"Abel! I'm healthy as an ox. I need to be walking. No, listen to me!" But she found herself shouting at his broad retreating shoulders.
Suddenly, he stopped. "I insist that you listen to me, young lady. I said wait here."
She and Polly stood staring at each other, as he disappeared.
"This is why I haven't told him before now." Cicely stared after him, a look of exasperation on her face.
Polly's mischievous grin answered her. "Do I have permission to tell Mother—or—"
"Absolutely not. I want to tell her. Abel and I both." She was lifted off her feet, before she realized he had come back into the store, and looked back at the owner, who finally threw up his hands.
"Ahem. Once again. I am lost. Is it to be four yards? Or five?"
Abel paused at the door with her and looked back at him.
"Make it five." Then as he pulled the door open, he stared down at Cicely. His gaze moved to Polly, then back to his wife.
"No. Make it six," he said, throwing his head back and laughing in his deep melodious voice.
"It just might be twins!"
