Bethany took a few hesitant steps toward her father, then looked back at Dillion as if for the last time. Dillion nodded his head, and she held up her head and walked confidently toward Gordon, who let go of Natalie and grabbed her.
Natalie ran for Dillion, who gathered her into his arms. “You’ll never get away with this,” Dillion said, to his father. “While Bethany was with us, she made several visits to an attorney who was happy to record her statements regarding her upcoming wedding and her desire to live with you.
His father snorted. “Do you think that’s going to make any difference? I can pay a hundred doctors to say that she’s not capable of making her own decisions.”
“Ah, but then you couldn’t marry her off, could you?” Dillion taunted. “And don’t forget about all the witnesses who’ve just spent a month with her.”
His father stared at him, realizing that he’d been beaten, but then a stubborn look spread across his face. “I’ll buy them off, threaten their families: I’ll have my way,” his father thundered.
Dillion shook his head. “You don’t rule the world, father, and it’s time you realized that.”
The look of pure hatred and madness that appeared on Gordon’s face made them both fall back a few steps, his anger so powerful that it could be felt in the air. “It’s time that you realized that I am in control, your life depends on me, you live and die by my choice, and that’s how it always been and how it will always be,” he said, pulling a gun out of his pocket.
Before she could even scream, the gun went off, and she could hear the bullet whizzing through the air. It hit Dillion in the middle of the chest, and she heard him gasp when it hit. He tumbled to the ground, blood oozing out of the smoking hole in his shirt.
“Oh my God, you shot him,” Natalie screamed at him.
“Maybe next time he’ll behave,” Gordon said, then grabbed Bethany, who was screaming, and dragged her to the car.
Natalie turned back to Dillion, horrified as blood poured from his chest. “Oh, Dillion, don’t die,” she said, putting her hands over the wound.
She opened her mouth to scream for help, but before anything came out, Michelle was at her side. “Let me look,” she said, prying Natalie’s hands away.
When she sucked in a deep breath, Natalie knew that it was bad. “Can you save him?” she asked.
Michelle looked at her then nodded. “But you’re going to have to help him, and, Natalie, if you do this, know that you’ll be attached to Dillion for the rest of your life.”
“I’ll do anything, Michelle; I love him,” she said, desperate.
“Okay, give me your hand,” Michelle said, then sliced a gash in the palm of her hand and let the blood drip into the wound.
Natale watched the blood drip and listened to the words Michelle repeated over and over, her heart breaking as Dillion stopped breathing. “It’s not working,” she said, her tears running freely into the wound as well.
Then the wound began to smoke and sizzle, each drop of her blood that fell closing the wound just a little more. Then Dillion took a huge breath and opened his eyes. “What happened?” he asked, looking down at his chest, then up at Natalie’s dripping hand.
“Natalie gave you some of her life force; it took both blood and tears, but you’re going to be okay,” Michelle said, then wrapped a cloth around Natalie’s hand. “I’ll leave you two alone.”
Natalie carefully rested her head on Dillion's chest as soon as the wound had closed over. “I thought I’d lost you,” she said, unable to stop the tears that soaked his chest.
“Look at me, Natalie,” Dillion said.
She picked up her head and looked into his eyes, which were clear and full of love. “I’m right here, sweetheart, thanks to you. You’re the bravest and strongest woman I know, and I knew it was the smartest thing I ever did to fall in love with you,” Dillion said.
“I love you too, Dillion, but Michelle said that I just bonded myself to you for life,” she said; when he didn’t say anything, she added, “I had to, it was the only way to save you.”
“I’ve got news for you: that happened a long time ago, but does this mean we don’t have to get married now?” Dillion teased, then pulled her down on top of him and kissed her.
