“Well, there seems to be a bit of trouble down at N.C. State. A few of the local homeless have gone missing, and now students are disappearing. We’ve got some long-range scans on something there, but so far, none of our agents in the area have been able to turn up a thing. Whatever it is, it’s not your ordinary paranormal. It’s very powerful and cagey. You’ll want to be on your toes for this one. Who knows — maybe you’ll make a friend or two while you’re down there.”
“Please be serious, Grandfather. You have no information on what it might be?”
“No, none at all. Like I said, there’s something strange going on down there. Take your time, report in regularly, and do not bite off more than you can chew. You’ve been getting reckless again. You know arrogance will get you killed. Call for support instead of trying to do everything yourself.”
“I’m sure I can easily handle whatever is causing trouble at the college,” she said, turning to leave.
“Jessica?”
“Yes?”
“Please be careful.”
“I’m always careful, Grandfather. I’ve yet to meet a supernatural threat I couldn’t defeat.”
Bilford straightened his paper and leaned back in his chair as Jessica turned to walk away. “There’s always a first time…” he muttered.
