Reviews are the most powerful tools in my arsenal when it comes to getting attention for my books. Much as I'd like to, I don't have the financial muscle of a big publishing house. I can't take out full page ads in the newspaper or put posters on the London Underground.

But I do have something much more powerful and effective than that, and it's something that those publishers would kill to get their hands on.

A committed and loyal bunch of readers.

Honest reviews of my books help bring them to the attention of other readers.

If you've enjoyed this book I would be very grateful if you could spend just five minutes leaving a review (it can be as short as you like) on the book’s Amazon page. You can jump right to the page by clicking on the link below.

My continued thanks, as always, to my tireless editor Lorna Ferguson. Her insight and feedback catches me whenever I don’t quite hit the mark. My thanks also to Holly C, who does an excellent job of pointing out when this Australian slips and makes his British characters sound less British. I’m getting a bit better at not saying “sidewalk”, I promise.

There are always new places to see and new things to do. But these experiences are so much better when you have a partner in your adventures. To Amber, my adventure buddy, I’m very grateful that we get to go on these adventures together.

  Author’s Note

This is not the end of the Hawthorn House series.

You learn something from every book you write, I’ve said before. From this one, I learned I work in threes. Three acts to a story, three books to a trilogy. As I wrote Immortal Make, I found I kept making callbacks to the first book, Ghost Electricity. It felt like the end of a trilogy.

I began writing long before I started reading the theory of writing. When I did begin studying the theory, I recognised much of the lessons on plot structure because I was already doing it. I’d picked it up from a lifetime of reading, TV shows and movies.

Immortal Make isn’t the end. It’s the midpoint. It’s here that the shape of the series’ overall arc starts to reveal itself. I was surprised by some of it. You know certain things going in as the writer, but even a planned story deviates from its outline. Rob, Julian, Fiona and Jessica had their own ideas about where they should go. I’ve listened when they told me, rather that tried to railroad them into something that ran against their character.

Places to which I’ve travelled have a way of ending up in my stories. So it is with Iceland. For a person raised in the tropical rainforests of Australia, with frequent trips into the dry interior, Iceland was an astounding experience. Rob’s wonder is my own. I feel I can never do it justice.

The story of the tenants of Hawthorn House has reached a turning point. Each character has made a decision, whether they understand it or not, on where they’re going. I hope you’ll continue to join them as the consequences of those decisions unfold.
