Meeting: Vampire Hunter Saga Book 1 Page 17

by Sands, Charlene

"Thanks for warning me," I said dryly, gulping down the rest of the drink. Sure enough, as I did so, I began to feel drowsy. More than drowsy, actually. Very sleepy... Maybe Flora had understated the effects of her medicine...

My jaws stretched in a yawn, even though I tried to cover it with my hand. Through half-closed eyes, I saw a small smile appear on Zane's face. Did he look... affectionate? Man, I really was tired.

  Xxx.

Ssh, my child... Look at me...

  Don't run from sweet temptation.

  Ssh, my love, come softly,

  They won't see you.

  Don't say a word...

  Keep me here...

  Don't say a word.

The sweet voice sounded in my head as my consciousness slowly came back to me. It was a woman's voice, a woman's voice that I didn't understand. She was crooning her song, the tune haunting. My entire body was icy cold, just like the breath on my face.

Fingers just as cold as the breath pushed hair away from my face. I was a bit afraid to even open my eyes, to ruin the moment. So I just pretended to be asleep, trapped in my half-dream world.

When I was like this, my thoughts were honest with themselves. I liked the way that person was, so close to me. No, I shouldn't have liked it. But I did. Way too much.

Sighing, I let my lips curve into a smile. For a moment, the person stopped stroking my hair, unsure. He couldn't tell if I was sleeping or not. Finally, sighing, I opened my eyes.

  "Sorry."

Zane's voice was regretful, and he stood, backing away from me. Turning my head around, I realized that I was still stretched out on his sofa. A light blanket was draped over my body, one that hadn't been there before.

"You gave me a blanket?" I asked, voice thick with sleep.

"Yes," he admitted, an embarrassed look on his face. "Are you too hot, or something? I'll take it somewhere else, if you want-"

"No, I like it," I smiled, eyes moving around. "Where are Madison and Flora?"

"Upstairs, talking about what to do next," Zane answered reluctantly, standing near me.

"I end up being alone with you a lot, don't I?" I found myself commenting, that same sleepy smile on my face. My head felt like it was in the clouds.

"Did Flora add anything to your drink?" Zane questioned. "Because... I've been keeping an eye on you, and nothing seemed to be different—until now. Maybe you should go back to sleep."

"Someone was singing to me," I mumbled, eyelids drooping. "She was singing about..." Yawn. "She was singing about staying quiet. To keep her here. Not to run from... temptation."

At my words, Zane's eyes flew back to me, narrowing with suspicion. Now I was a little more awake.

"What? Do you recognize it, Zane?"

  "No," he muttered, looking away.

I was sure he was lying.
