I lay there wondering if he took offense to the suggestion that I made a few weeks ago.

“Dad” I said, somewhat exasperated at the lack of attention he gives me and my mother “Why don’t you just sleep at the office?”

Mom thought that was highly rude of me, but I was in one of those moods that I inevitably fall into when my period is about to start.

As I continued to lay in bed, I found myself wondering if David would ever turn out like my father, but then my brain quickly responded with the thought ‘No, we’ll be happily married’.

  ***

It was 1:45pm, and I was ready to meet David. I’d spent hours thinking about what I would wear, and I chose an outfit that I thought made me look nice, but not too desperate. You don’t want a guy to think you really want a date because you haven’t had one in a long time (Even if you hadn’t!).

I wore a t-shirt that clung to my skin just a little bit tightly, but not too much. It had the name of an ancient band written on the front, and I’d only worn it a few times. I wanted to look casual, but grown up, and the dark jeans I wore were only a little scruffy, but they still looked good.

I opted to wear my favorite tennis shoes that were really comfortable, but new enough to still be quite clean. Like I said, I didn’t want to dress like I was desperate, but I wanted to look nice.

I stood by the window at the top of the stairs that looked out over the front of our house. This way, I would see David leave his house, and that meant I had time to run downstairs, and get to the door before Mom did.

Mom just so happened to be working a half day, she claimed she’d already booked it off, but I was convinced she wanted to see me go on a date with the good looking boy next-door-but-one.

Just after 2 o’clock I spotted David, he’d left his house, hands in his pockets, wearing a pair of tight black jeans, black and white sneakers, and a dark t-shirt with a sport-related logo on the front. His leather jacket hung off his shoulders quite nicely, and the sleeves were just a little too long for his arms.

I realized I was staring at him, so I quickly averted my gaze, and walked quickly down the stairs.

“Have a nice time!” shouted Mom.

“Thanks” I mumbled, trying not to sound too excited (Even though my insides were doing cartwheels).

I stood on the top step and waited for David to ring the doorbell. When I heard the chiming, I counted to 5 under my breath and walked to the door.

My hands were shaking as I opened the door, because the guy on the other side was waiting for me, and I’d already started to melt.

I don’t really remember much about what was said on the way to the coffee shop, but I do remember trying to make conversation, without appearing too shy (In case it would put him off), or too enthusiastic (Also in case it would put him off).

When we got to the coffee shop, which was a 5 minute walk from my street, David opened the door for me like a true gentleman. As he was about to move his hand away from the door, I briefly and accidentally touched it with mine, and although I felt pretty shy, I also felt something else, something similar to the way I felt in the vampire dream.

Chapter 3 – His Gentle Touch

David was a true gentleman, he led me to a couple of seats by a window, and let me sit down first. As he balanced the tray of drinks and snacks (Milkshakes and vegetable chips), he smiled at me gently, and I bravely smiled back, and sat upright in my chair.

We talked about each other, our families, our job hopes, our hobbies and anything else we could think of. The words seemed to fall out of our mouths naturally; being with David felt natural and comfortable, and this made me want to spend even more time with him.

Like me, David was an only child, he’d moved with his family from the city to a relatively quiet suburban area, and was enjoying his fresh start. He was looking to work in finance, and hoped to follow in his father’s footsteps and work in the family firm.

I was truthful about when we talked about what I wanted to do with my life. I told him

“I haven’t decided yet, I know we’re supposed to come up with plans for the future, work out what we want to do an’ all, but I’ve not decided”

This was the truth, you’re pressurized into deciding what courses you want to take, and what direction your future is going to go in, but I just didn’t know, and I still don’t.

After what seemed like a few minutes of talking, we realized we’d been hogging the seats for over 2 hours, without ordering any more drinks. The coffee shop was getting busier as people started to come in for an afternoon coffee, so we decided to make tracks.

“Where would you like to go?” asked David, with a twinkle in his eye.

“Er, I’m not sure, what do you have in mind?” I replied, still a little scared.

“How about a walk somewhere so we can talk a bit more, and enjoy some fresh air?”

