A Taste of Christmas: Dublin Style Page 11

by V, Krissy

Bree stands up to come over “What is it? Come on tell us.” I open the box and show her a silver bangle with the infinity circle and along the bottom of the left hand side and up to the top of the right hand side it says “Rose Patrick Bree Nollaig”. Then on the top on the left hand side going down to the bottom of the right hand side it saves “Together Forever”, the names are punctuated by a small diamond.

Bree touches it and she starts crying too and then she hugs me. She takes it out of the box and puts it on my wrist, it’s a perfect fit.

We watch the kids open their presents and then Tully says “dinner’s ready.” I look confused until we all go into the dining room and there is a full Christmas dinner on the table. I’m gobsmacked. “Sit down Nolly, you can have the head of the table as it’s your birthday.” I sit down and Tully hands me my birthday hat and everyone else has Christmas hats.

“When did you have time to cook the dinner Tully?” I ask clearly confused.

“Well Bree helped me, she cooked the turkey and brought it over earlier so that I could finish it off, she had the vegetables prepared and I put them on when you were in the bath.”

“I can’t believe that you would all do this for me. Thank you so much.” We eat the dinner and relax for the rest of the afternoon. It really has been an amazing day.

We clear the dishes and put them in the dishwasher then we sit in the lounge with our French Vanilla coffee’s. It turns out that Bree, Rory, Tyler and Elena are staying the night so everyone has had a few drinks and lots of fun.

As we are relaxing I hear voices outside, that’s strange it’s usually quiet around here. Next the front doorbell rings “I’ll get it” Tully says. I look at Bree but she won’t look at me.

I hear Tully talking and quite a few different voices, I go to stand up but Bree holds out her hand “just sit back down and relax Nolly.” The door to the living room opens and in walks Stevie, Karen, Josh, Becky, Paddy and Layla. I can’t believe it. I stand up and walk over to hug them all.

“I can’t believe you are here, why?”

“We’ve come to celebrate your birthday Nollaig.” Karen says.

I look behind her and see their musical instruments and look confused. Steve says “we’re going to have a jamming session and I might even teach you some keyboard skills if you’re lucky.” He says laughing.

I turn to Tully and smile and I walk over to him and hug him and whisper into his ear. “I love you so much, thank you for making this the most perfect day.”

We spend the rest of the evening jamming, singing, laughing and then me and Bree disappear to the kitchen to get some cold meats and sandwiches ready for everyone. “You’ve got a really good guy there Nolly, take care of him.”

“I know and I’m so lucky I fell over that day in front of him.” I laugh.

Tyler and Elena eat some sandwiches and then they go to bed, we turn the music down a little bit but we still sing and laugh.

It gets to nearly midnight on Christmas day and Tully brings in some champagne, I really don’t know where he had everything but he keeps coming out with things. He gives everyone a glass and then he holds his up in the air and we all do the same.

“I’d like to propose a toast to the most special girl in the world. Nolly, I love you and you have changed my look on life in the last couple of weeks. Thank you for allowing me to try to change your view of Christmas. The best present I got this Christmas was you falling at my feet.” He laughs and we all say “Nolly.”

After we have all had a sip I hold my glass in the air and say “I’d like to do a toast too. Tully, thank you for making me see that Christmas is all about the memories you make yourself. It’s not about missing Mam and Dad at this time of year, it’s about celebrating the life we had with them. I am so grateful for everything you have done but also for your friends who I can call my friends, and Bree and Rory thank you for helping get all of this together.”

I toast “To Christmas Dublin Style.”

  Epilogue!

  Tully

Christmas day was amazing, Nolly had lots of surprises all day and she was emotionally drained by the end of it. I think I did what I could to make her birthday and Christmas special and I know she really appreciated it.

On Stephens’s day, after we had cleaned up and had breakfast ready for all the bodies that littered the house, we went to my parent’s for dinner. It was a really fun day and everyone loved Nolly. She is naturally funny and caring and my Mam loved her.

We stayed at Mam and Dad’s in my old bedroom and Nolly laughed at all the posters that I still have on my walls. I know I won’t live that one down for a while.

Today is New Years Eve and I am doing a gig tonight at Whelan’s and then we are having a party in my house afterwards. Me and Nolly are going away then to Galway for a week so that we can get to know each other properly. Everything has moved really fast and we want to spend some time learning everything there is about each other.

We decided to pack all the decorations up and get them ready to put them away as we won’t be coming back until after 6th January. We have fun putting them away, pulling each decoration off the tree and talking about when she made it, why she made it and then she wraps them in tissue and puts them away gently.

I was very lucky the day she fell into my life and in the words of the famous Michael Bublé:

  I might have to wait

  I'll never give up

  I guess it's half timing

  And the other half's luck

  Wherever you are

  Whenever it's right

  You'll come out of nowhere

  And into my life

And I know that we can be so amazing

And baby your love is gonna change me

And now I can see every possibility

And somehow I know that it'll all turn out

And you'll make me work so we can work to work it out

And promise you kid I'll give so much more than I get

I just haven't met you yet

They say all's fair in love and war

But I won't need to fight it

  We'll get right

  And we'll be united
