I’m keeping my baby. I’m keeping my baby.
Marion looked at Danielle and told her she was making a big mistake.
“I’ve lost my father and my mother because of this war. This child is the only family I have left, and I am not going to lose it. The Nazis have already taken enough away from me, they will take nothing more”, said Danielle, tears streaming down her face.
“Ok, it’s your decision. We only tried to help”, advised Marion. “But, keep it concealed. Don’t let them see the bump because they will cut it out of you. It’s what they do. It’s what they enjoy doing. Look what they have already done to you, they won’t think of inflicting more pain upon you. Goodnight.”
The other women soon fell asleep, tired after having worked outside in the yard all day long. With the exception of Clara, still nursing her broken nose, Danielle was the only one awake. She sat up all night, crying silently, constantly caressing her stomach.
Chapter Seventeen
Professor Lenard stepped outside of the office wrapped in a large overcoat and carrying his suitcase. He had a look around for any night guards. He saw none, until he had reached the exit to the cave where several were standing around on the roadside. He wasn’t going to be leaving by taking that route.
He looked up the mountain in the direction where Claude had been caught and decided that was his best chance. It carried risks, but, not as many as walking along the road, and not as many as staying, he was quickly beginning to learn.
He rushed towards the base of the mountain and disappeared behind some bushes.
“So, tell me. Did you find what you went to look for, your contact?” Garrow asked Nancy.
“No, they were gone, and judging by the state of the building where she lived, I can assume with confidence that the Gestapo have worked out that she is more than a normal civilian”, she replied.
“A somewhat waste of an effort then, it would seem”, said Garrow, trying his best to hide his irritation at the fact that he had sent men into harm’s way without results. “Does this change your plan to go to London?”
“Yes, Captain, it does. It means that I have to be there all the more urgently.”
“We’ve found a few SAS commandos and POWs who are also in need of getting there.
In total, about twenty men, five of whom will escort you, the remainder will make their own way back independently.”
“What about the Canadian, Nadeau, wasn’t it? What about him, you promised him a safe way back to the Allies.”
“If he is in good enough shape, he too can go”, agreed the captain.
Garrow handed over a small film canister to Nancy and told her that he needed her to get it back to London with the utmost urgency, explaining that the Nazis were exploring ancient Roman mines for reasons which were not yet clear. She agreed, promising that she would get them developed upon her arrival, and would ensure they got to the right person.
A captain stepped into the general’s office.
“General, I have received a report that the psychics have not been able to make contact down there. What are your orders?”
Lutze was staring at the blueprints of the mines laid out on the table. He gave some consideration to the question before replying, without looking up.
“This is very disappointing, Captain. Execute the gypsy women. Maybe that will help to motivate…give some incentive to people I send down there to help us in the future. And why has the professor not been brought back to me yet? Send out more search parties. Hunt him down. I want him back here right now, do you understand?”
The captain nodded, his body trembling. “Dismissed.”
The now shaken captain left, and General Lutze continued looking at the blueprints. A faint smile appeared on his face as he tapped his forefinger on a particular spot on the map, a spot where the professor had placed an X before his unauthorized departure.
Thank you very much for reading my books, your support is very much appreciated.
The reason I have chosen to make these into quick-reads is because they are the adapted novelette forms of the screenplays which have already been written. It is my intention to use the money raised from this series of short books to make my dream a reality and have the screenplays produced.
If you would like to see this happen, you can help! You already have this book, so please be kind enough to leave a review from your source. More reviews means better placement and more promotion, and that means more sales which means that we can see this on our screens in the not too distant future!
Join me on this journey of what will be at least 39 episodes. I am trying for more all the time because it is simply my passion!
Thank you once again, and best wishes to you all. Jason.
