Full name: Prani Divya Patel
Nickname: Pran, Twisty
Age: 13
Height: 150 cm
Family: Mum (Radha), Dad, Nani and older sister, Niya
School: Marrang Public
Hobbies: Prani started playing netball because her best friend, Maddy, suggested it. They learnt how to play when they joined the NetSetGO program when they were only five years old. Maddy likes to follow the Australian netball team, but Prani just loves to play with her friends in the Marrang Gems team. She would happily run, jump and throw the ball all day long. She is learning to accept set plays in games but likes it best when she can go with the flow. In her spare time Prani loves making playlists on her iPod and coming up with crazy dance moves. She also enjoys helping her grandmother (who she calls Nani) cook – well, mostly, Prani likes eating whatever her Nani cooks! Her Nani sometimes mixes up the names of Prani’s friends or the names of other things, which makes Prani laugh. Prani hopes to one day have a three-twisty game!
Netball club: Marrang Netball Club
Netball team: Marrang Gems, the Marrang Netball Club Under 13s team
Netball coach: Janet
Training day: Wednesday
Netball uniform: Royal blue netball dress with white side panels where ‘Marrang’ is written in pink. Prani normally wears earrings and lots of bangles but she has to take these off for matches.
Favourite netball position: All of them!
Netball idol: Prani admires her Gems teammates and her coach, Janet.
Best netball moment: Doing the Twist and Flick in the tournament game against the Harrington A team. This move saved the ball from going out and gave the Gems the goal they needed to win.
Netball ambition: To play for the Marrang Gems forever, playing a different position each game.
Twist and Flick
For this drill, you’ll need a netball and three players. Set yourself up in a line with the two outside players facing each other and the player in the middle facing the person holding the ball.
1. The player with the ball throws a high pass to the person in the middle.
2. The receiver jumps to catch the ball.
3. The receiver twists their body in midair.
4. The receiver then lands facing the other player.
5. As soon as the receiver lands they quickly flick the ball to the other player.
6. Repeat in the opposite direction and then swap positions so everyone has a turn in the middle.
HOT TIP
Start twisting in the air as soon as your hands touch the ball and in true Prani style you might even be able to pass the ball before you land!
Passing by Numbers
For this drill, you’ll need a netball and two players. Stand facing each other about three metres apart.
1. Give each type of pass a number. For example:
Down low to the left – 1
Down low to the right – 2
Shoulder height left – 3
Shoulder height right – 4
Chest pass – 5
2. Call a number as you pass.
3. Pass the ball back and forth with your partner.
4. Start slowly at first and pass in number order. As you get more confident, speed up and mix up the order of the passes.
HOT TIP
You can do this drill on your own if you throw the ball at a wall.
Crazy Circle Run
This drill is great to do with your whole team. It will help you to practise finding the right person to pass the ball to during a busy game and become more aware of what your teammates are doing.
1. Grab your teammates and start jogging in a wide circle.
2. Once everyone is in step with each other, add a netball in and keep moving as you throw it between your teammates in the circle, but no stepping!
3. As you find your rhythm, start moving faster and passing quicker.
HOT TIP
To make this drill more difficult, allocate each player only one person in the circle who they can pass to!
