Epilogue
Three days later
Cass was laid out on the couch, resting. She had been unconscious for twenty-four hours and then woken up in the hospital. They had to give her a blood transfusion or she could have died. She had come home late last night and Leeza had been catering to her ever since.
“Are you hungry?” Leeza asked.
“No, I’m fine, really.”
There was a knock on the door. Leeza went to answer it. Ari came in.
Cass looked at his face but couldn’t read his expression. “Did you do it?”
“Yes, West will not remember the demon, only that a fight broke out during a party at his dorm and someone broke the window in his room. The rest of his dorm mates were pretty drunk, so it didn’t take much to confuse their memories into those of a really bad brawl.”
“What about the rest of what I asked you to do?”
“I faded West’s memories of you into someone he dated briefly but nothing came of it.”
Leeza slammed a plate down on the coffee table. “I can’t believe you had Ari take memories of you from West. Messing with someone’s mind is a horrible thing to do.”
Cass looked at her clasped hands. “It’s to protect him. People aren't safe around me. I should probably move out…”
Leeza glared. “Don’t you dare move out. You made a commitment to live here with me and you’re going to keep your promise. I need to go study.” She stormed away to her bedroom and pointedly shut the door.
Cass reached over for the plate with the sandwich on it. “Thanks for taking care of that.”
“Tara called me.”
Cass froze just as she was about to bite into her sandwich. “Oh. What did she want?”
“She said that the contract was officially voided.”
“That’s a relief. You’re free.”
“She said that Abraham came through and brokered the void.”
“Good.”
“What did you do, Cass?”
“I don’t know what you mean.”
Ari crossed his arms over his chest. “You went to Abraham and made a deal with him to get him to break my engagement contract. That was a mistake.”
“He owed you that!”
“What did he ask for in return?”
“Nothing much. I’ll be working full-time at his office, and once a month I’ll sleep over at their home.”
“You can’t do that. He’s not someone you can trust.”
“He said the same thing about you.”
“So now you don’t trust me?”
“I didn’t say that.”
Ari looked hurt. “You need to end this deal with Abraham.”
“No, I won’t. You don’t have any more say over me than Raphael or Michael.”
“They would agree with me on this.”
“I’m going to work for Abraham and spend time getting to know him and my grandmother better. There’s nothing else you can say to convince me otherwise.”
“Damn it! I can’t reason with you right now.” He turned to leave her there, slamming the door behind him.
Ari hadn’t even talked about their night of making love. Was it over between them already? She felt pulled in so many directions. One thing was clear: she had to keep herself at a distance from those she cared about, because it could put them in danger. She never wanted to risk anyone else she cared about getting hurt like West did. She was determined to learn to how to fight these demons on her own and become the demon hunter she was prophesied to be. It was time to finally claim her birthright.
