  19 This genetically inherited condition is characterised by changes in the pigmentation (skin coloration) as well as the growth of tumours along nerves in the brain, skin and other parts of the body. The symptoms are very variable between sufferers, but most adults with the condition develop benign tumours on or just below the skin. These tumours can be very minor and hard to spot, or they can be very extensive and disfiguring.

  Dr Xanthé Mallett is a forensic anthropologist and television presenter. Xanthé holds a PhD (University of Sheffield), a Research Masters (University of Cambridge) and a Bachelor of Science (University of Bradford). She has presented television series for the BBC (UK), National Geographic Channel (US), and Foxtel’s History Channel and Channel Ten (Australia). Xanthé has co-edited two textbooks and has contributed to numerous books, journals and news items. This is her first book.
