Thank you to the immensely hard-working Randy Kiyan for getting this book into the right hands, and to Claire Abramowitz for passing it along—it never would have seen the light of day without either of you.

To my amazing book agent Peter Steinberg—your thoughtful notes and excellent salesmanship not only got this book sold, but launched my career.

To Rebecca Lucash, my first editor at Harper Voyager, for all of your insights that took this story to the next level. And to David Pomerico, Priyanka Krishnan, and the rest of the Harper Voyager team, for all your help with this series. It’s been such a pleasure working with all of you, and I’m excited we get to do two more of these together!

To Ari Levinson, whose thoughts and ideas permeate every page of this book. Thank you for helping me build this world, for your feedback on countless drafts, and for your support every single day throughout this process.

To everyone else who read early drafts: Ann Acacia Kim, Alex Smith, Amy Thurlow, Alex Spear, Alison Kane, Brad Riddell, Sue Amy, Cathy Hill, Laura Herb, Sarah Hawley, Linda Johnson Tarkoff . . . It is no easy feat to trudge through a rough draft by a first-time novelist, and your input was enormously valuable. And an additional thanks to the many friends who gave input earlier in the process, as I was developing the story and the world.

To Markus Plank, for advising me on neuroscience, helping to ground the sci-fi tech in some kind of reality. Apologies for anything I still messed up.

To Yuval Harari, who has no idea who I am, but whose Brief History of Humankind inspired quite a bit of my favorite dialogue.

To the incredibly talented Eva, who inspired me to write a novel in the first place.

And to all the rest of my friends, family, teachers, and mentors, for all of your support along the way. I am immensely lucky to have all of you in my life.
