Die By Night Page 36

by Kaitlynn Aisling

After that experience, I think I understand my own characters so much better now. I can admit I’ve put my heroes and heroines through some awful agony; I guess it’s only right that I should experience a portion myself.

I don’t know how many more months it’ll take to finish Die by Night. I don’t know if I’ll change my mind and decide it requires a sequel (Live by Day, anyone?). However, I can say this with certainty, things do get better. People do recover. We do move on. We’re like Seren in that way: resilient.

As always, thank you for reading,

P.S. As you can see, after writing my letter, I accepted that Die By Night does need a sequel. I apologize for the way it ended. As a reader, I hate cliffhangers just as much as the next person! But for the first time (in my admittedly short writing career), I felt it necessary. Please forgive me for leaving you hanging, and I promise that this ending serves a greater purpose in Natalie and Gavin’s story.

Loved Die by Night? The story will continue in Live by Day:

Natalie Donetsk shivers in the cold, dank air of her cell. She can’t remember the last time she’s seen or felt the sun’s warmth. It seems as if that life is eons past.

“They’re going to make you forget me,” she whispers.

“I could never forget you. They doona have that power,” Gavin replies.

He doesn’t whisper, too strong to break . . . yet. She leans closer to the bars that separate them, even as the cold metal ignites shivers.

“I think they can,” she sobs.

Truthfully, she knows they can. The facility feels wrong, smells wrong. They are accomplishing unnatural things here, and though she’s not sure how, she worries that the day will come when she looks into those beloved amber eyes and there’s no love or recognition of who she is to him shining back.

“Natalie! Doona give them the satisfaction o’ your fear.”

She starts to cry in earnest. He’s so resolute, but the fall will break them both.

He’s growling now, frustrated. One hand slams against the bars, and she cries even harder. She should be strong, but she just doesn’t see the point anymore. Liam is gone and hopefully safe from these monsters, but she misses his presence just the same.

Babies grow quickly. How many milestones will she miss while imprisoned here? And what will she do if she loves a man who is more monster than man? How far will they tear Gavin down? Is it possible they could take his wolf? Could he survive that? Or worse, could they take the man in him? Could she survive that?

Curses stream steadily through his lips as he reaches through the bars and grabs her shoulders. He squeezes them and rubs his thumbs in soothing circles against her skin.

“Mate, I will never forget you or who you are tae me. I love you, and I always will. Nothing and no one can ever take that away.”

She nods as if agreeing. But she knows what he refuses to accept. She knows he’s lying. She knows it’s ending, and that knowledge is threatening to break her heart and strip her will.

  It’s all over.

Live by Day is a work in progress; but until then, read Kaitlynn Aisling’s other novels!

And now a sneak peek from the next installment in the Seren series:

  Daring

Diablo is a mercenary, undeserving of love, but the memory of the girl he left in his home country still haunts him. He has struggled to stay away from Lena in an effort to protect her, but when the Allegiants discover evidence of the Chimera’s influence in Spain, he knows he must return.

Lena Vilaró is not the same niña that followed Diablo around like a lost puppy, full of innocent love and idolization. She’s older now, wiser, and no longer needs a man who will only leave. At least, that’s what she’s been telling herself since he disappeared; but now that Diablo is back home, the old feelings well up once again.

When Diablo sees his Solana for the first time in six years, will he be able to keep his distance? Or will the heat of passion be too much to ignore, igniting a blaze that he has no hope of ever containing?

Lena will learn—it’s dangerous to dare the devil.

Prepare to know the truth behind the dark gaze of Diablo. Prepare to understand what true passion is.

  Prepare for:

  Daring

The devil’s spawn, an abomination, an abnormality—that is what I am. They shouted the words at me long before I understood what they meant. I never met my father. He left once my mother became pregnant. Being the good Catholic girl that she was, Ana Maria never considered abortion. She may have sinned against the church, but she would not compound upon that sin. She was too smart for that, but that was before the nightmares took over and began to erode her very sanity.

At first, she reasoned them away, believing her fear of raising a child alone was manifesting itself in her subconscious. However, things only worsened. Animals began to appear on her doorstep. Screaming birds kept her awake at night, and hissing snakes invaded her house to rouse her from what little sleep she stole in the mornings. When she went to Padre Delgado for guidance, he wouldn’t go near her, claiming that the devil had left his mark upon her body. Eventually, her sanity wore to a frazzled thread.

Ana Maria was able to convince herself to destroy the curse inside of her. She locked herself in the bathroom and tried to cut the growing evil from her womb. They found her in a pool of blood surrounded by snakes, crows, and howling wild dogs.

I was born four hours later. My mother refused to see me, fleeing the following day; never to be seen again.

The nurses feared me because of my dark, glowing eyes. They screamed that I was without a soul, that my eyes were void of the very light of life.

They named me Diablo. They named me Devil.
