The Only Solution (Crowley County Series Book 3) Page 24

by T. E. Killian

Daisy and Mike were sitting on the sofa with their arms around each other and Sarah was sitting in an armchair across from them.

“Oh Sarah.” Daisy called out. “I almost forgot to tell you. I’m going back into nursing and I’m going to be Stella’s office nurse.”

Sarah beamed back at her. “Oh Daisy. That’s simply wonderful.”

She grew thoughtful and then she said, “Well, I guess I can do it now.”

Mike had been quiet but that brought him into the conversation. “Do what Mom?”

She smiled at both of them. “You see, I’ve been around the residents of your home so much Daisy, especially Bert that I’ve fallen in love with them all. And, as I watched the two of you I knew it was only a matter of time before you two came together and you would be leaving the home.”

She took a sip of her iced tea before continuing. “So, I’ve just been biding my time waiting. Now I’m going to apply for your position.”

“Sarah! That’s so unbelievable. Oh I just know you would be perfect to live and work with my special people.” She thought for a moment. “And I just know that the sweet older couple who head up the Sparrow Foundation would love to have a retired teacher like you there.”

Sarah left shortly to see about supper leaving Daisy alone with Mike.

Mike was the first to speak. “Once we’re married, you and Lucy will live here with me, right?”

She smiled back at him. “Of course. Even if Sarah isn’t able to move out right away, with three bedrooms we’ll get along just fine for as long as we need to.”

They both became quiet. She didn’t know about Mike, but she was deep in her thoughts. Thoughts of a husband and a little boy who were no more. But also her thoughts were on a new husband and a little girl. And maybe a brother or sister or so for her.

After a few minutes like that, She looked at him and he looked back. They both said the same word at the same time. “When?”

After they both stopped laughing, Mike said, “The sooner the better. My sister and her family can get here fairly easy from Tulsa.”

Daisy thought for a moment and said, “Do you have a calendar?”

“Mom.” He called out and when she appeared in the kitchen doorway he said, “Could you bring us the calendar off the wall in the kitchen?”

When she did, Daisy knew Sarah wanted to stay but one look from Mike sent her back to the kitchen.

They opened the calendar out between them and Daisy lifted September out of the way and said, “How about the first Saturday in October. That would be the fourth and that would give us almost exactly a month to get ready. And I’m sure that would also give my parents plenty of time to be here from Florida too.”

Mike didn’t answer. He just pulled Daisy to him for a long kiss, which was interrupted by a giggle. They both turned to see Lucy standing in the hallway rubbing her eyes.

“When are we going to marry Mike Mommy?”
