“Come here,” he said. Jenn pretended to put up a fight, but in the end she let him get close and kiss her.

The cold night air pressed against her cheeks. She felt happy in a way she hadn’t in a long time. She was alive. She had Danny to thank for that. Up until tonight, the last person she had been with had been Max, and she didn’t dwell on their time together if she could help it. Whenever she found herself thinking back about the times she and Max were together, no matter how fun or exciting it had been at the time, they were now tainted with the knowledge that Max was a cheater. Jenn couldn’t help but question and doubt whether the feeling of connection with Max she had had was all a lie.

There were no doubts with Danny, thought. For now she put thoughts of what the future would bring and what exactly she and Danny were to each other. Friends? More? Or was what happened a one-time thing? Whatever the answer was, Jenn knew that she felt that kind of intense connection that made everything so vivid with Danny. There was no denying that.

She had been the one to say that she had to get home. She wasn’t ready to spend the night with someone yet. Danny didn’t put up a fight or try to change her mind. He walked her to the door and opened it for her. In some ways, he was the perfect gentleman.

But he didn’t kiss her when she left, and part of Jenn felt disappointed that he didn’t.

Am I reading too much into that?

Maybe that was the sign that it was just a one-time thing. They had both been through a life and death situation, after all. Wasn’t it natural to let off some steam? Maybe this was just a thing they needed to get out of their systems after coming a heartbeat away from something truly awful?

Something nagged at Jenn. It was a tiny thought that grew with each step she took. Finally she couldn’t ignore it any longer.

Do I want this to be a one-time thing?

  Jenn stopped in her tracks.

“I don’t know,” she said aloud.
