“Yeah?” his voice was husky with emotion. She smiled and shrugged.
“Yeah, why not?”
“Are you serious?” he asked, taking a step closer to her as she closed the space between them at the same time, then rested her hand on his hard, warm chest.
“I don’t think there’s anything in this world better than spending the rest of my life as your wife,” she told him, speaking from her heart. Her heart skipped a beat as she took in the stunned look on his face.
“I love you. I love you so damn much, baby,” he leaned in and kissed her. It was a sweet kiss and she held on to his face, unable to stop smiling. “I’m taking you to Vegas. We are doing this right now,” he told her and she grinned up at him.
“Okay.” She placed the clear case in his hand and moved to grab the bouquet.
His surprise made her heart flip. His laughter filled the room as she rolled out her luggage case, warming her heart.
“I’m ready when you are,” she told him and he nodded.
“Let’s go, woman, time’s wasting,” he growled against her lips. She couldn’t have been happier.
Epilogue
She’d been wrong.
The day she accepted his marriage proposal, she thought would be the happiest she could ever be. They both had a permanent smile on their faces during their road trip to Vegas, which was only interrupted to stop for gas and food as well as a couple of unplanned stops because they couldn’t seem to keep their hands off of one another. They felt like teenagers again.
He took her breath away, surprising her with a honeymoon suite at the Bellagio. Fixing her make-up in the fancy bathroom, she heard a phone call that steadied every nerve inside of her. It was his voice asking her son for her hand and promising to take care of her. She knew even with the pain she felt so many years ago when he’d walked away, this was the way it was supposed to be.
Scott had been right.
There was no way either of them could regret the past. They created the life that was meant to be, and found one another again when the time was right. Life was funny that way. What brought them back together was weird but sweet all the same.
His daughter. Her son.
Ten hours after she’d said yes, she walked toward him in a cream, tea-length dress. He stood at the altar in a dove grey suit with a white tie-less dress shirt. An Elvis look-a-like stood in front of them. She’d never been happier. Only in her dreams had she imagined that moment and it had finally come true.
Sure, their marriage wouldn’t always be a walk in the park.
His ex, and even hers sometimes, would stir the pot. Thankfully, their kids were happy for them and understood the love they shared, rekindled after so many years.
Ten years later, she sat on his lap, watching their grandkids run through the sprinklers. His hands were laced with hers. Laughter and giggles filled her ears under the warm sunshine. They had so much love around them she knew there was no way life could get any better than this.
