“He’s no threat to us,” Scott said.

Drew released a heavy breath. “You don’t know how glad I am to hear you say that.” Only he wasn’t necessarily relieved. He knew what kind of legacy had been bred between the Esparza and Remington families. The Hatfields and McCoys had nothing on them. Their hatred ran deep. Their need for revenge was inspired by bloodshed, by the lives lost.

Manny slapped him on the back then brought him in for a hug. “You’re all clear, Remington. This thing with Esparza is over. It’s time to get on with your life.”

“That’s what I plan to do. So the two of you never said much about your new assignments. Where are you headed?”

“We’re just taking care of some unfinished business,” Scott replied. “I’ll be back here in a few weeks to relieve you of your duties.”

  “You will?”

“Don’t look so frantic, Remington. From what I understand you’re due an extended vacation to follow that unauthorized leave spanning thirty-six months.”

  They all laughed.

  “Take care, boys.”

  “You, too,” they chimed.

Minutes later, the limousine pulled away from the curb and Drew threw up his hand, waving good-bye to his friends and fellow operatives. When he returned to the club, it occurred to him. Manny had deliberately danced and didn’t provide details about his forthcoming mission.

He slowly walked around the bar and his fate struck him in the face. He was the one left behind. His friends were headed out on another mission. He was stuck at home.

That’s when he enjoyed a moment of clarity. He would soon embark on the journey of a lifetime. He and Suzy would soon become man and wife. He’d exerted himself as an operative. He’d faced adversities and challenges.

Now, it was time to reap the rewards and start a family with the woman he loved. Now, he was ready. He could finally go home.
