“Yeah you do.” I pointed at him. “Plus we lost our championship, so you need to win.” Noel shook his head and left without saying a word. “Think Beckett will help Noel?”
“Maybe.” Kris reached for my hand. “It’s been several years since he worked in a kitchen.”
“What does he do now?”
“He’s a bartender.” Then he wrapped his arms around my waist. “Are we going to talk about Beckett and Noel all night?”
“Maybe.” I placed my hands on his shoulders. “Unless you have something better to do?”
“Ms. Sexy Pants,” Kris lifted my body up off the ground. “I have so many things we need to be doing right now.”
“Ms. Sexy Pants, huh?” I giggled and peppered kisses all over his face. Less than a month ago I went to Atlanta for a baking competition. I may have lost the competition but I gained something better. Kris had managed to completely change my world. “I think you better turn the oven off and show me, Mister.”
Epilogue
Kris
One year later…
“Wait, put that back.” I covered Morgan’s hand before she could grab a cookie and shoved her out of the kitchen.
“What the…” Morgan stumbled and placed her hand on the wall to prevent herself from falling.
“Millie will be here any minute.” I made sure my sister was okay before continuing to shove her out the door. “You need to be gone. Poof. Out of sight.”
“Fine.” She pushed my hand away and walked down the front porch steps. “You better call me later and tell me everything.”
“Tell you what?” Millie stepped up beside Morgan. “You okay?” She touched her hand on Morgan’s shoulder. “You look like you’ve seen a ghost.”
What the hell? Millie was already here. Fuck.
“See you later, Morgan.” I followed my sister to her car and opened the door to help her into the seat. “I’ll call you later,” I leaned in closer and whispered before standing back up and walking over to Millie. “That was fast.” I wrapped my arm around her waist and waved goodbye to Morgan as she pulled out of the driveway.
“Yeah, there was no traffic today thankfully.” She was just ending a nine day stretch at the firehouse. “Sarah may stop by later. She wants to grab some of those orange and nutmeg sugar cookies you made last night.”
“Um, yeah, sure.” I grabbed her hand and we walked back up the steps together.
“You okay,” Millie asked and squeezed my hand. “You seem off.”
“I’m fine.” I was lying of course. I was far from okay.
For the last two months I had planned out the perfect get-away. Then we had to cancel our flight because of some unforeseen commitments. So that meant rethinking our plans and finding a way to still make our time together very magical.
My challenge was to make my house feel like the perfect place to escape.
I told my friends they were not allowed to pop in or visit for four whole days. Millie was going to find that very suspicious since our friends dropped in on a regular basis.
She stopped in the middle of the living room and turned to face me. “You’re sweating and it’s the middle of winter. Do we need to go to the ER?” I closed my eyes and realized all my plans were slowly failing. “Kris.” Millie placed the palm of her hand on my cheek. “What is it?”
Everything about my relationship with Millie was unconventional. We met and hit it off immediately. I knew from the first moment I laid eyes on her, she was the one.
I glanced around the living room and back at Millie. Then I dropped down to one knee.
“Kris. Oh shit.” She gasped and threw her hand over her mouth.
“I wanted to take you to Hawaii.” I closed my eyes and took in a few deep breaths. “One evening we would go to a luau. You would laugh at something I said and fall against my chest. I would reach in my pocket at that moment.” I reached in my pocket and brought out the little black box. “And hold this out in front of you.” I looked down at the ring. “Then I would say, Mildred Andrews would you make me the happiest man and be my wife?”
Millie dropped down in front of me. “Then I had to go and cancel the trip.”
“It’s okay. Hawaii isn’t going anywhere.” I pulled the ring out of the box. “I need to hear just one thing.”
“What’s that?” She held her hand out.
“Will you make me happy for the rest of my life.” I grabbed her hand and waited to place the ring on her finger. “So, what do you say, Millie? Will you be my wife?”
“Yes, a thousand times yes.” I slid the ring on and she engulfed me in a hug. “On one condition.” She leaned closer and looked at me.
“Only one?”
“You never ever call me Mildred ever again.”
“But–”
She placed her index finger over my mouth. “Nope. Never again.”
I leaned forward and kissed her lips. “Yes ma’am, Ms. Sexy Pants.”
“That’s much better, My delicious sugar cookie.”
