His Dirty Hands (The Montgomery Boys Book 2)

She nodded. “All right. Give us a minute to get ready.”
I went back into the kitchen and found Sawyer dipping a ladle into the enormous pot full of hot cocoa sitting on the stove beside the wine. He poured the thick, dark drink into a mug and topped it with a mountain of fresh whipped cream from the refrigerator.
“You going to take your coat off?” he asked as he took a long peppermint stick from a container on the table and dunked it down into his cocoa.
“No, I’m actually heading back outside.”
“Aren’t you going to spend any time with Gia and Gabby?” he asked, sounding slightly pushy.
“They are coming with me. I have a surprise for them.”
His smile got wide. “You’re going to show her today?”
“Yes, but don’t say anything,” I said. “She has no idea.”
Sawyer brought the mug up to his grinning lips for a long sip just as Gia came into the kitchen with Gabby. Both were decked out in layers of winter gear, with Gabby so bundled she couldn’t put her arms down beside her all the way. She wobbled along looking like a star.
“I have no idea about what?” Gia asked.
“The surprise,” Sawyer said, then rushed out of the room.
I glared after him, then turned a smile to Gia. “Come on. I’ll show you.”
We headed outside and I brought them out into the fields and across the expansive land. Gabby giggled and squealed as she jumped into the snow drifts and rolled over to make snow angels. I gathered up snow into a ball and tossed it at Gia. She gasped and made her own snowball to throw back at me.
Finally, we made it out to a stretch of pure, untouched snow. I held out my arms. “Here it is.”
Gia stopped beside me and stared out in front of us. “Here what is?”
“The surprise,” I said.
“I don’t understand what I’m looking at.” She looked around, taking in the mountains and trees, then looked at me again. “What is this all about?”
She was shivering and I got closer to cuddle her up against me for a second, then gestured at the land again. “This is ours. Everything you can see.”
“Ours?” Gia asked.
“I’m going to build a home for us right here,” I said. “On the ranch. A house for you, for Gabby, for all of us.”
Gia’s eyes lit up and her mouth opened slightly. She looked like she was going to swoon. “You’re going to build it?”
“Yes. I’m already working on designing it. I’ll start building in the spring. It can have anything you want inside. You decorate it. We’ll spend next Christmas around a Christmas tree in our own living room.” I reached down and scooped a laughing, wiggling Gabby into my arms. “Gabby will pick it out and I’ll cut it down.”
“How did I get so lucky to get a man like you?” Gia asked.
“Does that mean you like the idea?” I asked.
Gia cupped the back of my neck and pulled me down for a kiss. I gently lowered Gabby into the snow so I could wrap my arms around Gia.
“I love the idea of you getting your hands dirty for us,” she said.
Hugging her tighter, I pulled her down into the snow with me. We rolled around exchanging sweet, playful kisses and laughing. A few seconds later, Gabby jumped in with us and we swept her up to laugh and play.
“Are you happy?” I asked when we rolled over onto our backs and looked up at the blue winter sky.
“My heart has never been so full,” she said, then looked over at me. “Who would have thought I would find paradise in the arms of a cowboy?”
