Well, as long as she had those things, she didn’t need to run his life. Just because the man was perfect for the job, that didn’t mean he had to take it.
They had nearly reached the ranch before he spoke again.
“I guess being wrongly accused of murder does give a man a certain insight,” Mitch said slowly. “You know, I think I’d enjoy being on the right side of the law for a change. I’m kind of looking forward to getting started.”
It was too bad he’d probably be too late to solve the recent rash of kidnappings. But Kate had a feeling there’d be plenty of other matters to investigate.
Moose had once said that nothing ever happened in Grazer’s Corners. Well, everyone was entitled to be wrong once in a while.
As they parked at the house, Kate could see Loretta and Mario far down the slope, heading out onto the range in a four-wheel-drive vehicle. Beside her, she heard Mitch singing beneath his breath.
It was the song with which he’d serenaded her: “La Speranza di Amore.” The hope of love.
Except now they had more than just hope.
He came around to lift her down, and they walked to the house, both humming the tune. And laughing. And hurrying to get inside, where they had important things to talk about, and even more important things to do that didn’t require talking at all.
