One Man Falls Page 3

by Mark R. Healy

  To never give in.

Someone else will take my place.

“The game is changing,” she said, never taking her eyes from the sunrise, “and we need to change with it. We need more shelters. More early warning systems. Our Sentinels need to be programmed to adapt, to predict. And that’s just the beginning.”

Mr. Henderson adjusted his glasses, almost as if he couldn’t quite believe this was the same sixteen-year-old girl he’d known before. He searched her face for a moment, then looked up at the sky.

“Is that really going to help, Jahni? They’ll keep picking us off, just like they’ve done since the war began.”

“They can pick off as many of us as they like,” Jahni said, her voice steely. She thought of the way Papa Jack had looked at her in the pickup, and that gave her strength. Belief. “When one of us falls, another will stand up to take their place. We’ll form a line against them and we won’t break, no matter what. That’s how it’s always been in war.” She took a few steps across the soil and breathed deeply, silently celebrating the only thing she could—another day of freedom. Another day of life. She turned back to Mr. Henderson and set her mouth in determination. “And that’s how it’s always going to be.”