I thought that was a great idea, and there was only one place I had in mind.

  ***

A few minutes later we were there, we were walking along The White Lays as the sea breeze gently blew. The sun wasn’t so high in the sky any more, and there was a real feeling in the air that it would soon rain.

We walked along the cliff tops admiring the view and waiting patiently for each other to make the first move. I so wanted David to kiss me, but I was afraid that I had misread any signs he’d given me.

Up until then, we had only exchanged glances and smiles, but looking back, you could see we both wanted to kiss each other.

As we walked along the cliff edge, we came across a bench that I occasionally sat on. It was here where we sat, and it was here where we first held hands.

I melted at David’s touch, and for the first time in my life, I had the feeling that everything was going to be ok.

  ***

We sat there holding each other’s hands, just waiting for one of us to be even braver, and without realizing, I was the one to make the first move. I leaned over to David as he smiled at me for laughing at 2 birds fighting over some bread. I kissed him ever so gently as I was incredibly nervous, but I realized I didn’t have to be.

David responded, his lips moved with mine, and I melted once again at his touch, and at the taste of his lips. The kiss became more passionate as the sun began to slowly make its way slowly toward the horizon. I grabbed his hand and placed in on one of my breasts and he caressed it ever so gently.

As heat seemed to travel through my body, my vagina responded, but David held back, and didn’t ask for sex even though there was an obvious swelling in his pants.

“Not yet” he whispered, “We need to be sure it’s right”.

As you can imagine, this just made me want David even more, and part of me thought he was doing it on purpose. Some guys know that making a woman wait means they are almost desperate for sex when the time comes, but David wasn’t one of those guys.

As we gathered ourselves together, and checked to make sure no-one had been watching us, we headed home, hand in hand, with smiles on our faces. Agreeing to meet 2 days later, we said our goodbye’s once we reached my front door, and with a soft smooth kiss, David made his way home.

  ***

That night I lay in bed thinking of David, and what I wanted him to do to me. I began to touch my breasts and slip my hand even further beneath the sheets as I imagined what a night with him would be like.

As it started to get really dark outside, I realized I hadn’t eaten, so I went downstairs, got a TV dinner out of the freezer (This one was lasagna, apparently), and stood and sighed happily as I waited for the meal to ‘Ping’ in the microwave.

The next morning I felt a little shy about going down to breakfast. I’d managed to avoid seeing Mom the night before as I’d heard her talking on the phone when I got home. I spent much of the evening in my room reading and thinking about the date I had with David.

When I reached the kitchen, I found Mom sitting at the table, her eyes red from crying, and her wedding band in the pal
m of her hand.

“Sophie...” she whispered when she saw me

  “Mom? What’s wrong?” I asked

Never to be one to beat around the bush, Mom told me straight.

“Your father has been cheating on me with that disgusting colleague of his”

“What?” I said, not really believing what I’d heard.

“It’s been going on for 6 months, and now he’s decided to shack up with her, Stacy the 12 year old”

  “Twelve?” I replied?

“Well, she’s not exactly 12, she behaves like a child”

I hugged mom as she cried some more, and without interrupting, I let her tell me how she was feeling.

“23 years we’ve been married! 23 bloody years! I’ve cooked, cleaned the home, picked up his laundry and even told him if he wanted to go on vacation with his friends, he could”

I didn’t want to believe that what my mom was saying was true, but if I’m honest, it didn’t surprise me. Dad hadn’t been around very much, he wasn’t very talkative, and he didn’t seem to want to be at home. I guess I’d already considered that he might be having an affair, but I also thought he might just be a workaholic who loved his job more than his family.

Even though I half expected this, it still broke my heart. In some ways, my mom’s world began to fall apart as everything in her life began to change.

Soon after, Mom and Dad officially separated, and it was then that Mom broke the news to me

“We have to move, we cannot afford to live here anymore, as your father is refusing to pay the mortgage”

With the prospect of moving looming ahead, it felt as if my world was falling apart. Not only had Dad betrayed my Mom, and me, but he’d really stuck the knife in deep by refusing to pay the mortgage.

