“Oh, you’re going to get it all, baby. So much so that you’ll be begging for more.” I connected again, causing her to cry out and moan at the same time. The wetness that met my finger as I plunged it back into her pussy was unbelievable. My arm wrapped around her waist, lifting until she couldn’t touch the floor. Faster, I thrust, until she was screaming and writhing in my hold.
“Devlin.”
“Are you supposed to call me that?”
“Devlin.”
My eyes widened in disbelief. “I’m going to repeat that. Is that what you’re supposed to call me?”
Shaking had her voice echoing and I tried to process what was happening.
“Devlin!”
My eyes flew open, my heart racing as I reached over and searched or the bedside lamp. Light blinded me as I squinted to make out Victoria, sitting up.
“What?” The grogginess in my voice had my hand running down my face. My cock ached and I knew it was because of how long it had been since Victoria and I had made love. Hell…was it two weeks now? It wasn’t a long time in reality, but from us going at it at least once, if not twice a day…the dry spell was kicking my ass.
“Devlin.” She waved her hand in front of my face as I blinked, confused. My dream was pulling me back under and I fought to get a grip on the here and now.
“Wait.” I pushed to sit up and froze. “I’m…wet.” I threw back the covers, just as realization dawned.
“That’s what I was trying to tell you. My water broke. I’m not sure exactly when. The contractions woke me up.”
I was out of the bed before she finished talking. Fear and excitement collided, but I knew fear was winning. We’d been here before, not two weeks ago. But what we’d thought was labor had been a false alarm—contractions that had stopped after only a few hours. Now that I knew there was no going back, I fought to remain clear-headed.
“Let me get dressed and I’ll get you a clean gown. Then I’ll wake your mom up and let her know we’re headed out.”
“Just get dressed and inform my mom. I’ll take care of myself.”
Suddenly, I felt torn. I knew she could walk, but I didn’t really want to leave her unattended. As I slipped on a pair of jeans and a T-shirt, I took in her every move. The walk to the dresser was slow as she held to her stomach. While she put on a clean pair of panties, I grabbed one of her dresses from the closet and brought it over to her. She didn’t get her wet nightgown off before she was doubled over. My hands were immediately under her arms as I positioned myself behind her in case she fell.
“Devlin.” The call was through clenched teeth, signaling to me that she was feeling more pain than she wanted to show.
“How long have you been in labor?”
More time went by until she stood, letting her gown fall to the floor. “I was having contractions before bed, but I figured they’d stall out in my sleep. I guess I was wrong.”
Immediately, my eyes went to the clock. “It’s three A.M.! You passed out around eight.”
“Yeah, well, labor can last a long time.”
“Or it can go quickly.” Dammit. I really, really didn’t feel like having to deliver my son. Not when it put Victoria’s life on the line. Shit, we had to go! “Here, put this on.”
Her arms lifted and I slid the dress over. Walking her to the couch in the living area, I eased her to sit down. “I’m going to wake up your mom. Do. Not. Move.” Each word was clipped and I didn’t stick around to see if she would listen. I shot down the hall, easing the nursery room door open. The bed in there had quickly became Sophia’s in the last few weeks and having her was the biggest blessing I could have hoped for.
“Sophia.” I nudged her shoulder and she woke up on contact. “Victoria’s water broke. Will you listen for Ava?”
“You know I will. What are you waiting for? Get going.” She smiled, teasingly, and I couldn’t help but place a kiss on her cheek as I raced from the room. Victoria was exactly where I left her. I grabbed the keys, coming to her side as she rose and began heading for the door. Two steps outside and she was easing to a stop.
“Wait, wait.” Her hand clutched to my arm while I stood there completely dumbfounded. My hand rubbed along her back as I tried to calculate how long it’d been since her last one. I angled my watch for the porch light. 3:09. Mine wasn’t set to the one in the room, but if I recalled, it had been 3:03 when I had glanced over. Six minutes apart? Less. Fuck. I’d know on the next one.
Deep breathing eventually stopped and she stood, heading slowly for the SUV.
“Damn. Devlin, we need a towel or something for me to sit on.”
“Do you think I give a shit about the seats? Anyway, they’re leather.”
When she didn’t move, I clenched my jaw. “Fine. At least sit down long enough for me to get one.”
My command was followed by her resting against the frame of the car, level with the bottom of the floorboard
“Stubborn,” I gritted out as I sprinted back to the door. The towel was in my hand in record time and I was fitting it across the seat before doubling it over upon her request. My adrenaline was soaring with the speed of a locomotive and everything around me was moving along at a snail’s pace. By the time Victoria got in the seat, I was sure she’d be having another contraction. I wasn’t far off. The moment I pulled out of the driveway and put it in drive, a cry burst from her lips.
“Oh…fuck.” Her hand shot out to the dashboard while her other cradled her stomach.
“Time. Right.” I brought the watch up. 3:12. The tires squealed as I stomped down on the gas. “Three minutes. That can’t be right. They said they’d start out at fifteen!” My voice roared only to be met with Victoria’s.
