The engagement party was like a dream coming true for them as they greeted their guests on an evening in early June, and when Alex arrived and held her close for a fatherly moment, Emma’s contentment was complete.

She had been round to his place on a few occasions to get to know him and it was always a time of fulfilment and thankfulness when she thought of how Glenn had brought him to her out of nowhere and into her life.

It seemed that Alex had been the bank manager of one of the biggest banks in Glenminster and Helena had been his secretary. They had fallen deeply in love with the knowledge that there had been no future for them to be together because Alex had been unable to leave his sick wife, and she, Emma, had been the result of wishing each other a passionate goodbye.

But a warm June night with love in the air and lots of nice food and wine to partake of in the company of friends was not the occasion for sad memories, and when Glenn asked Emma if she was happy, the answer was there in her eyes and the tender curve of her mouth, and as Lydia watched them she felt a rush of thankfulness in knowing that there was a happy ending for Emma’s hurts of long ago.

  EPILOGUE

CHRISTMAS HAD COME again and in the ancient church next to the practice the wedding march was being played as Emma walked slowly along the aisle in a dress of heavy cream brocade designed to keep out the cold, carrying a bouquet of roses of the same colour. She was holding onto the arm of her father, who was observing her with loving pride and joy as the solitaire diamond on her finger sparkled in the light of many candles.

All around them was the Yuletide smell of fresh green spruces and as Glenn stood waiting for her at the altar he sent up a silent prayer of thankfulness for the joy she had brought into his life and the lives of others, including that of his elderly best man, who had risked life and limb on their account.

Tonight he would keep the promise he had made to Emma at the side of the empty hayloft that day. There had been times over recent months when it had been a hard promise to keep, but tonight when they were alone Glenn would show her how much he loved her and always would.

And as Emma came to stand beside him, looking beautiful beyond telling, he felt Serena’s presence, as he sometimes did, close by and peaceful in the ether, and contentment filled his heart as he and Emma made the vows that would last a lifetime.

They were going to honeymoon in Italy in the beautiful house where they had stayed so briefly before the phone call from Glenn’s mother had brought them swiftly back home. But on this occasion they fully intended to enjoy the beauties of the coastline, now that they had all the time in the world to adore each other. And on their return to Glenminster there would be all the things that were precious in their lives waiting for them.

Such as their parents, Glenn’s house, which Emma had adored ever since she’d first seen it, and their all-consuming work at the practice amongst the sick and suffering, with their love for each other their strength in all things.
