“Maybe we can share now.”
“How do you mean?”
“Well, my mom likes you a lot. I’m pretty sure she might like you more than she likes me,” Olivia joked, and Hilary smiled at her lover. “And I can share your dad?”
“I’d like that, but do you know what I’d like more?”
Olivia shook her head as she stared lovingly into her girlfriend’s eyes.
“Finishing off what we started earlier.” She leaned up and found Olivia’s lips, kissing them gently, encouraging.
“Oh, well I’m not going to argue there,” Olivia announced, kissing her back with a lightness that sent tingles up and down her spine.
~MB~
The following morning came with a refreshing new start that had Hilary smiling. Not speaking to her dad all this time had been the worst period of her life. He was her strongest supporter, the person she looked up to and took advice from. However, the positive that came from this was how much she now considered Olivia to be her person, her go-to shelter in the storm.
The phone rang, its loud shrill sound breaking the quiet as she made coffee. Olivia was still in bed, awake but not ready to get up yet, so Hilary grabbed the handset and answered it.
“Hello!”
“Good morning, am I speaking to Olivia Copeland?” The very British voice came through loud and clear. Hilary hadn’t spoken very much to Ava, but she remembered that she spoke just like this and it got her hackles up instantly.
“Uh no, I’ll just get her for you. Can I ask who is calling?” she asked tentatively, ready to put the phone down should it be Ava. She was aware that Olivia had been to see her and firmly put an end to everything, but she wouldn’t put it past someone like Ava to not take no for an answer.
“Sure, it’s Camryn Thomas.”
“Oh, okay, I’ll just get her for you.” Hilary was suddenly excited. She placed the phone down quietly on the side and ran to the bedroom, jumping onto the bed and landing right next to Olivia’s smiling face.
“That was an entrance.” Olivia laughed at her girlfriend’s antics.
“You need to get up, Camryn Thomas is on the phone waiting for you.” She almost sang the last part and burst into laughter as her naked partner threw the covers off.
“What? Already? What does she want?” she babbled and swung her legs out of bed.
“Well, I am willing to lay money she wants to offer you the job!” Hilary said, clapping her hands excitedly as she followed Olivia out into the hallway.
She watched as Olivia steadied herself and got her breathing under control before she picked up the handset and said a confident, “Hello.”
It was quite humorous really, Olivia naked with her hair all mussy from the rampant expression of love they had shared earlier. She was nodding and agreeing to something that Hilary had no idea about, but from the way Olivia was smiling, it was clearly good news.
Hilary wandered back into the bedroom and waited patiently. Kneeling on the bed, she continued to watch through the open door as Olivia put the phone down and stood thinking for a moment before she casually strolled back into the bedroom.
She was glorious in Hilary’s opinion, every inch of her was gorgeous, and she didn’t care if she was biased about that.
“Well?” She was bouncing on the mattress on her knees, hands clasped together.
“She wants to speak to me before she makes her final decision.”
“That sounds positive.” Olivia nodded. “So, if Camryn Thomas wants to speak to you herself, then they must have said a lot of positive things about you after the interview.”
“Yeah, I guess so.” She grinned before biting her bottom lip. “I have to be there in an hour.”
“Where?”
“At OUT, she wants to speak to me now.”
“Oh, so we’re not meeting Joan and your mom?” Hilary was a little disappointed. She had been looking forward to the lunch date.
“No, you’re coming with me and we will go on from there.”
Now all she had to do was decide what to wear.
Chapter Forty-Nine
Olivia was like a whirlwind, showered, dressed, and in the car within 40 minutes. Hilary threw on some jeans and a clean top and was following her out of the door while still pulling her hair into a band.
It was a short drive to the club, and they were ten minutes early as they walked in through the doors of the place that right now was closed to the public.
Erin, the bar manager who had interviewed her, was behind the bar and smiled a greeting as Olivia and Hilary walked up to her.
“Hey, uh, I have a meeting with Ms Thomas,” she explained.
“Yeah, she called and said you would be here. Nice to see you again. She isn’t here yet though.”
“Oh, I’m early aren’t I? Should I wait in the car?”
“What? No, go take a seat and I’ll let her know you’re here when she arrives. Be warned though, she is often running late.” Erin grinned and nodded towards some tables on the far side of the room.
The table was a booth-style with room for six or more people to squash in and enjoy a night out together.
“I got a good feeling, Liv,” Hilary said. “Everything is gonna turn our way now.”
“Yeah?”
“Yeah. But whatever happens, I love you.”
“I love you more.”
“Never.” Hilary laughed as she squeezed her hand.
With two minutes to spare, Olivia looked up to see a tall, striking woman with her hands ruffling her short blonde hair walking confidently towards her.
“Hi, Cam Thomas,” she said, holding her hand out to Olivia.
“Olivia Copeland. This is my partner, Hilary Palmer.” She beamed with pride introducing her.
“Good to meet you, do you mind if I steal Olivia away just for a moment?” Cam grinned as she shook hands with Hilary as well.
“Of course not, I am perfectly happy sitting here.” Hilary smiled back; she wanted to make a good impression on this woman as much as Olivia did.
“Brilliant, grab yourself a drink from the bar.” Cam turned. “Olivia? Anything for you?”
“Oh no, I am fine actually, but thank you.” She followed Cam, turning briefly to Hilary, who gave her a double thumbs up. When they were out of sight Hilary finally breathed properly. This was important to Olivia, and that made it important for her too.
After a few minutes she made her way to the bar and asked for a water. Rather than walking all the way back to her seat, she chose to sit at the bar. Watching the staff go about their daily routines was more entertaining than just sitting by herself. At midday exactly, Erin asked if all staff were ready before she opened the club for business.
Hilary had been here a few times before, mainly in the evenings, but once or twice in the afternoons. It was quiet then, like it was now.
Two women walked into the bar together and sat three seats away from Hilary. The black woman smiled as she took a seat.
“Hey, someone beat us to it,” the other woman said, adding her own smile.
“Yeah,” the other agreed. They both waved at Gina, who wandered down the bar to them and without being asked, placed two beers on the bar in front of them. “Thanks G.”
“So, what brings you here so early? We normally get lunch and there is never anyone in here before us,” the first to speak asked.
“Oh, I am with my girlfriend, she has a meeting with Ms. Thomas.”
“Ah, well she will be fine, no need to look so nervous,” she said before adding, “Unless, me and Fran are the reason?” She chuckled and made Hilary laugh too. “Angie,” she continued, holding out her hand.
“Hilary, nice to meet you.” She shook both women’s hands and relaxed a little more. They all chatted amiably as the time passed, and soon enough, she could hear the tell-tale sounds of footsteps on stairs, and in seconds appeared the blonde Camryn Thomas and Hilary’s own beautiful girlfriend.
“Erin?” Cam called her manager
over. “So, I made an executive decision, and Olivia is now the new events manager as we discussed. She will be starting tomorrow.” Hilary whooped and pulled Olivia into a tight hug.
“I knew you would get it,” she whispered. “It’s a whole new beginning.”
“Hey, great. Welcome aboard.” Erin grinned, reaching out to shake hands. “You got time for a quick tour now?”
Olivia glanced quickly at her watch; she still hadn’t stopped smiling as she nodded. She turned once more to thank Cam for the opportunity.
“It’s a pleasure. Welcome to the family.”
