  CHAPTER 1

Today was going to be a good day, she thought. For the first time in a while, her husband would be away campaigning and she was grateful for the chance to not have to accompany him.. She loved her husband, of course, but she did not realize how much work she would need to do as a candidate’s wife.

Vivian sat up in bed and looked out the window of their master bedroom. The sun was shining through the trees and was hitting the pool in such a way that she knew she was going to want to take a dip in it later.

Sadly, today wasn’t going to be all fun and games. There was much to do around the house that she had been neglecting, but she chalked it up to being a labor of love. Her mother always taught her that it was the duty of the wife to maintain the house and that if it fell into disarray then her marriage would soon follow.

Vivian never put much stock into what her mother said, especially when it came to a wife’s duty. However, she could not deny that her life became exactly what her parents wanted from her: to be the wife of an elected official who had the potential to one day be president. She remembered the days she used to scoff at those ideas, but, as her mother explained to her, that was a phase.

Vivian got out of bed and stretched widely to shake off the aches of the previous night. They had to attend a fundraising party to help support her husband’s campaign and she had to make sure to dance with every potential donor. Her husband, Alex, explained to her that she was his secret weapon when it came to obtaining money from donors. While it bothered her slightly to think he was using her body for money, she still found it somewhat flattering that her husband found her so desirable.

Vivian looked at herself in the mirror and smirked knowing that even without make-up she was still quite beautiful. She thought to herself that she must have looked like the very picture of what a Republican’s wife should look like. Blonde hair, blue eyes, full lips, ample breasts and a body that was toned, but very well fed. Too many times her friends would ask if she had gotten her tits done, but she would simply laugh and claim that southern diets were better than any plastic surgeon.

On the counter of her vanity mirror, she saw a note from her husband:

Great job last night! I think we really stand a good chance of winning this thing. I’m so proud to have you in my corner. I love you. –A

Alex was a master at words. He knew exactly what to say and when to say it. It was one of the things that made her fall in love with him back in college. Alex and Vivian had known each other since high school through their parents who were also politicians. Though they never said it, Vivian always knew that ending up with Alex was a part of the “plan.” She had been bred and raised to either become a politician or marry one. There was a time she thought to rebel against her parents, but that plan soon fell to the wayside. She had been caught making out with a young black boy whose mother was their cleaning woman. Her parents were not racist, but they did feel strongly about what kind of image she would be putting out there if she dated someone black or any other ethnicity. Many of their neighbors would have never let their sons date someone who would feel OK dating outside of her race.

Over time, she stopped talking to him and obeyed her parent’s wishes. Only good fellow WASP (White Anglo-Saxon Protestant) boys for her. She had all, but given up trying to find one that she liked until she fell in love with Alex. They had attended a party at his fraternity which is where he swept her off her feet and started her on the path that she was currently on. She never regretted her decision to marry Alex, but she did feel like there was more to her life than just being a housewife. When she spoke to her friends about this, they all laughed at her and said that maybe she should have a quickie affair with one of the hired help. Vivian felt like she was pretty bold, but not enough to have an affair. It was her motto that if anyone would be caught doing something wrong, it would be her.

She sighed to herself. Every morning she would have those thoughts about how she came to this point in her life and every morning she reasoned out that this was the best life she could possibly have.

  Why ruin that?

Vivian took a quick shower before throwing on a cute sundress and heading downstairs. She had two boys who she affectionately nicknamed the “Tweedles.” The boys, Christopher and Jack, were nearly inseparable. Whenever she had doubts about her life, she always looked at her sons and could not even fathom not having them in her life. Charlotte, her nanny, was busy putting pancakes on their plates when she saw Vivian.

“Hola, Senora,” said Charlotte with a huge smile. Vivian smiled back. She had no idea what she would do without her. Like her mother, Vivian wasn’t used to taking care of her own children. Sure, she could play with them and comfort them when they got hurt, but day-to-day maintenance was all up to Charlotte.

“Hello, Charlotte,” she said. “I see they beat me to the table again.” Charlotte giggled.

“They are growing boys, Senora,” she said. “They need to eat and keep up their strength.” Charlotte was quite young, only in her early 20’s, but she spoke as if she were 35 like Vivian.

“That is true,” she said. “Is there any coffee?” Without skipping a beat, Charlotte pulled out a cup of coffee and set it on the counter. Vivian laughed.

“Why do I even bother asking anymore?” she asked. Charlotte shrugged.

