  “No.”

I slapped Ashton’s face again, but there was no response.

“No, no, no, no, no,” I chanted as I shook him. “Ashton!” I yelled. “Talk to me!”

His head rolled to the side, and I set him back on the ground gently. Even though I didn’t need the proximity to hear, I placed my head on his chest and listened to his heart.

  But it was slow.

  And stuttering.

Like it might stop at any minute.

  “No. No. No!” I screamed.

  I didn’t think. I just acted.

I dug my head into his neck and sank my fangs in deep. Sucking with all my strength, I drained him in seconds before I pulled away. I bit into my wrist and held it against his mouth, but nothing happened.

  I pressed harder.

  “Come on, Ashton. Drink.”

  Nothing.

I pried his mouth open and let my blood drip onto his tongue.

  Still nothing.

I kept that wrist there as I bit into the other one and held it above his wounds. First the one in his chest, and then the one in his stomach. I let my blood pool in the bullet-holes and trickle down his throat as I prayed.

“Please, Ashton,” I whispered, tears making my voice thick. “Please don’t leave me. I just found you.”

I held him as I waited for my blood to work its magic. When his heart started to beat stronger, I knew it was working. I knew he’d be okay. I knew he’d survive.

I just didn’t know if he’d forgive me.

What happens when you wake up to find out your life is over?

Ashton’s been in a lot of sticky situations, but never one he couldn’t get himself out of—until he took the job working security for a beautiful vampire, and found himself on the wrong side of an organization hell-bent on capturing her. He willingly sacrificed his life for hers, but didn’t count on her saving him in return.

Millie swore she was done making vampires. But, when Ashton gets shot protecting her, she doesn’t think twice. She’ll figure out how to explain her actions to him later. All that matters is he’s alive.

But what happens when Ashton wakes up from the change and realizes his humanity is over? Can he accept this new life and forgive Millie for making the choice for him? Or will this tear their tentative new relationship apart?

  About the Author

Heather MacKinnon is a romance author living in North Carolina with her husband, adorable son, and two trouble making dogs. She grew up on Long Island and spent her young adult years in various states in New England. This led to her subsequent addiction to Dunkin’ Donuts lattes and her gratuitous use of the word “wicked”. After a lifetime of enjoying other people’s words, she decided to write down some of her own. You can get up-to-date information about Heather MacKinnon’s books at www.heathermackinnonauthor.com.