I was furious, I was upset, I was hurt, and I felt alone. I wasn’t in the right mindset to go on the next date with David, as I felt so lost that I locked myself in my room, and refused to take calls from my Dad.

  I sent David a text:

My dad has left my mom, she’s not 2 gr8 right now.

  I nd 2 b here 4 her, so I’m sorry I cannot meet with u.

Hope we can get 2gethr again soon.

  Miss u. Sophs. xxxxx

Shortly after, there was a knock at the door, mom answered, and I heard a familiar voice. I instantly knew who it was, it was David and he’d come to the rescue.

Chapter 4 – Worth the wait

Three months later, I sat with mom in the kitchen in our new home. The kitchen and the rest of the house were slightly smaller than our old one, but we managed ok.

Now there were only 2 of us living under the same roof, there was less clutter, there were smaller piles of laundry, and there wasn’t the smell of dad’s cologne to contend with each time we went into the bathroom.

Even though we lived 10 minutes away from each other, David and I spent time together on a regular basis. We’d grown very fond of each other, and Mom said she hadn’t seen me look that happy in a long time.

One day while mom was at work, David came over, we cooked a meal together (Spaghetti and meatballs in case you’re wondering) and he was looking more handsome than ever. Sitting at the kitchen table, and talking while we ate, I realized that I loved him. Some people don’t know if they are in love, but I think you know if you are.

If you’re in love with someone, you just know, if you’re not sure that you’re in love with someone, it means you’re not. This love that I felt for David had seemed to creep up, and without noticing, it bloomed like a flower, and seemed to envelop me.

After we’d eaten, we made our way to my room so we could listen to an album David had just bought. As a slow song came on, he invited me to dance, I obliged, and we stood up off the bed, wrapped our arms around each other and danced.

As the music played, he started to kiss me, and I kissed him back. His lips always felt so soft, and I always melted when I felt them next to mine. Before we knew it, the next song was playing, and I was holding my body against his. I felt his erection against my leg, and I longed for him to be inside me.

“Only if you’re sure” David whispered, as I unbuttoned his pants.

“I am sure, I love you, and I want you inside me”.

David gently walked me to my bed, and I slowly took off my top

“Do you really want to do this?” he asked

“Yes” I replied, and grabbed the back of his neck, pushing my lips against his.

We kissed passionately once more, before undressing and slipping under the covers. As gently as he could, David pushed himself inside me

  “Are you ok?” he asked

“I am” I said with a smile, and he pushed his hips forward, while I held his butt, and pulled him further into me.

  ***

We lay there in each other’s arms , endorphin levels high, with smiles on our faces and the feeling that everything was going to be ok, even if life threw difficult times at us.

We waited 4 months before we had sex, and although this may seem a long time to some, I know we did the right thing. It was important to both of us that we waited until we were sure, and as soon as I knew I loved David, I knew I was ready to have sex with him, and it was worth the wait.

We were only young when we got together, and although we may have been naïve, we knew what we wanted.

Through-out my parents’ divorce, my dad’s marriage to Stacy, ‘The 12 year old’ as Mom calls her (She’s actually 35, but really does behave like she’s 12), and through-out my time at college, David was there. He was my rock when times were tough, and he was my clown when I needed cheering up.

We slowly but surely became inseparable, and a few years later we moved in together.

I remember taking a walk with David along The White Lays, not long after we got the keys to our new apartment.

“It’s our time now” he whispered, and a tear of joy fell down my cheek. He kissed it gently and squeezed my hand a little tighter as we stood together, looking out to the sea, contemplating our future together, and wondering what joyous things it would bring.

Dear reader, five years later, we’re still together, we’re making plans for our wedding and I’m so happy. The boy-next-door-but-one turned out to be the man I’d wake up next to each morning, watch as he put on his smart work suit, while I changed into my uniform so I could work a few hours in the coffee shop where we had our first date.

Later today, we’re going to choose our wedding bands, and write a list of who we’d like to invite to the ceremony, perhaps dear reader, you would like to join us on our happy day?

  Sophie.