“I know you too well, Senora,” she said. Charlotte slid two pancakes on her plate and passed over the syrup. Vivian, who had previously only eaten a few finger foods the previous night, dug right into her pancakes. The boys and Charlotte laughed at how ferociously their mother ate her pancakes. Vivian blushed.

“I’m sorry,” she said. “I’m just so hungry. They never feed us at those things!” Charlotte began to wipe down the counter.

“You should let me pack you something before you go,” she said. “Then you

  won’t be hungry.” Vivian sighed.

“I wish,” she said. “Senor Alex and his campaign manager aren’t big fans of having a meal before events. We may “get food on our clothes” or

“something in between our teeth.” I can’t lie…with so many cameras shoved into my face, I am always afraid have something between my teeth.” Charlotte snickered.

“I could pack you toothpicks,” she said. “Oh! And a portable toothbrush!” They all laughed again. This was exa
ctly how Vivian imagined her morning would go: with laughter and poking fun at the circus which was Alex’s campaign.

“Senora,” said Charlotte. “I want to thank you again for letting my brother come here to work for you. My family appreciates it greatly, especially him.” Vivian smiled.

“You don’t have to thank me, dear,” she said. “With all you do around here, how could I not help you out? You are like family to us and that means your brother is too.” Charlotte smiled. They did not want to speak about it in front of the kids, but Vivian and Charlotte knew why it truly meant the world to her family. Charlotte’s older brother, Javier, was an ex-con.

At first, Vivian was quick to say no, but Charlotte pleaded and explained that Javier was not a bad person. A month after his 18th birthday, Javier was at a party that was raided by police and he was found with a relatively large quantity of drugs. According to him, he had no idea the drugs were in his bag, but who would believe him? The drugs were in his personal backpack. Javier didn’t have a leg to stand on, and so he pleaded guilty so that he would only have to be in jail for a few years. Two months ago, he was released from prison, but of course no one wanted to hire an ex-con especially one that was accused of selling drugs.

Vivian still wasn’t convinced into hiring him until Charlotte explained that Javier was no criminal and that he was a good man who just needed a chance to prove himself. She wasn’t sure why, but something about how Charlotte fought for her brother made her open up to the idea more. She spoke to Alex that night and convinced him to let Charlotte’s brother work as a maintenance/gardener for them. Naturally, she omitted any details about his past and instead explained that Javier was in between jobs and just needed a little assistance from them. Alex didn’t mind. As long as his pay did not come from his campaign, nothing would really bother him.

There was a knock at the door and Charlotte went wide eyed. “Dios mio!” she cried. “We need to get going!” The boys grabbed their bags and gave their mother a hug and kiss before heading to the front door.

“I’ll be back as soon as I can, Senora,” she said. Charlotte opened the door to reveal a tall fresh faced Hispanic man in her way. “I knew it was you, Javi.”

Vivian stood up from her seat and walked towards the hallway. Charlotte gestured for Javier to enter the home. His eyes immediately darted around as he took in the space. Vivian felt her heart jump a bit as soon as she saw Javier. She was not sure what to expect, but she definitely did not foresee him looking so attractive. His shirt was hugged his muscles very nicely and his dark hair was tied into a small pony tail. It was Javier’s eyes that really caught her attention though. His eyes were a beautiful shade of brown that looked a lot like coffee mixed in with a little cream.

“Senora, this is my brother Javier,” she said. “Javier, this is Senora Armstrong. Don’t forget to thank her!” Javier rolled his eyes as Charlotte ushered the boys out of the door. When they were left alone, they stood in silence. Vivian was still studying his body, but she was also a bit intimidated. Alex was muscular, but not like Javier. Her mind began to wander and question if his physique was due to his time in prison.

Javier stood looking awkward before he finally spoke up. “Hello?” he asked. “Are you ok?” Vivian shook her head to knock herself back into reality. She laughed nervously.

“I’m so sorry,” she said. “My mind was elsewhere.” Javier nodded.

“I guess so,” he said. “It’s your day off from the campaign?” Vivian appreciated him making small talk.

“My day off,” she said. “My husband is still hard at work. November will be here before we know it.” Javier nodded as he continued to look around.

“You have a beautiful home,” he said. “Charlotte said it was, but she thinks my old pick-up truck is beautiful.” Vivian smiled.

“I’m sure it is lovely,” she said. Javier cracked a smirk and Vivian felt herself start to melt. She was convinced that Javier wasn’t born, he was

handcrafted. Vivian took a deep breath and led him into the kitchen.