“Are you trying to make me have this baby right here? Slow down!”
Her anger doused mine instantly. I reached for her hand, decreasing my speed as I rounded the corner and made it onto the main road that would lead us to the hospital.
“I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to yell. Or…to jerk you around like that. I’m just nervous. Why are they three minutes apart already?”
Victoria leaned back in the chair, closing her eyes. “The water breaks when the labor progresses, Devlin. If it started at nine, it’s definitely getting further along.”
I gripped the steering wheel with everything I had. “How far along would you say you are?”
Nothing. Her eyes didn’t even open.
“Kitten.”
“Not that much longer.” Her lids snapped open. “That doesn’t mean drive like a bat out of hell. I still have a good two to three hours, I think.”
Two to three. Okay, I could work with that. Two to three hours sure as hell beat two to three minutes.
“Maybe we should stop at a fast food place and get you something to eat.”
I laughed, not able to help it. “I don’t think so.”
“You sure? It might take a lot longer than we think.”
The baby show we’d watched flashed before me. “Nope. I’m not eating a bite until after Blaise is here. If that’s not for another twenty-four hours, so be it.”
“Oh, it won’t be that long.” Her features tightened as she squeezed her eyes shut. I jerked my arm back up.
“Two fucking minutes. Two? Victoria, I think you might be having this baby a lot sooner than what you said.”
Going the speed limit wasn’t an option. Not one I could afford, anyway. I hit the hazard lights and pushed down on the accelerator even more. Vehicles were scarce, which I was thankful for, but the traffic lights quickly showed me that we might a problem. I slowed, coming to a stop, just as Victoria curled in to her stomach again. Two minutes on the dot.
“Breathe,” I said calmly, leaning over to brush back her hair. “We’re not that far away. We’ll be there shortly.”
For all the panic I felt, I was able to hide it from my voice. Control was seeping back in. The more I saw that Victoria was in pain, the clearer my head began to get. Nails sunk into my wrist as
she pulled my arm into her chest and held my hand to her face. To say I was at an awkward angle was an understatement. I was practically arched over the console, but I didn’t dare move while she breathed through the contraction. The light turned green and I eased forward, barely pushing on the gas while I steered.
“Fuck.” Her head shook, but her eyes remained squeezed shut.
“Remember the classes. Use your breathing. Try to relax your body.”
The grip loosened a little and her eyes appeared heavy as she opened them. “I will on the next one. That one was pretty bad. Devlin…” she closed her eyes again, “I’m glad you’re here. I truly am sorry about not telling you about Ava.”
“Shh.” I stroked her face, leaning over to give her a quick kiss on the cheek before I moved back in my chair. “That’s the past. We’re not talking about that anymore. It happened and I’m here now. That’s all that matters.”
The hospital lights came into view and I moved over into the far lane. The scream that followed had my blood turning cold. Victoria jerked, practically crawling up the seat to tuck her legs underneath her.
“Almost there.”
It felt like I couldn’t go fast enough and like I was pulling in front of the emergency room doors all at the same time. I slammed the SUV into park and raced around, yelling at one of the men at the doors to get someone.
“Come on, kitten. Let’s get you inside.” I reached over, unbuckling her. Victoria didn’t move as she clung to the headrest, breathing deeply. Not being able to see her face was the worst. It was hard for me to read her with her turned into the seat. “Hurry!” My voice boomed at the two nurses who ran out with a wheelchair.
“What do we have?” One came forward as I babbled, “Woke up to her water already broken. No clue when it happened.” I lifted my watch, “twenty or so minutes ago. The contractions were about two minutes apart, but the last one was almost right on top of the other.”
The woman nodded, reaching for Victoria’s shoulder. “Ma’am I need you to turn around and let me help you into the chair. We need to get you inside.”
Slowly, she moved, until they had her sitting down.
“This is going way too fast.” She shook her head. “The pressure is pretty intense. I need to get up there. I don’t have much longer.”
“Sir, if you can go park your car. We’re going to take her back.”
Numbly, I walked around, watching as they wheeled her inside. I was torn. Almost everything in me said, fuck it, let them tow the damn thing. The rational part told me to get my ass moving and park the bitch so I could get back to her side. It won, leading me to the driver’s seat and deep into the parking lot. The horn sounded as I locked it behind me and rushed back to the double doors. Upon entrance, I was met with a room full of random elderly people and a few couples.
“Hi, my wife was just brought in. She’s in labor.”
“Right. I believe they took her straight to labor and delivery. I’m going to need you to fill out a few papers.”
My mouth parted. “Are you joking? I said my wife is about to have a baby.”
“This will only take a few minutes.” A clipboard was pushed under the glass and I flipped through the stack, shaking my head.
