“There were many times I wanted to leave him, but as soon as we got married, I let him talk me into moving out of state, away from my family. He ended up finding work, but I had no job, and no money. I was completely dependent upon him. But when I got pregnant, I decided I wanted to move back home, be near my family.” The bitterness she’d thought she’d buried long ago, swamped her all of a sudden, almost choking her, but even with it clogging her throat, she managed to speak.

“For months we fought over me moving back home until one day it all just came to a head. I lost the baby, but then I was just lucky to be alive after what he did. He went to jail, and with my help, the state sent him to prison for fifteen months. I moved back home, finished school, and never looked back.”

Maia thought hard on her last statement. There was truth to it. She hadn’t looked back. She forced herself never to think about what happened all those years ago until the memories were so faint, that there were times when it was as if it had never happened. But she still wore the scars. Not physically, because those had healed long ago. But her inability to trust, to love, those scars still ran deep.

“What happened to him? Your ex-husband?”

Maia looked at Chad then and her heart melted at the compassion in his eyes, his love for her so clear in their emerald depths. She hadn’t quite known what to expect, what his reaction would be, but then, she should have known. Chad had never once judged her, never put her down or made her feel less than. Chad was not her ex-husband, he never had been, and she knew he would never treat her with anything but compassion and tenderness, as he always had.

“He died,” she said softly, finally answering his question. “He was killed in prison by another inmate.”

Chad cupped her cheek then as he leant in to kiss her gently. “That was very brave of you,” he said when their lips parted. “Thank you.”

  “For what?”

“For telling me the truth. For letting me in.”

She smiled at him, as she gave his hand a slight squeeze. A few days ago it would have seemed impossible for her to open up to him about what had happened all those years ago, but after last night, she realised she needed him, and that she wasn’t weak because she did. Chad loved her, just as deeply as she loved him, and she knew without a doubt he would never knowingly do anything to hurt her.

It was finally time for her to move on, and move forward with her life. With a child on the way, and knowing she was loved by the man who held her heart, the future had never looked brighter.

  Epilogue

Maia let loose a long, soul stirring moan as Chad ploughed into her from behind, his fingers digging into the soft flesh at her hip.

“I’m coming,” he rasped as he filled her with his thick, hard shaft, over and over again.

She twisted her head around, her gaze clashing with his. Sweat dripped from the taut muscles of his torso that bunched and corded with his powerful thrusts as he slammed into her.

He’d wrung several orgasms from her weak and satiated body, she didn’t think she could come again, but when he drove into her with deep, savage thrusts, his head failing back as he shouted out her name, she experienced a heady rush of pleasure at the final moment of his release.

She gasped then shuddered as he buried his hard flesh within her one last time and exploded, his warm seed flooding her cunt, even as her own sticky release coated his cock, until the combined evidence of their lovemaking trickled out of her.

They both collapsed against the plush fur rug before the fireplace, their breaths coming in uneven pants.

It was a long while before either of them could move, and Chad was the first to stir as he rolled over onto his back and pulled her atop him.

She sighed against him, her fingers delicately tracing the fine hairs sprinkled along his chest.

“Do you think we should call them?” She asked, lifting her head from his torso to peer down at him.

“Who? Lena and Dylan?” He frowned when she nodded. “It’s our one year wedding anniversary, Maia,” he growled.

“I know, but what if CJ doesn’t sleep through the night because we’re gone and—”

He rolled his eyes. “Chad Jr. is fourteen months old and he’s been sleeping through the night for some time now. We’re only going to be gone for one more night, and besides, it’ll be good practice for them.”

Maia thought of Lena, who was now three months along in her pregnancy. She smiled. Yes, a fussy toddler that refused to fall asleep would certainly be good practice for them both, but her smile faltered at the thought of her son crying throughout the night because he missed his parents, or…

Chad sighed as he shifted his weight so that he could bring her face closer. “We can leave the cabin tonight if you want to. I know it’s hard being away from him for the first time,” he said softly, touching her cheek. “Believe me, it’s hard for me too.”

She shook her head, her smile rueful. “No. You’re right. It’s our first wedding anniversary and it’s only one more night. Besides, I talked to them just an hour ago and they said he was still asleep. I’m sure he’s fine.”

Chad stared at her, a knowing smile on his face.

“What?” She demanded when he just shook his head at her, his smile growing wider.

“And you’re sure you’re ready to have another baby?”

Her heart did that tiny flip flop thing whenever Chad looked at her like that, with tenderness and love shining bright in his eyes, but she knew him so well, that she easily glimpsed the longing buried deep, though he thought he hid it.

She touched his cheek. She was ready to have another child, they both were, but she knew Chad really wanted to try for a girl this time. Not that what they did this time, would somehow be different from what they did last time, she thought, with a grin. Still, he was ready to have another baby, and she too, couldn’t wait to expand their family.

She couldn’t believe she’d fought against this for so long. She’d never been happier. Being married to Chad, having their precious son, had filled her life with such joy, that she was ever grateful she’d finally come to her senses.

“Yes, I’m sure.” She tapped her finger against his chest. “But are you sure?”

“That I’m ready to have another baby?” Mischief twinkled in his eyes when he rolled her beneath him, and she gasped when she felt the insistent press of his cock against her, and realised he was already hard again. “I think you have your answer.”

“No, this just proves you’re horny.”

He winked at her. “That too.”

And then he surged forward, and she almost forgot how to breathe, she certainly lost all thought, as her body took over, and once again she was swept away into the tumultuous storm of pleasure and bliss, where nothing else mattered but her and Chad, and the rhythm of their bodies coming together as one.