“My husband left a list of things that could be done,” she said. “They obviously don’t need to be finished before he returns, but if you could chip away at the big things, that would be great.” Vivian took the note Alex left and handed it to Javier. Javier looked it over intensely and nodded.

“No problem,” he said. “Seems simple enough. I left a lot of my tools in the yard since it looks like your yard hasn’t been kept up in a bit.” Vivian blushed.

“Downside to being on the road,” she said. Javier nodded. The awkward silence returned between the two of them. Vivian wasn’t used to being lost for words and yet she kept falling into this pattern of not speaking. Javier, however, saved the day.

“Listen,” he said. “If this is going to be uncomfortable, I don’t have to work here.”

“No!” cried Vivian. She wasn’t sure why she said it so forcefully, but she got her point across. “I mean… you need this job, Javier. And your sister already explained to me that you aren’t a bad person. She’s never given me a reason to doubt her judgement before and I doubt she’d start now.” Javier stared at Vivian and she felt herself getting lost in his beautiful eyes again.

“If you’re sure…” he said. “I promise that you won’t regret this. I really appreciate it.” Vivian blushed and nodded.

“Of course,” she said. “Just do me a favor.” Javier looked at her warily.

  “What’s that?” he asked.

“Rule number one: don’t ever tell my husband about your criminal record. Only I should know,” she said. “And rule number two: I’m quite partial to purple flowers if you could plant me some.” Javier snickered. She loved the way he laughed. His deep voice sounded like velvet and made her heart skip a little.

“You’ve got it,” he said. With that, Javier went to the door and went outside to begin his work. As soon as he closed the door, Vivian felt herself breathe again. Had she been holding her breath this entire time? Vivian felt embarrassed as she went back to her chair and finished her coffee.

  CHAPTER 2

Vivian truly did enjoy her day off. All day, she sent numerous emails and wrote out a few speech ideas for the next gala on Saturday. She actually enjoyed not having to face people right now. She always thought of herself as a closet introvert since she felt herself completely drained after a huge engagement.

As she sent off another email, she looked outside to see Javier steadily

mowing their lawn. Part of her knew it was his job, but she still felt bad that he had to be working in the heat. Vivian smirked as an idea struck her to fix him a glass of sweet tea. Being a Carolina girl, her first lesson was to learn how to make quality sweet tea. Whenever they had parties at their home, her guests would always demand that she make sweet tea for them to enjoy. Alex always commented that he could not have found a better wife to help his campaign. Everything she did was perfect.

Before too long, Vivian made a huge pitcher of sweet tea and fixed a large turkey sandwich for the young gardener. She walked outside of her front door to see Javier bopping his head to the music playing in his earbuds. He was so engrossed in his work that Javier did not even notice the blonde bombshell staring at him.

After a minute, he finally looked up as he tore his earbuds from his ears and turned off the weed whacker. She held up the tray of food and drinks and flashed her patented smile.

“I figured you could use a little lunch,” she said. “You’ve been working hard.” Javier removed the work glasses he was wearing and smiled back.

“Thank you very much,” he said. Vivian poured him a glass of tea and handed it to him. Javier took the glass and promptly took a huge gulp.

“Wow!” he replied. “You sure know how to make tea. Ain’t had tea this good since my boy Mario’s mom used to make it back when we were kids.” Vivian chuckled.

“Well, thank you,” she said. “I do my best.” Javier reached down to grab half a sandwich and began to eat wolfish
ly. Vivian giggled at how hungry he was.

“Hungry?” she asked. Javier smirked, embarrassed.

“We didn’t get too many good meals like this in jail,” he said. “When I got

home, I was so hungry that I nearly cleaned out our kitchen.” Vivian smiled.

“That must have been a sight,” she said. Javier chuckled.

“Charlotte was mad at me for about a month since she is the one who usually buys the food.” Vivian nodded as she poured Javier another big glass of tea. “That’s why I needed to find work. I was eating us out of house and home.”

“Well, you have work now,” she said. “So hopefully Charlotte will cut you some slack.”

“Oh, I doubt it,” he said; flashing her a smile. Vivian found herself entranced by the young man as her van pulled up the driveway with Charlotte. Vivian snapped back to reality as she looked over at her nanny.

“Sorry I’m back so late!” called Charlotte as she began to pull out bags of groceries. “I forgot the list of what we needed and had to remember what to buy all from memory.”
