adabelle Gabriel live a little!” Alex moaned.

“Alexandra Edelweiss. You are a bad influence on me,” I smiled. Inspecting the wound on my arm, the blood had stopped but had soaked my cardigan sleeve. Taking off the garment I screwed it into a ball and made it disappear into thin air. Couldn’t have a piece of clothing with blood on lying around, people could come up with the wrong conclusion, and I really don’t want that.

“I do try,” She chuckled, wiping away the blood on my arm with a tissue.

“So my double life friend. Do you need to brief me on anything going on in the world of mortals,” She asked with a bemused grin on her face. I’m glad she found my normal life funny because I didn’t and I was the one who had to live it. It felt like I hadn’t seen my mortal friends in ages, but it had only been a day. Poppy would certainly want to know where I had been today. Seeing as I had to skip college to attend Josh’s basket ball game.

“I love the fact that you have to be briefed, in order to attend a party with my friends,” I laughed quietly so that we weren’t found by my father’s soldiers

“It’s either that or I put my foot in it, and you know how I hate to do that,” She replied sarcastically. She loved causing awkward situations. If she wasn’t involved, she says it was thrilling watching people squirm. It was fun when it wasn’t you she was doing it to.

“Sure you do,” I mocked. “

But there isn’t anything to brief you on. They are just your run of the mill mortals with normal problems,” I smiled placing my hand her shoulder.

“I’m excited. It’s nice to see the people we protect. It's kind of like going to a zoo though. Seeing how people live without having any powers,” She smiled.

“The zoo? Wow ok,” I replied, puzzled to why a trip to the mortal realm is being associated with a trip to seeing caged animals. With one quick blink of an eye, we had orbed onto Blake Robinsons street, opposite his house.

“Whoa,” Alex gasped staring at the small two story house with awe.

  “It’s tiny,” She whispered.

“Not really. Come on the party is round the back.”

Taking her by the arm, I pulled her in the direction of Blake’s back gate, which led us into the already booming party. Glancing around the garden, I spotted the familiar ginger hair of Carries and marched my way through the drunken teenage crowd, to where my friends were sitting.

  “Hey guys. You remember Ale
x,” I greeted.

“Elle hey! Yeah we do, hey Alex,” Poppy exclaimed giving us both an awkward hug. I don’t understand why people insist on hugging others when they meet. It’s always one of those where do I put my arms hug.

“So where were you today Bale? You have just missed out on Poppy being blanked by Blake. It was rather funny,” Oscar chuckled handing me and Alex a drink.

“Blanked? How is that you make out with the guy a couple of weeks ago, and now he won’t even acknowledge your existence?” I chuckled dodging Oscar’s question.

“Who’s Blake then?” Asked Alex as she began searching the garden, that had doubled in size since we had arrived. There was no music on which was a bit odd. Glancing around I spotted Blake in the corner, talking to none other than Adam Huggleby. Who was the only human boy that I would consider dating. Dressed in a plain grey t shirt that clung to his perfectly shaped body, I couldn’t see his attractiveness anymore. That’s so weird, why does this boy looked so plain now when he was drop dead gorgeous less than three months ago.

“He’s with Adam Elle,” Poppy smiled cockily.

“I see that,” I replied taking a huge gulp of the lemonade I had in my hand.

The image of Logan’s perfectly divined body popped in place of Adam. I shook my head trying to remove his face from my mind.

  “Are you ok?” Alex whispered.

“I think I might be losing it, but other than that, I’m dandy,” I smiled weakly. How an earth have I let Logan get so far into my head. That the only boy I could think of or be attracted to, was him. Rolling my eyes in an attempt to distract myself, I finished off the remaining lemonade in my plastic cup and threw it into the over flowing bin behind me.

“You're thinking about Logan aren’t you,” Alex whispered.

“No,” I replied not even attempting to fool her. Sitting on the cold hard floor next to Poppy, I ushered for Alex to sit with me. She followed my lead with a huge smirk on her face. Refusing to look at her, I knew what she was thinking because I was thinking the same thing. Logan was defiantly clouding my thoughts.

“So Oscar, I see queen bee is here tonight. Has she spoken to you yet?” I asked. I had seen Emma as soon as we had entered the garden. Wearing barely any clothes, she was hard to miss. That girl had no dignity at all. If she wasn’t flaunting what she had, she was putting other people down. One day karma will severely bite her ass.

“Yeah I saw her, and a lot of her,” He chuckled. “No dignity at all.”

“I think she left that at home with the rest of her clothes,” Alex giggled as she saw the girl we had been talking about. Even though all these years I had tried to keep Alex separate from my college friends. I hadn’t really realised how much easier it was for them to get along together. I hated being away from Alex on the weekdays, so why had I never thought to involve her in my week days was beyond me.

“Why is there no music at this party?” I asked.

“Stereo is bust,” Adam replied as he sat down beside me. He sent a charming smile my way, and I couldn’t help but smile back. Any other girl would be giggling and blushing but me. No, apparently I only had eyes for one guy and he wasn’t even a guy, he was a demon.

“All these guys at this party and you’re telling me, not one of them can fix a stereo,” I chuckled.

“Apparently so,” He laughed. His laugh was sweet and made me smile, but it didn’t have the same effect it used to have on me. No hair on the back of my neck standing up and no butterflies in my stomach. This totally sucks, I really want to be attracted to this guy. Just so I can make a point to myself that I do not like Logan. So far I’m failing miserably.

