“You are wise beyond your years, my dear,” replied Philip. “I, for one, do not intend to let past mistakes spoil the future. I have been granted another chance to enjoy life with my two sisters and this time I will get it right.”
Anna agreed, and added, “Don’t forget your promise to meet your new brother and his family in Canada, Philip. He will help me tell you what your father was really like. Your new life is just beginning, and I know how exciting that can be!”
Caroline thought of Jay’s description of how Anna’s life had changed when she found her missing family member and bought the farm house in Scotland.
I have a future ahead of me too, she decided. All this stuff about new beginnings is giving me a lot to think about. I’ll contact Jay later and bring him up to date. He might have some ideas that will push me in a new direction.
She stepped back from the chatter of her blended family and took a breath of the scented air.
The summer had been full of surprises and challenges. The future was unknown, but that feeling of accomplishment she had experienced on the top of a hill in the Lake District, returned to inspire her.
“There will always be more mountains to climb,” she acknowledged to herself, “and I plan to put those leather boots to good use, one way or another.”
Her mobile phone jangled urgently and Caroline moved away along the path to talk to Janine.
