His fingers skimmed restlessly up and down her spine, and his mouth burrowed under her hair, finding the warm, soft skin at the base of her throat. He nibbled briefly, and then gave a quiet sigh.
‘What is it?’ she asked.
‘I was just wishing that we weren’t in Charles’s office,’ he said wryly. ‘It puts definite limits on what I want to do!’
Since she could feel the hard ache of his body, she knew perfectly well what he wanted from her. He eased her away from him a little, to keep his frustration within limits, and contented himself with another fiercely demanding kiss.
‘There are other places we could go,’ she said a little shyly.
‘I know,’ he growled. ‘And I’m trying very hard not to give in to the temptation.’
‘You are?’ She blinked at him in surprise. ‘Why?’
‘Because I’ve got to face your parents at the weekend, and I’m not sure I can look them straight in the eye if I’ve just taken their daughter to bed!’
Cathryn gazed at him in delight. ‘Nicholas, you’re old-fashioned!’
One dark eyebrow shot up. ‘That’s the first time I’ve ever been called that.’ His fingers cupped the swell of her breast, lingered for a long, delicious moment over the small, hard peak, and then regretfully withdrew again.
‘I’m going to drive myself a little crazy if I keep this up for much longer,’ he muttered.
‘What should we do instead, then?’ she asked, her own voice increasingly breathless.
‘First, we’ll go and buy a ring. Perhaps your parents will approve of me more quickly if we go along with all the formalities. And afterwards we’ll go and see Charles, to tell him that he’s about to lose a secretary, but gain a sister-in-law.’
‘And then?’ Cathryn prompted softly, leaning gently against him.
Nicholas gave a faint groan. ‘And then I might have to forget all my good intentions! Perhaps I could wear dark glasses at the weekend. Then I could look at your parents without giving anything away!’
That sounded very satisfactory to Cathryn. She had begun by not wanting to have anything to do with this man. Now she didn’t want to let him out of her sight for a single second.
And, amazingly, he felt exactly the same way about her. It was going to take her a very long time to get used to that remarkable fact.
Then Nicholas smiled down at her, his green eyes open and loving, and it occurred to her that it might not take any time at all.