“Feel free to take a crack at it Elle!” Robbie Militon, captain of the football team threw the stereo in my direction. Catching it in my hands, he looked at me in shock. Controlling my laughter I took a look at the broken stereo. All I need to do is run my finger along it to repair it with magic, but in order to look like I did manually. I’ll have to fiddle around a bit. Twiddling the knobs on the front, I caressed the base of the mechanical object and handed it back to Robbie.

“Now try it,” I smiled proudly. Pressing the power button music blared out from the speakers, deafening everyone in a five foot radius.

“Thanks Elle you’re a genius,” He cheered running off into the house with the blaring music. Alex rolled her eyes at me and chuckled as I smiled.

“Well she’s not just a mascot. She also a technician awesome,” Emma scoffed, approaching my group of friends.

“What do you want Emma?” I asked standing up, so I was the same height as her. I really didn’t need a pathetic human to put me down right now. She had no right to do so, and her I’m the best act that she had going on, was really starting to get on my nerves.

“Oh please.”Rolling her eyes, she pushed past me and sat next to Oscar much to Oscar’s dismay. There’s me thinking she actually knew when she wasn’t wanted.

“Didn’t realise I was watching mean girls,” Alex chuckled as I sat back down next to her.

“Trust me it’s like a daily re run,” I sighed.

“Don’t worry about her. She’s just threatened by you,” Adam broke in.

Rolling her eyes Emma gave Adam a devil stare, before pushing out her chest and folding her arms in defence mode.

“I am the cheer captain and also the hottest girl in college. Why would I be threatened by that,” She shrieked.

Well she didn’t hold back on her dislike to me. What had I ever done to her to upset her so much. It could have been back when I was twelve. I did sort of push her into a pile of mud, but that was a complete accident, she wasn’t looking where she was going, and I fell onto her. Doesn’t really give her the reason to look at me with pure hatred in her eyes though, it was nothing an apology and a bath couldn’t sort out.

“Right and you only got the captain job because you flashed Mr Anderson to get it,” He chuckled. We all gasped at her as she flipped her hair and stood up to walk off, not even attempting to deny the allegation.

“This is like one tree hill,” Alex laughed. I’m glad she was enjoying the show because I defiantly was. Emma had been embarrassed in front of us all. She was going to get her own back one way or another, and I know I’m going to be in the firing line. She’s has me dressing up as a shark, what more can she do to humiliate me.

  “Thanks,” I smiled.

“No problem. She gets on my nerves anyway. I hate girls who think they are all that. Nothing worse than a woman who thinks she rules the world,” He smiled taking a swig from the brown bottle in his hand. How about one that will someday rule half of it. Chuckling silently to myself, he stood up as someone called him from inside.

“See you later guys,” He exclaimed, heading towards the glowing light that came from the door into the house. The night sky darkened the busy garden. The only light source was the Christmas lights that were wrapped un evenly around the washing line that hung down through the middle of the garden. People continued to be caught in them as they walked to and fro in the small space. I preferred these smaller parties rather than the huge banquets my father threw in Gracia. It’s a lot less awkward for me, with no false smiles just to get me through the night. My phone vibration brought me out of my staring into space and back into the party.

You are in big trouble lady!

The text from my father made my stomach knot. It didn’t take him that long to be informed of my disappearance. I would have thought Gary and Rory had a little bit more of a back bone.

  I’m at the Bales

I replied there is no way he is going to believe that. He knew me too well but obviously not well enough to see this coming.

“You alright Elle? Who’s that?” Poppy asked looking at the phone in my hands.

“Just Beth wondering where I am,” I lied. The lies really do roll off my tongue these days. I’m sure that’s not a good thing but times like these I forget why.

Taking the phone from my hand, Alex read the me
ssage from my father and sighed. She knew we had to go back before he turned up here looking for me. I’m certain that would be crossing his mind this very minute.

“We got to go!” I exclaimed as a small blue light circled the heads of the half drunken teenagers. They batted the blue light away from their faces. Not thinking anymore of it than a wasp or fly.

“Oh ok,” Alex mumbled standing up slowly as I pulled her by the arm.

“Sorry guys we will see you later.”

Speeding away from my confused group of friends, I clasped my hands over the blue light and sped out the party.

Waiting till we were across the road, I opened my hands to reveal a small blue haired pixie that was cutting my hand with her mini knife.

“Bloody hate pixies,” Alex muttered as I lifted the pixie to my eye line by her collar. Fairies I can handle because they are small human like creatures. That help others out with their fairy dust, but pixies caused far too much trouble. Even though, they were similar to fairies, I could tell the difference by their menacing glow and rebel outfits.

“What are you doing here,” I asked as the Pixie kicked her legs frantically and fluttered her wings in a bid to escape.

“I ain't telling you! You ain't the boss of me,” She shrieked. Glancing back at the open gate that lead to Blake’s back garden, I pursed my lips. This wasn’t exactly the best place to be having this conversation.

Shoving her back into my hands, I closed them and began to walk half a mile away from the big group of mortals. Kicking and punching my hands trying to break free, I felt the sharp point of her dagger as she repeatedly poked and prodded it into my skin.

“Calm down you little Twerp,” I snarled taking her by the collar of her brown t shirt again as we came to a stop.

“Get your filthy hands off me”, She shrilled throwing her dagger about like it was going to do damage to us. Alex chuckled as she took the mini pin out of the Pixies hand. She struggled for a second before Alex prised it from her tight grip.
