“What are you looking at?” Aron said to her.

  “The sky,” Maya said simply

He understood her fascination at their surroundings. None of them had ever seen a sky. When they had emerged from the ship, it had truly felt like a rebirth. The strange Alien beings, the large one’s called the Ruthenian’s, had settled themselves on another continent of the planet, leaving a handful of them, led by Tark’An behind to help what was left of humanity with shelter construction and other technological assistance like translation rings, which they used to communicate with each other. Aron didn’t trust them, couldn’t trust them, but for now they appeared to be leaving the humans be. There was still talk of taking the ship off this world to find one completely uninhabited but Captain Boyett had believed that it was too dangerous and that they would be safe here, at least for now. Aron liked Boyett, trusted her. They had lost their Captain, had suffered in different ways but had embraced the newly found colonists and seemed to be integrating well together. So for now, they waited, taking stock, just living in an actual real place, with real air.

“There you are,” came a voice from behind them.

Aron turned to see Dr Chase Meridian coming up the hill. She was holding a selection of wild flowers of various colours tied together. Aron had met her soon after the ship had landed. She had been a second mother to Carrie it seemed, she’d been devastated by her loss. Boyett had introduced the pair after learning how close Carrie had gotten to both Maya and Aron and had tasked her as a liaison between the two groups. Aron found her to be quite intense but friendly enough. She approached the pair, taking a moment to step up the tree, she knelt by the trunk, and gently placed her flowers next to it, saying something under her breath that Aron couldn’t hear. She then made her way over to the pair, taking a seat next to Maya.

“Well little one, how are you doing today?” she said.

Aron could see her eyes welting up. She didn’t seem to be taking the loss of her friends well.

“I’m good Chase,” Maya said glancing up at her.

“That’s great, and you Aron? How are they holding up?”

“To each their own strengths, but we’re here, we’re alive, thanks to you,” he said.

  Chase, smiled.

“It had nothing to do with me, I can assure you,” she said looking back at the tree.

“You miss your friends,” Maya said softly placing her hand on Chase’s

  “I do Maya,” Chase replied

There was a moment’s silence as Maya smiled up at her, the trio gazed out at the sea ahead. Aron noted how blue the water was, he’d seen old data files on it but never imagined it could be like this.

“She’s not gone you know,” Maya suddenly said breaking the silence. She turned her head up to the sky once more. Aron glanced at her.

“She’s up there, somewhere,” she continued.

Chase followed her gaze up to the sky.

  “You think so?” Chase said

  “I know so,” Maya replied.