“Okay, here’s how this is going to work.” I took out my wallet. “My license. My credit card.” I scribbled down Victoria’s name on the top, followed by her date of birth. “That’s her information. She’s already in the system, just look her up. I’m sorry, but I’ve missed one birth, I’m not missing another. If you want me to fill anything out, you can send it to the room, but I can’t sit here and do it right now.”
I spun on my heel, heading for the hall that held the elevator. The calls behind me died away as I broke into a jog and slid to a stop outside the closed doors. I pushed the button and waited for what felt like an eternity. The ride up wasn’t any shorter.
As the nursery blurred by, I barely made it through the double doors of labor and delivery that were in the process of closing.
“Victoria Black.” Her name barely left my mouth when screams drew me further away from the nurse’s station and deeper into the hall. I started running again, feeling true panic begin to register. It wasn’t until the seventh door that I came to a jolting stop. I pushed it open, knowing it was her voice.
“Devlin!” Her arm outreached while I took in the nurses and the doctor who was sitting in front of her. The stirrups were out and they were already placing her legs on them. The room tilted for the briefest moment before I had to force myself to breathe. This was it. The moment I’d been waiting for since I found out she was pregnant.
“Devlin.”
The call had me moving forward until I was at her side. The doctor’s hand went under the sheet covering her legs as he glanced up, smiling.
“The baby’s head is right there. Now that Dad’s here, on your next contraction, I want you to push.”
Victoria grabbed my hand, nodding to him. “I’m ready.”
“Already? You’re sure?” I knew my question sounded ridiculous, but I couldn’t believe I’d been having an amazing dream less than an hour ago and now, here we were, about to have a baby.
“Yeah. I have to push. Just keep breathing, Devlin. It’ll be okay.”
Was she giving me advice? I was the one supposed to be trying to comfort her. “I’m doing fine. I’m just worried about you.”
The pressure crushing my hand was met with a stare that rooted my feet to the floor. There was nothing weak about the woman in front of me. Her face was flushed and sweat was beginning to dampen her hair in the front, but her eyes somehow gave me strength.
“No worrying. I’m fine. Let’s just focus on getting Blaise here.”
Before I could respond, Victoria leaned forward. Orders were being thrown around mixed with words of encouragement and counting. I took in everything while I rested my palm a few inches below where the hospital gown was tied.
Four rounds of pushing turned into six, then eight, each with her screaming louder. Sweat was soaking my shirt and if anyone looked like they’d gone through hell, it’d be a hard call between the two of us.
“There we go. Push just like that.” The doctor shifted, his arms moving as he leaned more to the left. “Mr. Black, you’re going to want to watch this.”
Fear spiked. I’d seen those baby shows enough times to know what I was going to somewhat be faced with and each one had gotten easier. Now that I was here, I wasn’t about to pass out or shy away. This was my son. And that had me moving forward without hesitation.
Dark hair had my hand coming to my mouth. I’d known he’d have it, but seeing him in person was so surreal that I couldn’t stop the tears from clouding my eyes. It was just like the shows. Victoria screamed and within seconds, he was here, right in front of me, crying while they cleaned him and cleared out his airways. Even when I cut the cord, his tiny sounds tugged at my heart.
My arms went around Victoria and I couldn’t stop the emotion that had my tough exterior collapsing down around me. The instantaneous love was so indescribable that it left me repetitive as I held her.
“Thank you.” They were the only words I seemed to be able to say and I repeated it a good three times. But nothing amounted to the degree of joy that I was feeling. Not words, nor actions. I’d been blessed and the knowledge of that sunk all the way down into my bones. So many bad things happened to people. Victoria and I could have lost Blaise at the beginning. Something could have gone wrong in her pregnancy. She could have never given me a second chance and maybe I would have missed his birth. There were too many possibilities and yet, I’d been given the opportunity to witness the most amazing sight a person could see. My wife was healthy as was my child. Life didn’t get better than that.
The nurse eased Blaise into Victoria’s arms and I had to wipe the tears that kept escaping. We’d made him. The two of us. From Victoria’s lips, right down to my face…it was like viewing Ava’s baby pictures all over again.
<
br /> “He looks like you.” She smiled up at me and I laughed as I lowered to get a closer look. “Here, give me your phone,” she said softly. “I want you to hold him. Jill made me promise to send her a picture.”
I placed the phone on the bed as I reached down to cradle my son. Bright blue eyes opened and connected with mine. I barely even heard the sound of the camera. Just like with Ava, I felt the pull. The one that instinctively told me what was mine. My heart pounded against my chest, so full of love that I knew I’d just reached a whole new level with not only being a father, but a husband as well.
When I’d been hit with baby fever, I never would have guessed that it would have led me to this moment. To Victoria, Ava, and Blaise. I went from being completely alone, to having my deepest, most sought after wish. And not just of a baby or a wife. One wouldn’t have made me as happy as the combination I was blessed with. Two healthy, beautiful children. A wife I cherished and loved. A true sub who was perfect for the Dom in me. Every aspect of my life was met and thriving, and it all added up to the one thing I’d longed for the most—my definition of a perfect life. Family.
