  “And in your case, since no one could possibly regard me as an excellent match...?” She waited breathlessly.

  “In my case, it was because I couldn’t live without you! Because you were, possibly, even more necessary than breathing! Oh, amada,” his voice meltingly soft, “when a man and a woman meet and fall in love, as we did—though without admitting it one to the other!—there is only one thing to be done, and that is to put each other out of their agony by getting married, And you and I will be married at the very earliest moment that I can arrange it. I will not run the risk of having you run away from me again!”

  She nestled her head into his shoulder.

  “I could never, never run away from you now!”

  “Do not worry,” said Carlos, in his old, autocratic voice. “You will not be allowed to!”
