Sweet Dreams, Not! Page 3

by Skye Lotus

The sword came down with a SLAM! as she hit it.

  Star heard a piercing shriek.

  Chapter 9

She saw Jazz beginning to move again, along with the others. But this time, the wave had dissolved.

Jazz had just screamed about falling to the ground out of mid-air.

“We did it!” Jazz cried, leaping in the air.

But Star’s focus was on someone else. Jamie was standing up shakily, seemingly confused.

“Where am I?” Jamie asked, rubbing his forehead.

“What do you mean?” Star asked, walking over.

“Oh no! Where’s Chris? Has he got the others?” Jamie seemed to be seriously worried, looking this way and that, searching for an unknown object, trapdoor, or… whatever.

Star felt a stab of pity for Jamie. What could have happened to make Jamie like what he was before? Could Jamie have been under an…

  Enchantment?

Star looked over at the others. They were still celebrating, not knowing of Jamie’s peculiar state.

“Jamie. Please, what happened?” Star asked softly, sitting down.

Jamie sat down beside her. He was exhausted from something that was unknown to him.

“Flynn, Red and Alex are under Chris’s spell. Flynn was first to venture into Chris’s trap. Red followed to save him, but he, too, never came back. The same happened to Alex, and then me. Chris is… dangerous beyond words. Only the five can stop him.” Jamie closed his eyes, as if experiencing the memories and trying to wash away the pain.

“I’m Midnight, and I’m one of the ones you speak of. I’m on a mission to destroy Chris, and prevent the universe from falling into his clutches.” Star explained.

“You might want to reconsider that.” Jamie mumbled uneasily, swaying slightly.

“Why?” Star was confused on why she’d want to let the world fall under evil.

  “Because he’s your brother.”

  Chapter 10

Star woke to hearing the morning bell.

Another day; but one with a little less evil lurking around the corner. But three more lemmings awaited her, watching her every move and breath. Life would never again be as she’d known it.

Even with a good night’s sleep, Star felt heavy and dreary. Maybe after a little sunshine and school motivation, she’d feel better.

At lunch break, Star left her troupe and went to find Jamie. There was so much more information she needed.

But she couldn’t escape the fact that Chris was her brother, and she’d have to tell her friends sooner or later.

Finally, she found Jamie sitting inside at the library, which was surprisingly deserted, apart from the two of them. Usually, kids would be scouring the bookshelves for spell books and study books.

As Star approached Jamie, he looked up from his book and yelped with shock.

“You! Stay away! You were supposed to be an illusion! A...” Jamie began.

“Dream-Catcher Midnight, at your service. I’d be honoured, if I were you.” Star cut in casually.

Jamie seemed to relax a bit after she started reassuring him that she meant no harm.

“You said something last night that startled me.” Star continued on, after Jamie had finally believed her.

“Yes, Chris is your evil twin, and no, I do not want anything to do with it.” Jamie replied sharply, shooting Star a warning look.

“You were only square one on this mission, Jamie. We have no idea what Red, Flynn and Alex are like, or what their special powers are. You don’t have a choice, Jamie.” Star responded.

Jamie gave Star a determined look. She returned the stare with an equally powerful glare. It did the trick. Jamie slumped down, defeated.

“Good. I’ll give you a day to relax, Jamie. Then it’s down to business.” Star started walking away, only to have Jamie call after her.

“When do you think Chris will find out?” Jamie asked, with a worried tone in his voice.

“Probably...” Star glanced down at her watch. It read 12:00, the time her powers were strongest.

  “Now.”
